Top 10 Android app updates: Bump, GTasks, AppAware

Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most upgraded apps for the week. I’ve found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to look at what people are actually updating, and not focus on which apps have the most installs.

To find the most updated apps, I turn to AppAware. It’s a great tool that shows me which apps have active support from their developers and sometimes reminds me of an old app that I might have removed long ago. Make sure to install it so your activity can help determine our weekly top 10 list.

This week I’m going to do things a little different. I normally filter out apps that have over 10 million installs, but I’m going to make an exception for popular apps that had significant updates. I hope you enjoy this weekly feature and discover some apps that you might find useful.

AppAware – Version 3.1.3

What’s new in this version:

  • Great new Discover screen customized for you – with Top Apps, Top Games and news from Android And Me.
  • Feeds (Worldwide, Around Me and From Friends) are now listed in the Browse section.

Speaking of AppAware, these guys just released an update that includes a new home screen. Users can now easily browse the top apps and games of the day, featured apps, and news from Android and Me. If you love discovering new apps, then AppAware is a must download.

Songifty – Version 1.0.3

What’s new in this version:

  • Fixed bug which sometimes led to a force-close when returning to the app after a while.
  • Fixed bug which sometimes led to crash when accessing the Song Store page, and occasionally at other times.
  • Greatly reduced cache usage
  • No longer request following permissions: FINE (GPS) LOCATION, READ SENSITIVE LOG DATA
  • Critical bug fix to make app more stable

Songifty is a new app that turns speech into music automatically. It has been available on iOS for awhile and already racked up 9 million downloads, but this is the first time it’s available on Android. If you want to see what this app can do, then check out the AutoTune the News series on YouTube.

KakaoStory – Version 0.9.1

What’s new in this version:

  • Supports English
  • ‘Recent Notifications’ are shown separately
  • Font size setting available
  • Recently added friends are shown separately
  • Landscape mode disabled due to bugs discovered on certain devices
  • Fixed an error that caused the app to terminate when entering detailed view of a story
  • Fixed an error that caused texts to shake in ‘Feeds’ tab
  • Other minor bugs fixed

KakaoStory appears to be the Korean version of Instagram. It has some unique features like the ability to express your emotions on friends’ stories using 5 different emotions available. A recent updated added support for English, so give it a look if you love social picture apps.

ShoeBox – Version 2.0.4

What’s new in this version:

  • Fix issues with Facebook login
  • Improve stability
  • Addresses display bug on HTC One
  • Ensures photos are saved to your phone’s Gallery (ShoeBox album)

ShoeBox is another app new to Android that claims to be the “fastest way to scan your old paper photos and share them with family and friends.” It uses your camera to scan in photos and has special edge detection and perspective correction features to make sure your pics turn out ok. The app is backed by, so all your photos are backed up to the cloud. The latest update fixed a number of bugs including Facebook login and support for the HTC One.

ES File Explorer

What’s new in this version:

  • Support Google Drive
  • Shortcuts,encoding for FTP Server…
  • Use https for

Yesterday we praised Solid Explorer as being one of the nicest looking file managers, but ES File Explorer easily has more features. This week they added support for Google Drive, which joins a long list of other cloud storage services they  already support. The app has over 30 million downloads and still maintains an average review of 4.7.

Maxthon Web Browser – Version 2.6.5

What’s new in this version:

  • [New Features]

There is a long list of alternative web browsers, and Maxthon is one of the better reviewed ones with an average score of 4.7. The PC version has already gained 550 million downloads, but the newer Android version is still pretty new and just passed 1 million installs. I can’t find any unique stand-out features not offered on other browsers, but some of you may still enjoy the overall look and feel of Maxthon.

Bump – Version 3.3.0

What’s new in this version:

  • Now bump photos from your phone to your computer!
  • Save them to your hard drive or get a short link to share wherever you want.

Bump is an app that allows you to share content between two phones by physically bumping them together. This week the dev team added a new feature that allows users to share photos to a PC by bumping their phone to their keyboard space bar. I know a lot of our readers enjoy Bump so I wanted to share this interesting update, but I haven’t ever found a real need to use the app.

Google Shopper – Version 2.4

What’s new in this version:

  • Search history and search suggestions for faster searching as you shop
  • Weekly sales at featured local stores
  • A new homepage with popular products and offers

Google Shopper helps you find information on millions of products. This week Google updated the app with a new homepage that shows popular products and offers. I have used the app on and off, but I think I still prefer ShopSavvy.

GTasks: To Do List – Version 1.0.1

What’s new in this version:

  • New Android 4.0 UI.
  • Select google account on title bar.
  • Batch set due date& move to other list & indent & delete etc.
  • Improve drag&drop sort
  • Search
  • Bugs fix

Google still doesn’t have a native app for their tasks service, but GTasks is about as close as you can get. A recent updated added a new Android 4.0 theme, improved drag and drop sort, and fixed a few bugs. If you are looking for a simple to-dos manager that mimics the Ice Cream Sandwich Holo theme and syncs with Google Tasks, this might be your app.

Zillow Real Estate & Rentals – Version varies with device

What’s new in this version:

  • Get mortgage calculators, real-time mortgage rates & personalized loan quotes
  • Draw your own search area. Narrow your search region by drawing a boundary around specific streets & save those custom-drawn searches
  • Map & sort your favorites list
  • Map your notifications on both Android phones & tablets
  • Select & compare favorites on Android tablets
  • View complete price & tax history on home detail pages
  • Bug fixes to filters

Next time you think about moving, make sure you give Zillow Real Estate a try. It offers one of the best experiences I have tried for searching homes and apartments, and the app is constantly updated with new enhancements. The latest version includes a mortgage calculator, the ability to draw a search area on a map, and the ability to setup notifications for properties you are watching.

I have extensively used bump and I really like it. I think it is a better alternative to all the S-Beam and NFC features. Kakaostory is something that I will try this week (although the name is somehow hilarious)!

  • fletchtb

GTasks is a classic Android app. An oldie AND a goodie!

  • JoJo

    Tasks+ is worthy too.

Silly that Google doesn’t have a native tasks app.

I really liked GTasks. I want to buy a Premium version.
I don’t know but I tried hundreds of to-do applications, such as Any.Do, Shuffle, and at the end I stopped with GTasks. Really cool, easy to use and very useful application. Recommend to everyone.
