Sonic the Hedgehog has become one of the world’s best-known video game characters, with his series having sold more than 80 million copies. Gamers have normally enjoyed new releases of the series on home game consoles, but Sega is now releasing the latest Sonic 4 Episode II on mobile platforms at the same time. Read on as we celebrate the latest release and give away an ASUS Transformer Prime.

The Game

The Sonic 4 saga continues with Sonic’s beloved side kick, Miles “Tails” Power. Players can now experience the Sonic 4 saga as never before with the addition of a brand new engine; bringing you gameplay with updated physics and HD graphics.

“Sonic 4 Episode II is very special because we’ve integrated community feedback into the game.” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “We have some of the most loyal and dedicated fans and I hope they enjoy this next chapter in the Sonic 4 saga.”

For the first time Android gamers can enjoy an experience that is nearly identical to the PS3 and Xbox versions, and it comes at half the price. Players with Tegra 3 devices like the HTC One X or ASUS Transformer Prime will enjoy higher quality textures, better lighting and glow effects, and objects on screen that are absent from other mobile versions.

Episode 2 also features a collaborative multiplayer mode where players can team up with a friend via Bluetooth and take control of Sonic and Tails as they battle against Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic.

We just installed the game on our devices, so look for our full review in the coming weeks.

Release dates:

  • May 15: PS3, Playstation Network, PC digital download via Steam
  • May 16: TegraZone, Xbox Live Arcade
  • May 17: iTunes App Store
  • June: Google Play Store (non-Tegra devices)
  • July: Xbox Live on Windows Phone

  • PS3 and Steam: $14.99
  • Android, iOS: $6.99
  • Xbox Live Arcade: 1200 points

Episode Metal bonus pack:

Players who have Episodes I and II installed on the same device will gain access to a new bonus pack called “Episode Metal.” This unlockable story will feature a playable Metal Sonic, four exclusive levels, and allow players to discover the rebirth of Metal Sonic and learn more about how he survived the events at the end of Sonic CD. If you missed the first episode, grab it from the link below.

Benefits of Tegra 3

Tegra 3 offers gamers the most technically advanced mobile version.

  • The Tegra 3 version of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II is the most technically advanced mobile version of the game, a near mirror-image of the full-blown PS3 and Xbox versions of the game.
  • In fact, by enjoying a game with a gamepad (either with wired or Bluetooth controllers) and outputting the device to an television via HDMI, it’s the CLOSEST to the actual console experience you’ll get on a mobile device…. All with fast frame rates.
  • Sonic on Tegra 3 has dramatically higher quality textures, better lighting and glow effects, and objects on screen that are absent from other mobile versions.

Non-Tegra vs Tegra 3 version of Sonic 4.

My first memory of playing the Sega Genesis was playing Sonic. Use to hang out a friends house playing it and get yelled out for not going outside!

    • ashleybueno

I remember playing the first sonic the hedgehog game on my Sony game gear and when I’d finally make it to the last stage, my batteries would die and I’d have to start over. Why didn’t they put a save option in the game? I guess we’ll never know. Still, one of my favorite games of all time!

    • sandwich

I didn’t even know it was a Genesis – all I knew was that it was Sonic! ;)

If you can’t tell, I never had a console growing up, but my cousins did (unfortunately they lived in a different country entirely). They introduced me to Sonic, and while I only played it the 2-3 times we were able to visit, I remember those signature loops to this day (20 years later or so). :)

  • G3K

“This app is incompatible with your HTC One S.”

I know, I know, a compatible version comes out in June, I’m just saying. Depressing getting a brand-new phone that won’t run virtually all the great new games out there.

  • pekosROB

    pick me please? :-)

  • Meister_Li

I always envied my friend, who had a Mega Drive, because he could play Sonic the Hedgehog and I couldn’t. As a Nintendo-Fan, I of course never admitted it, but I always wished Sonic would make it’s way to my Super Nintendo some day. I think I was the most impressed by the 3D Bonus stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Those just blew me away and I still remember my friend telling me they where in 3D, which I didn’t even understand at the time.

    Good times. ;)

  • alee

My favorite memory was playing Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis that my younger brother got for Christmas.

  • crunchybutternut

I remember my first time playing Sonic. My Boy Scouts troop was out camping over a long weekend and a friend brought his Sega Genesis along (although it was supposed to a be man vs wild sort of thing) and we, and several others, ended up not sleeping nearly the entire trip, taking turns and watching in amazement.

    …good times.

  • AChackes

I played a lot of Sonic on the Sega Genesis as a kid.
The Sonic & Knuckles game was fun where Sonic’s little buddy Knuckles would follow him around, and you could have your friend control Knuckles seperately from Sonic.

    • AChackes

maybe I am thinking of Tails as that second character you could control seperately…it was a long time ago…

  • 00quantameister

I remember the very first time playing Sonic the Hedgehog. It was on a Genesis at a neighbors house. I just remember how blazing fast the whole game was at the time. It was late summer in 1991 & it was the opening wave of 16-bit consoles. The colors were absolutely amazing for 1991. My favorite memory was taking on Dr. Robotnik in the very first boss level. Evading & attacking with Sonic until you won the level. I was 13 years old. Definitely good times at the opening days of the SNES vs Genesis console wars. I remember them very fondly.

  • Mix

Mine has to be Sonic Spinball on my Game Gear.

The game was so damn hard but so damn fun

  • Bryan Stoner

I always liked collecting those little guys in the sonic garden area. And back then my mom when my mom would be shopping for furniture at Then Allen I would be playing Sonic on their Sega genesis. Aftwerwards I would eat their freshly baked cookies. Fun times XD

  • dylantep

sonic adventure 2: Battle!! spent soooo many hours raising chao! Still the best sonic game ever made, in my opinion.

  • YMS123

I didn’t play Sonic games until recently, Sonic Generations, but this is an excellent way to catch up

  • escalatoraccident

“Were you the only kid on the blog with a Sega Genesis”

Man, I don’t think blogs existed when I was a kid… I started on an NES, but my Genesis was the first system that made me a serious “gamer.” I’d play sonic for hours and I remember trying to get as many rings as possible and then getting hit to see how low I could drop the framerate, ha ha. I guess I had testing in my blood before I even knew it.

Unfortunately, Sega hooked me and then I clung to my Dreamcast just to watch it die while everyone else was getting a Playstation…

  • JDNorthwest

I remember having the one friend in the neighborhood with Sega. The rest of us had our Atari systems then Nintendos. Playing Sonic 2 was both alike and different. The blue blur of happiness.

  • Yonas

First thing that comes to my mind of my earliest gaming history was all Sonic (well a there was a bit of pokemon to be frank),i remember switching on the Genesis early on Saturday mornings without my parents knowing, and playing Sonic & Knuckles 3 till lunch….Knuckles used to get me frustrated with all the trolling he used to do,but still had good times and i still play them on my android phone using Gensoid :)

  • wilu6

I remember when i was smaller i always played as a Sonic! best one

  • Alexander drzfr3shboialex

SONIC is awesome, and my favorite sonic memory is sonic adventure battle 2 for gamecube. It’s awesome i love the chao world :D

  • oxnard montalvo

Best memory? Golden Sonic duh! You could almost tear through an entire level in about 10 seconds. Plus who could forget that rad super sayain golden do?

  • BarefootMike

My closest friends had Sega systems and thus Sonic, but I never really understand the draw of the game.

  • halo0

Sonic on Genesis was the bomb. That and Golden Axe were the two I’d play over and over again even after I had beaten them.

  • ranwanimator

I remember the first time I saw a Sonic game and having come from the world of slow moving Nintendo I was like “HOLY crap that is fast!” It took me forever to get used to playing it because I had to seriously step up my reaction times. Great game though and great memories.

  • niterider804

My favorite goes to Sonic CD on the Sega CD. My brother and I played Sonic CD to death when we were little kids. *sniffle *sniffle…It brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. Honorable mentions goes to:

    - Sonic 3 w/ Sonic & Knuckles (Genesis)
    - Sonic Adventures (Dreamcast)

  • epps720

I remember being jealous of my friends who had Sonic and Sega. I had the Nintendo so would always run over their house to check out the game. I was obsessed with it

  • jonathan3579

My first and favorite memory was playing Sonic 2 with a friend (as Tails, lol) on the Sega Genesis. In fact, that was a game I can still get down on from time to time.

  • Louis A

I remember I went to a family friend house for his son’s birthday (9) and one of the gifts the birthday boy had was the sonic sega. When he unwrapped his gift, he just started crying hysterically and after that, he took the game walk straight in his room, looked the door and his mother said he didn’t come out the until next day around 3pm for food.

  • binarybulge

My favorite Sonic moment actually happened fairly recently. My brother and I were always hardcore Nintendo gamers growing up, so no Sonic. We got together over Thanksgiving a couple years back and tried Sonic (Episode I?) on Xbox Live. It was a pretty humbling experience to say the least. We eventually played through most of the game, after dying countless times and trying our best to hold back the frustration.

  • BikerBob1789

First game I ever played on a “real” console. Played for hours in college.

  • Greegoor

Sonic 1 on the MegaDrive was the first game I ever played. I was very bad at playing it and never got past Labyrinth Zone but I enjoyed it for a longer period of time, then any new triple-A game.

I haven’t tried the new Sonic 2D titles yet, but winning a Tablet would certainly give me a reason to try them.

    Greetings from germany!

  • hopscotchjunkie

The split screen multiplayer on Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive (Genesis for you lot on that side of the water). So many hours wasted. The fun of the springs in the casino levels. That bloody cavern level. The endless arguments caused by spending the special stages jumping directly in front of the other player over and over and over again. The inevitable immediate demands for a rematch. The music. The speed. The sound effects.

It was perfect. Absolute gaming perfection.

(I had the Mega Drive out again for a post-pub session not so long ago, and that multiplayer challenge has definitely stood the test of time).

  • NGagen

I remember never getting to play because my brother was always playing and he was older than me. I do remember doing the code on Sonic 2 (I think) to be Super Sonic… that was cool.

    • hopscotchjunkie

Yes! Entering codes by playing certain sound effects wasn’t it? Tearing through the levels as Super Sonic – classic.

  • nportelli

Playing Sonic 2 with a friend of course. One Tails, one Sonic. And the new spin move rocked!

  • Chamboncito

My favorite memory of Sonic was a neighbor boy and I would ride our bikes to school. I used to get up an hour earlier than I needed to so that I could play Sonic on his Sega while he got ready for school.

  • Nate B.

Sonic was and always will be a classic. Sega Genisus was my life back then. I remember the voice of it when it would come on and Sonic would run across. I became overwhelmed when I realized I could go into Super sonic and fly through everything. It didn’t stop there. When hey added Knuckles, who I thought looked amazing I couldn’t get enough. Jumping up and down on Robot man until his evil machines failed. So much fun. Those were the days.

  • Joel

Yes I had a Sega Genesis!! Favorite Characters – Sonic and Shadow, Favorite Game – Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Sega Dreamcast)
Sonic will always have a special place in my heart :)

  • keenish27

I loved Sonic as a kid. I never owned a Sega, however my Uncle did. I remember one year at Thanksgiving I asked him if I could borrow his Sega just so I could play Sonic 2. That was the best Thanksgiving ever!

  • SGB101

i loved sonic on the Sega Mastersystem, and always thought the original was the best imho.

this game seems a little steep at £4.39, but im soooooo tempted , so so tempted.

  • Alexander drzfr3shboialex

also you guys should give away a tegra 3 One X :)

  • Vance

I had a weird friend growing up who had a sega genesis and I always acted superior because I had a Nintendo. Secretly I envied his access to Sonic and ultimately we spent all our free time playing it at his house instead of my Nintendo. I love this game!

  • winnkid

I was the one kid on the block that didn’t get to play anything Sega. The first time I played anything Sonic was Mario and Sonic at the London games.

  • Thomas Biard

First time playing sonic was on a Sega Genesis that my friend had given us after he got Sega Dreamcast, so Genesis had been out for a while to say the least. We played that thing like crazy! One of the funniest memories was when two friends would come over and one was a much younger brother who was super annoying and would get us in trouble if we didn’t let him play. So in turn, we would give him the controller that wasn’t plugged in and we would play while saying “GOOD JOB ANDREW!” For years he thought he was playing and thought he was awesome at all video games. Now I know that sounds mean, but he was like a younger brother to me and now he’s all grown up so its funny to laugh about.

Between Sonic and Mortal Combat, that was enough to keep the Genesis up and running around our house until 2003 when it finally died.

*pours some out for the Sega*

  • Michael Rogers

    Favorite Sonic memories:

    * Watching Sonic tap his foot impatiently and stare back at me.
    * The music to Green Hill. I’ll still be able to hear it perfectly, in my mind, until my dying day.
    * Plugging a Sonic cartridge into Sonic & Knuckles, into a Game Genie, into a 32X. It was a flimsy and teetering tower of awesome..

    • Thomas Biard

Haaaa Game Genie. It has been too long and I totally forgot about that. Thank you for the amazing memory! “Flimsy and teetering tower” for sure!

  • JerecDrak2

My first experience of console gaming was Sonic 2 on my next door neighbour’s Genesis, who couldn’t fall in love with that game! Whoever played as Tails always got had to save the day while the player using Sonic desperately tried to stay alive. Good times ^.^

  • Escobar

I was too young to play Sonic back then so I don’t have any experience or memory’s about it. BUT I would defenitely want to try it out, it’s looking cool :)

  • BradleyRuiz

I was the only kid that had a Sega Genesis on the block and enjoyed playing Sonic the Hedgehog the most but owned all of the Genesis Sonic’s Games i still have them around :)

Now seeing him come back to android its brings back a lot of memories that i will surely pass to my kid when i win this tablet for him so he can play and love sonic like i do

  • Thracks

My favorite Sonic memory is easily the day I received it and my Sega Genesis for Christmas when I was a kid. Seeing that awesome game come out of the wrapping paper after a Genesis was unbridled joy.

Some people religiously played Mario, some were Metroid fans, and others are Halo people–depending on their age. Me? I grew up playing Sonic 2, and it’s easily one of my top-10 all-time favorite games.

  • Yonas

One other good memory was when me & my little brother first discovered that we could play 2 players using Tails. He was like : i wanna play with you,i’m gonna be the orange cat” ,i shaked my head and ignored him, next thing you know the kid plugged the 2nd controller in and started jumping around,we were the best duo,he helped me defeating the toughest bosses, cuz Tails simply,NEVER dies ! i have to admit playing Diablo 3 together can never be as exciting as those times. Thank you SEGA :D

  • jj14

I still remember waiting for parents to go to sleep so that I could (re)start playing sonic on the Sega mastersystem :D

  • Oskar Wismierski

Always preferred Knuckles.. seemed cooler for some reason ;)

  • fugmulch

Never owned a console to play Sonic on so always had to play at a friends. However, I did own the Sega hand-held with the Sonic cartridge…. That 2″ screen was awesome.

  • SSJGohon

Old school, I remember playing Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles till I had all the chaos emeralds. Those were the days. And thanks to local game shops that do retro (ya its sad, we call em retro) games i was able to get alotta the old games i had. There nutting like playing classics on the system. Sadly thou I dont have an Android device that can play this, it be nice to get one thou :)

  • xbloodworkx

I didnt get much experience with consoles as a kid but whenever I could Sonic was the game I wanted to play!

  • mrkrstphr

My little cousin got a Sega Genesis that came with Sonic the Hedgehog. I remember going over and being blown away by the graphics. It was so cool! I thought this was it; I had arrived at the future. I played that game, and the followups, to death. Now I get to be nostalgic whenever I want by playing this on my phone when it arrives for all devices. Booyah!

  • Fishdinner

I love how you guy have so many awesome contests!

My favorite memory of Sonic was running over to my friend’s house as soon as the sun came up so we could get in as much as possible before his parents kicked us out of the house to go platy outside. :D

  • Crickerman

I don’t know where to begin… I remember playing the first sonic game on the sega genesis (megadrive) when I bugged my father non stop after the sonic tv commercials… After that I got every single sonic game from sonic 2, 3, sonic and knuckles, etc my favorite (and still is) sonic 3 with the sonic and knuckles addon.

I’ve collected the chaos emeralds so many times and beaten dr robotnik (now eggman) time and time again. I’m happy they’ve returned to their roots in this installation of sonic.

  • Zach Stewart

Playing a tournament of Sonic 2 multiplayer mode was amazing. Me and my brothers and some friends coming back day after day to try and edge someone else out by 1 or 2 seconds. I remember getting up early on Saturdays to practice levels and look for shortcuts.

    Man Sonic 2 was awesome.

  • Fubie

I would play at my cousin’s house when I would go there. It was fun to play!

  • j_d_

A friend of mine got a new console (I think a Dreamcast) and showed me Sonic. Great game!! We played for hours :)

  • tahngarth

I was always a SNES kid, and Sonic was the only game that really made me want a Genesis. Instead I’d just go to my friend’s house all the time and play on his big screen (giant mirror FTW!). All that blast processing was awesome!

  • havoc3d

I was so stoked when sonic 2 came out and my dad and I could play together rather than taking turns. It was in a dead heat with Golden Axe, Forgotten Worlds, and Toejam and Earl as far as play time.

  • Zagrash

I was definitely one of the Sega kids, and would gloat that our Mortal Kombat had blood =) but back on topic, I remember spending countless nights sitting in front of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, trying to beat the freaking game. I don’t remember the level, but there were a lot of underwater parts.

Oh, the charge-spins were also a welcome addition.

  • Andrew Ensley

My favorite Sonic memory: Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis. Best. Christmas. Ever.

  • lucasns

My parents used to rent Sonic the Hedgehog for Master System on the weekends. Now, every time I see the blue character, I remember my father arriving with a smile on his face. That game was the reason I would get high grades at school (I could only plat it if I was good at school), so I grew up that way.

    Thanks, dad.

  • William Burnham

My favorite sonic games were the ones where I could play as knuckles!

  • David Keller

My moment was bitter-sweet.. my brother and i had gotten all the way to what we called “Robohedgehog” on Sonic 2. We left to go shopping with our mom and a couple hours later when we got back home we noticed there had been a power outage… the game reset. It sucked. But it also awesome because it meant we got to play all over again!

  • tyrol

My favourite memory was playing it on my old Windows 95 PC off some bootleg CD that my dad had got for me. It was one of the earlier games that I could play, and for days after that I just tried to beat it. Sad to say, I don’t think I ever did.

But I’d welcome being given another chance to try my hand at it. ;)

  • sfrable

My favorite Sonic memory was winning the jackpot on casino night zone.

  • jrh418

I remember the first time I played Sonic. It was on the Genesis when I was just a child… Haha, I opened up Sonic and I fussed because I wanted to play my new game right then and there. There were many battles with my brother over the controller… but Sonic was well worth the fight. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to be the younger child… I could do no wrong :)

  • amgala

I was lucky enough to have Sega and Sonic growing up. I loved playing as Knuckles because he could glide. Sonic is a true classic that is now finding a new life in this era!

  • Vitti

Trying to beat the entire game (Sonic 1) as fast as possible. Then playing co-op with Sonic and Tails (or Knuckles) with friends after school growing up. Great games.

  • Qrkchrm

I remember a (spoiled) friend of mine had a Sega Game Gear, which at around that time was perhaps the epitome of cool. He showed me how he could play Sonic on his handheld. I was so impressed, I didn’t even have a TV at that time. The graphics were so good they made me dizzy. I only played for a few minutes before I was “doing it wrong.”

  • AvatarZ

Coming home from sleep away camp for two days for a wedding and spending (almost) the whole time playing Sonic and Knuckles on my Genesis. My Genesis was then stole the following week when my home was robbed – glad I got the beat the game first.

  • philnolan3d

I have two big memories of Sonic one when my friend got a Genesis later than everyone else and only had the one game that came with it, Sonic. He wanted to play it ALL the time. The other is when Sonic and Knuckles came out. I was working my first real job at a Babbage’s video game store and I was able to borrow the game for a few days.

  • Noven

These contests rock! First memory was playing the very first Sonic game and probably the first time I stayed up past 12. I was Sonic for Halloween that same year. Still have my Genesis and still play all the Sonic games from time to time.

Thanks for these awesome contests! No other site like Android and Me.

  • Osby Bigos78

I was more of a Nintendo kid, but I did have a Sega Genesis and Sonic 2. My favorite memory is playing the Pinball level with my little sister. It was the first game she had ever played.

  • Jmo

The first time I got the Golden Sonic code to work in Sonic 2 for Sega Genesis! Great Time

  • B2L

I grew up playing with my brothers, we used to have so much fun. We used to throw Sonic parties and see who could get the farthest without dying. Recently, I bought a Sega Genesis just for old times sake. I would love to be able to play this on my Galaxy Note.

  • DrewJaeger

I’m old enough that I was an adult when Sonic came out on the Genesis! Didn’t stop me from wasting hours trying to finish it, which I did!

  • boro09

I’ve spent hours and hours playing Sonic when I was a kid. It’s awesome we have it on Android now.

  • Ana Isabel Lima

First time i played Sonic was in a friends Megadrive… the good old times :D

  • mjolnir

The one thing I remember about playing Sonic (long ago) is continuously revving up Sonic to get a burst of super-speed.

  • bigsmoothz88

I first played Sonic on the first color portable gaming system of GameGear! Good times destroying Dr. Roboto.

  • dustryhi

My first memory is play the game at stores since I never had a Genesis.

  • João Pedro Santos

When i met Sonic i did when there was still Sega Saturn… the graphics back then seemed so sweet and nowadays we look back then and think:” How could i enjoy this? It’s only pixels… and more pixels.. ! ” lol

Loved to play it with friends

  • Yonas

and oh ….how could i forget this,THANK YOU Android&ME for opening this contest Worldwide without any restrictions, even though its gonna be tougher, but you’ve listened after all !

  • Ahmad Hasan

I used to play Sonic in the video game store all the time. I always get jealous of all the guys beating me up. May be when I get this transformer, I’ll beat them at something :-D

  • One4Closer

Playing Sonic 2 when Sonic turned into Super Sonic!!! It was epic!

  • alexanderharri3

Sonic the Hedgehog on the SEGA Nomad. Sonic in color when the Game Boy was still in black and white. Instant street cred.

  • LittleGreenDude

My first sonic memory, was playing sonic 2 at my friends house when we had sleepovers. We would always get in trouble for playing too much :)

  • ralphwiggum1

My favorite 2D Sonic game was Sonic 3. It was cool being able to play with a 2nd controller and control Tails and pick Sonic up and fly.

I also enjoyed the first two Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast. At one point, they were my favorite games. And they had catchy songs.

  • Laurentiu V.

I never played Sonic as a kid… Let me have this chance now.

  • Ric1511

My fondest Sonic memories have got to be secretly turning on my big bro’s Sega while he was not in the room (big bro was a stingy jerk when it came to his sega) and gaming away. I had to be quick, for when he’d discover me he would turn it off and yank the controller away. Even though I was way better at it than he was! haha. My favorite was Sonic 2. Gotta love the good ole days…

  • Dan Jones

I was the only kid I knew with a Sega Genesis, and I was so proud of it. Sonic 2 was definitely my favorite Sonic game, but my favorite Sonic memory comes from Sonic 1.

I remember one Sunday morning when I started playing Sonic early in the morning. After a couple of hours, and my parents tell me I need to get ready for church, ’cause we’re leaving soon. I had gotten further in the game than ever before, and I couldn’t just leave it like that. So, I paused it, and turned off the TV.

We were gone for just over three hours, and when I got back, I didn’t even wait to change back into my regular clothes. I just sat back down in front of the TV in my church clothes, turned back on the TV, and continued playing (amazing it didn’t overheat being paused for that long).

I finally beat the game that day. It was the first video game I ever beat, and I was so proud of myself.

  • Ryan McFadden

My favorite Sonic memory was getting game gear for my first communion along with Sonic & Tails… I wish I still had it

  • tnstatc

My favorite Sonic memory was my sons always making me play Tails, because I was so terrible at keeping up with the game when playing as Sonic.

my best sonic memory is a good one. while in college i worked for a game store and before the dreamcast came out we were sent japanese versions so we could demo upcoming games to get reservations on the system. the system we had kicked the bucket one day before the u.s. version was release so my roommate/co-worker and i decided to take the system home and see if we could get it running again. it took some time but we got it going again and the only game we brought with us was the first sonic adventure so we ended up playing it in bits and pieces as we got the system working. once we started playing on a working system we never stopped. one of us would play while the other worked on the translation (japanese game for the japanese system) eventually around 6am after we were up all nite we completed the game. this will always be one of my most fond memories and easily my best (and probably only) sonic story.

  • Rob Banks

my strongest memory of Sonic was:
hearing this awesome chatter in middle school about this game called Sonic the Hedgehog and not having a clue what it was…..i lived on a farm and we had a 21″ black and white television… first game system was an atari in 1995……

  • sbri7

I always loving Sonic more than any other game, cause u always can make more moves with the character, and also for the graphics environment…

  • wildkarrde21

Never had a game gear or sega genesis as a kid (nintendo only household), but I remember being so jealous of the color on the game gear of my best friend.

  • fredpyo

I have always been a die hard nintendo fan… but I remember back when I was a youngster, I sat down with a friend of school to play with this weird console named the Sega Genesis that had 3 buttons on its control, plus the D pad. Once we started playing Sonic I was mesmerized, I just kept remembering all the time I spend playing Super Mario, and how slow it felt compared to this lightning fast Sonic game! Of course, I just tagged along as the invulnerable Tails, but the speed of the game and the variety of levels and the music kept me hooked up to the later levels, where my youngling mind could barely make any sense of the difficulty! It was too much fun!

Of course, I started to pay much more attention to Sega since then :).

  • kinderdm

My favorite memory is playing when I was a kid at the sitters house after school. Those freakin air bubbles and the panic of when the music speeds up.

  • PaulPaulson

I remember playing Sonic on my Genesis for hours. I had an old TV hooked up in my room and thought I was the coolest.

  • Benchmade7

I loved Sonic and still do can’t believe how good it still is on the mobile platforms.

  • tsabeeka

The Sega MasterSystem II was one of the best surprises of my childhood (thank you, mom) and the bundled Sonic game was one of the best experiences (thank you, Sega).
    And… thank you, Asus? :)

  • Jake Gall

Sonic 2 imo was the best, but I do like all sonic side scrollers. Too bad my rezound is incompatible :-(

  • HufflepuffBR

I think the first memory about Sonic was how much all the SuperNES guys make me jealous with Strret Fighter II and F-Zero, and then Sonic came to sweep them hard against the floor… Here in Brazil we played a lot and, even with the high piracy level, Sonic had hit good sales.

But curiously, my best memory about Sonic wasn’t with Sega Genesis, but with his poor edition, the 8bit Sega Master System.

Here in Brazil, Sega Master System had saled well mainly because of TecToy, the Brazilian company that worked with Sega, that had provided so much games, including some adaptations specially for Brazilian Market, including even a OFFICIAL SMS version of Street Fighter II. But, as the time goes, Sega Master System was being pulled aside by the competition: N64, Saturn, etc… But, one day, TecToy had made a version called Master System III Super Compact. Althoguht I had a Sega Genesis (called here as Mega Drive, like in Japan), I bought I. And the game that came with him was Sonic. I bought it with my brother as a Xmas gift for ourselves and gone to (in the time) my Grandparent’s home. And one of the best things with this console was that he had a RF signal generator that don’t demanded any of these pesky box you put behing the TV: instead, he could generate TV signal for channel 3 and 4 VHF, not so strong, but strong enough to need no cables to be connected on TV for playing the games, and Sonic was the one that came with him. We (my brother, I and all our cousins) played Sonic all that holidays, till we got sick of it! :P

PS: Another thing I remember about SMS (not Sonic-related) is that the control are partially interchangeable with Atari 2600 (another popular videogame here in Brazill) and with the MSX computers, although in either case Button 2 didn’t work… Anyway, you could still playing Sonic.

  • fletchtb

I remember seeing for the first time and how fast it played. The speed of Sonic rolling and the loops made Mario Brothers instantly dated. And now all these years later, my 5yo son is playing Sonic on his Android tablet.

Good Luck to everyone in the contest!

  • whazzup969

I remember the first time that i played sonic on the sega genesis. My older brother was in college and his roommate had a sega. It was almost magical to hear that first ‘seegggaaa’ when you fired it up and then to hear the opening sounds of sonic and the incredible speed of playing the green hills zone…that memory will always stick with me. Wanting to be as cool as my older brother and his roommate with their sega genesis…

  • vachea

My greatest memory of playing Sonic was on my Sega Genesis when i was a kid. After playing through my first couple of zones and bosses I was hooked. I have played sonic on basically every gaming device I’ve had since the Sega Genesis all the way to my PS3. I’ve played it on the Game Gear, Dreamcast, Gamecube DS,DS Lite, DSi, 3DS PSP Wii PS2 and PS3 Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1 If i won the Transformer Prime that’d give me another device to play it on :D

  • Candroidian

Admittedly, I’ve always been pretty bad at Sonic games, but I had a blast with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle back in the day! I can’t even begin to recall the countless times I’ve played through the City Escape stage collecting animals to ensure my Chao would best my brother’s.

  • synergeticink

My fav experience with any Sonic game was when Sonic and Knuckles came out. I was like WOW…a new bad guy that looks like Sonic and is super cool. I played that game none stop for days. Now my son is a HUGE sonic fan and he play Sonic Generations with me on my XBOX 360. Its awesome that my son and I can share the same game experiences together. I would love to have a Transformer Prime so I can play the newest game and have it available on the go to play with my son. Good luck everyone! :)

  • bcknapp

The Sega Genesis was my first real console. I got it for Christmas and it came bundled with original Sonic. After playing it I was hooked. I bought Sonic II, III, and Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic Spinball! All great games and really fun to play!

  • bellken

If I win one, my children and I will have some great memories of Sonic the Hedgehog.

  • protozeloz

I didn’t had a Sega console, my friend did. Sonic was he only non Nintendo game Ive always liked to the point i was happy when it was included on the Smash series, sonic was really nice and cool plus the game could keep you entertained for hours. with sonic the gap between victory and defeat was close

  • cshd

The best game was Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 3 on top of it. I still have those cartridges at home. Soundtrack was Bombizzle, you cant go wrong with MJ working on the soundtrack.

  • robwhittaker

Being blown away by the speed, there was nothing else compared to it when it came out.

  • abusedtortoise

As a kid I learned my left from my right thanks to Sonic. One the original Sonic at the start screen press-> up, down, left, right, a, start and you will get to the debug screen to select what level you want or you can become the Golden Sonic etc… I freaking love that game!

  • nalty

Wow, my first memory of sonic was probably watching my dad play the 8-bit version on his old master system when I was four years old. Never really played Sonic myself till I was a bit older and I’ve been a giant fan!

  • OpenIntro

I was actually always a Nintendo kid growing up. But I remember always wanting to go over to my best friend’s house to play on his when the original Sonic came out! The game was epic in its time and I’ve always associated Sega with Sonic ever since.

    Thanks for the contest!

  • geiko

My first memory of Sonic was some time in the 90s. That memorable tone when you collected the ring will never be forgotten. This is pretty cool. Thanks for all the work you do throughout the year AaM.

  • Ahmad Abdel-Aziz

    I was a kid,
    I loved SEGA, a lot!
Sonic, the blue hedgehog, was SEGA mark for me.
    I hated other platforms.
I even played Sonic the hedgehog on arcade :)

  • komeilkarimi

I use to do my homework ‘extra carefully’ and ‘extra hard’ to get a longer break to go to my cousin’s to play on his console.
It was never SEGA! it was SONIC! let’s play SONIC

  • myandroid99

My favorite memory is when I finally unlocked tails and knuckles and shadow for the gameboy game

  • azd.apc

my brothers never let me play cause I was a girl!!! I want mine now to make up for all those tears I shed

  • mojomoney

My friend had a Sega and I just had an Atari :( Maybe a Transformer Prime would fill the void in my soul where a Sega should have been so many years ago.

  • 94wolfpack

I used to be the kid that DIDN’T have a sega. I had a nintendo and I’d always go over to my friends apt to play sega!

Man I miss that lil hedge hog.

  • spintrex

One of the memories I always get when I think of the blue blur is from the first game, Sonic the Hedgehog. During the water levels Sonic is constantly reminded of the impending doom of drowning with a large number countdown to your death. All together that game was great and was one of the best when I was younger.

Hope this new game relives the past!

  • Duncan Mackenzie

I always loved plugging non-Sonic games into the top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge just to see If anything happened.

  • Red_wagon

I was a Nintendo fan boy until the Dreamcast came out. I loved Sonic running through a VGA cable. HD Sonic Adventure was badass.

  • Krynn

I remember wanting a Sega just so I could play Sonic… Spent a lot of time at a friends house because I didn’t have one. ;)

  • helfone

I remember Sonic the Hedgehod the best as it was the first time I played such a fast pased game and I was hooked! Played threw the whole game at a friends house. My favorite part of the gaming was going as fast as I possibly could, for as long as I could! Great fun! Would be awsome to win a prime and give it a go, such good memories! :D

  • uzunoff

SEGA was my entry platform to the video games. Sonic was the iconic game to play.

  • Hardeep Singh

I remember, I didn’t used to have a SEGA Genesis of my own, so I’d go over as often as possible to my cousin’s place. We’d build random forts in his basement and then play video games, usually sonic lol. Good times :)

  • wild

sonic adventure 2: Battle, One of my first games and one of the most beloved.

  • Notdopple

playing sonic on the original Nintendo with my brother

  • Notdopple

playing sonic on the original Nintendo with my brother and sister

  • Rockstar323

Sonic 2 was the first game I had when I got my Game Gear. I played the heck out of it, or at least until the batteries died after 2 hours.

  • bp

My favorite sonic memory would be playing on the Sega Genesis, taking turns with my grandpa.

  • Bondless

The dreamcast was the first system I ever bought with my own money and I got sonic adventure 2 and I played the hell out of it. I still would if my uncle would give me back my damn console

  • skugern

My mother wouldn’t allow us to get a console, so most of my time was spent at friends’ houses playing Sonic for hours on end.

  • DroidPower

also didn’t have a sega but a nintendo. played this at friend’s house. o the memories.

  • Matthew

I only just started playing it! I missed out on sonic in my childhood :( But generally they’re all great memories!

  • ra

i’ve no memories of sonic because never had one, i’ve missed it all, which is a pitty.

  • Snowman81

My favourite memory of Sonic is when my best friend got a Sega Genesis for Christmas and he got Sonic the Hedgehog. The speed that Sonic moved at was just mind blowing. It really made Super Mario Bros. seem dated and well kinda uncool. It was like Mario moved at 10 miles per hour and Sonic moved at 100 miles per hour.

It honestly was one of those moments where it felt like gaming had changed.

  • alexaac14

sonic the hedgeog on sega genesis….playing with a controller that has a down button that does not work…..never got past the stage with springs

  • VS

I loved the music of the Sonic series during the Genesis era, even have a couple clips that I rotate for notifcation phone chimes (Mystic Zone, Casino Night Zone, Aqua Temple, Green Hills, etc). Good stuff!

Gameplay wise, I enjoyed the first Sonic Adventures on the Dreamcast. First 3D world that I thought didnt look like walking blocks and being able to run around the city at Sonic speed was a lot of fun. The Tamagotchi rip off mini pet game didnt go over so well with those Dreamcast memory cards.

Ahhh, Dreamcast, so awesome yet so underrated for it’s time. I blame the Sega Saturn for it’s demise!

  • CamDeezy

I was one of those kids “deprived” of a Sega Genesis and the only opportunities I got to play it were over at friends’ houses and Blockbuster demo TV’s. Android and Me, you have the potential to help make up for my lack of a childhood here! If I win a Transformer Prime, I will play the crap out of Sonic 4 Episode II! That Tegra III processor could make Jessica Parker look amazing… like an amazing thoroughbred horse. But anyhow, back to Sonic – my fondest memories were playing against the evil, floating boss at the end of every episode, saving cute little forest animals, smashing TV shaped boxes for rings and invincible force-fields, and nearly crying when I hit a stack of spikes that flung my precious golden rings everywhere. I loved the game as a kid, but sadly, it just wasn’t meant to be… will you help this poor, unfortunate soul?

Also, I love you, A&M. That is all.

  • Windstep

Ah circles going round and round!!

  • professandobey

Actually, my only memory with Sonic is from playing the Sonic hoverboarding game demo for the Xbox Kinect about a year ago. If the controls were a little more responsive, I would have bought it. Before that, I’ve just never had the right console at the right time to play a Sonic game. I hope to win this contest in order to experience Sonic properly.

I just remembered that my wife has fond memories of playing Sonic Spinball as she was growing up, so I’m sure she’d also be all over Sonic on a TF Prime.

  • Svipur

Ah, those spikes in the Mystical Cave zone. You’re just standing in that hole, catchy music and invisibility flicker and all, and waiting for your inevitable death. Nothing like it.

  • adamblue

My favorite (and somewhat sad) memory is the tension felt when Sonic was about to drown. If I wasn’t able to get him an air-bubble, I’d run to my bed crying. Poor little blue dude.

  • Trinhbo

My favorite Sonic memory was collecting a boatload of rings and then being grazed by an enemy and losing all of them. Okay, that’s more like my least favorite memory.

  • ionious

Sonic takes my gamer side back to my early gamer days. I remember as if it was yesterday my brother had just received a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) with Sonic 2.
Emerald hill zone was my first step into the virtual world and since then I have been a big fan of Sega!

Most of my friends and family members however did not own a Sega console and were too busy playing crash bandicote. But every time they came over and played Sonic they would be at it for hours!
The last Sonic game I played was Sonic CD on my Galaxy S2. Great game.

  • jlnoell

My memory of Sonic was beating out the bosses. Intense and challenging with lots of satisfactions watching blow up.

  • sublimnl

My favorite Sonic memory were those commercials back in the day talking about BLAST PROCESSING! Never did my SNES feel as inferior as it did then. : o

  • nivekkev

I remember being the only one’s (my brother and me) still being stuck on Atari while everybody else on the block had one of the newer systems, Christmas came and we finally got the upgrade and it came with Sonic. I think I became a Sonic expert with in that following week. That was a great Christmas.

  • donger

My favorite Sonic moment was the first time I played a Sonic game on the Game Gear.

  • rthercey

Ahh, Ive never seen 16-Bit gold rings shine so bright! .. God bless Sonic, Knuckles and the whole spiny spinning crew -they helped me waste the better part of my college career – Thankfully I had plenty of years to catch up…I look forward to playing it on Android! Im sure with my decrease in reaction times, it will feel like an entirely different game.

  • dmcintosh

I would have to say best would be Sonic CD. One of hte best purchases (of the times) i had made.

Was the only kid with both the Sega and Sega CD, was great

    • gamaya

I remember playing my first Sonic game, on the pc i’m afraid, since i never had any consoles. My brother gave me Sonic & Knuckles for my birthbay, and to this day i am still annoyed that i never finished it because I got stuck in a level and never cleared it. I played with all 3 characters, being Tails my favorite (he is so cute :P).

  • mikeyDroid

Too bad it’s laggy on my Galaxy Nexus – Uninstalled =/

  • thekaz

My favorite memory is seeing how fast I can get through the first level. Then, a few years ago, I saw my in-laws had an old sega genesis in one of their rooms, so I started making my kids watch me see how fast I could go through the first level.

  • Alex Vidrean

I remember playing Sonic for the first time on the PC. Man, I used to play it for hours. The music and the noise when you collected rings is still going on in my head. I loved it, especially the dizziness I got from so much rolling up and down.

  • MrQuestion

My best (not first) memory of Sonic was the moment you gathered all the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 and could became Super Sonic.

  • triangle

I never owned a game system with the sonic game, but it always struck me as a Super Mario game with a cooler lead character…

  • hreputation

Genesis was my first console and this was one of the first console games for which I had a true addiction. I was a big fan of Sonic 2, loved my man Tails.

  • ndub21

I was obsessed with Sonic and used to play it on my Sega Genesis, which was the first gaming system I had. That was the ultimate until I got the Sega Game Gear because then I could play Sonic on the go! I have very fond memories of Sonic & Tails so I will definitely be buying this game.

  • rantmo

I never had a Genesis myself but I had a number of friends who did. My main memory of Sonic is that I was quite bad at the games. I loved the speed, *loved* it but once it came time for precision, my lack of practice and experience with the game really proved to be detrimental. The gem bonus levels in the first one were my favorite part and I was profoundly bad at those.

  • Dylan

panicking on water levels when you’re about to run out of air

  • Techrocket9

My favorite Sonic game background music is Escape from the City from City Escape, the first level of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

  • Jesse Moreno

So I’m I think eight years old in Savannah, Georgia and my older brother tells me about this game our neighbor has where you control some super fast blue guy. We head next door to play it and I was immediately enthralled, but what really sucked me in was when we didn’t touch the controller for a few seconds and the gathering of 16-bit pixels otherwise known as Sonic the Hedgehog actually taps his foot and stares at you, through the screen, waiting for you to move him. How surreal is that?!

Needless to say since then I’ve been a Sonic fan through and through.

  • azswift

I was a manager at a Software Etc.(they later changed the name to Gamestop), and my friend Rick liked meeting me at the store to play Sonic on the store demo machine before we went out. One night we sat Rick brought pizza and we played straight through. John from mall security was very jealous…

  • timaaustin

I remember going to a family reunion and hiding in my mom and dads oldsmobile 88 all day playing sonic on my Game Gear. (well, for the 1.5 hours that the batteries lasted)

  • borateen

First memory of Sonic is definitely playing Sonic 2 in 2 player mode. Me and my sister messing with each other trying to get the other stuck or make them lose rings. Very unique 2 player experience in a mostly 1 player game.

  • Schmidty850

When I was little, we (my cousin and I) would play sonic all the time on their SEGA Genesis. We had the normal sonic, and then we used to play the Sonic Pinball. I always loved playing Sonic for Sonic reasons, but hated that when we played the Pinball version they would always win. T_T Later on I then got Sonic for my computer that had Knuckles in it which was also so amazing. I miss ya sonic

  • orangestrat

I never owned a console growing up (until my mom bought a wii fit), but I used to watch the Sonic TV show on saturday mornings on YTV. It was actually a really great show! Right now, I’m reminded of an episode where Dr Robotnik had all his minions pour the essence of a fast-growing tree on their feet so they could run as fast as Sonic does. Good stuff :)

  • Steve Nutt

Well this will show my portable gaming roots, I remember playing Sonic on my Sega Game Gear. I spent ages playing Sonic on it, absolutely brilliant.

To be honest that was probably the last time I properly played Sonic, mainly because it just fit a portable gaming console best, nothing else since came close…

  • heeros

Sadly, I have to admit never to have played Sonic. I’ve seen glimpses of it, but I’ve never owned a compatible gaming system, and I don’t think any of my friends had a compatible system in the time I’ve known them.

  • whitenoise

My first sonic memory is playing for hours at my neighbors house. the graphics were AMAZING!

  • christiaangombert

i allways played sonic after church. the neightboorhoodhouse where the service was held, had a room with a sega.after the service we played sonic.i loved going to church!

  • big_strick72

Favorite Sonic game to play or games I should say was Sonic 3 plugged into Sonic & Knuckles. Spent countless hours playing all three characters and collecting all the chaos emeralds to become super/hyper Sonic, Knuckles or Tails.

  • gmaninvan

I remember spending hours on these games as a kid. All the way from the original sonic right up to sonic cd and sonic and tails. Great series, great to see it continue the legacy on the platform of the future. Hook me up with some tegra 3 action!!

  • lefunkay

Oh wow – I played tons of Sonic in my youth, back then, it was a breeze, as the years went by, i just got worse and worse at it, it all fell apart when the Sonic collection was released on ps2, i simply couldn’t do it anymore, the first level was a constant reminder of how i used to love the sonic games…

So! the greatest sonic memory i have, must be the day last fall, when i sat down with my niece on her Wii and finished Sonic and the Black Knight in pretty much one take, i don’t see her often on account of them living quite far away, so having that experience with her and Sonic was fantastic!

She still talks about Sonic almost every time we Skype, and i have since played Sonic games on consoles and PC, and while the Sonic skills of my youth still evade me, the joy is back! (even if it means spending an entire day failing on the first couple of levels)

  • sargas

Grew up playing sonic and lion king on a Genesis. I still remember my grandma watching me on the floor with that music from the casino level

  • Mikes_phone_and_tab

When I was young I remember having a Sega Dreamcast and used to platy sonic almost everyday. Until then, I hadn’t played sonic until Sonic Unleashed for the Wii.

  • aude66

Did play Sonic as a young adult, as a kid it was Space Invaders on the TI99;)

  • Jason Toering

Ah yes, Sonic… How I loved you, all blinking and spinning and blurring. Dammit, now I’ve gotta go break out the Genesis and play.

  • akareem89

The sonic on the Sega Genesis was the first game I ever owned

  • deluxe92

All the Sonic epic fast runs was mind blowing!

  • ZzX44

My favorite memory of Sonic was when I was playing Sonic Colors and when I got the first speed powerup I was like “OMG THIS IS SOO COOOOOOOOOL!”. Until I had played Colors I had kinda forgotten the series due to some of the newer releases but Colors renewed my faith in the series. Sonic Battle 2 and Heroes were great as well. Tons of awesome memories of the little blue guy =D

  • moelsen8

the half-pipe bonus levels on sonic 2 (i think?). i could never beat them all! but i really tried. sonic took up so many hours of my life!

    • moelsen8

oh, and trying to get that cheat code on the first one entered juuuust right! cheat codes were awesome back in the 8 and 16-bit era!

  • wgpeter

We went from the original Atari to the Sega Genesis and Sonic was the first game we owned for it. Played forever! Loved it then, love it now!

  • tweetyscute

My son and I started playing Sonic when it came out on the Wii. We would have marathon game nights to try to get though all the levels

  • tinribs27

I remember when I was 12 years old and I delivered newspapers to save money to buy a Mega Drive (what we called a Genesis in the backwater land of NZ), and when I finally got it with Sonic 2, stayed up for 24 hours straight and didn’t really eat anything and then I passed out and had to go to the hospital. My mother has been distrustful of video games ever since.

  • Brandon Thomas

I remember playing sonic with my little brother for hours on end. he has since passed away, but those times are some of my fondest memories!

  • jorenko

I never had a Sega console growing up, so I did all my Sonic 1-3 playing in short bursts, months apart, at my cousins’ place.

But most of my Sonic-related memories relate to Sonic Adventure 2 on GameCube. When my wife and I were dating, we played a LOT of that game together. Good times. But holy cow, could the multiplayer be infuriatingly unfair sometimes.

Also, the cartoon was pretty good! I wish they’d used that story and universe for the later games rather than what they went with. Princess Sally et al are far superior to Amy, Shadow, etc.

  • JoshuaCaleb

one of my favorite moments of Sonic is when I saw the opening intro to Sonic Adventure. I was like: “Hooooooollllllllyyyyyy crap!!!” Unfortunately, the game left quite a bit to be desired, but my younger, naive self didn’t care; IT WAS SONIC IN 3D!!!!

  • netbay00

As kids, my two friends and I rented a Sega Geneis from blockbuster with the first Sonic and played it for an entire weekend straight. We finally got to the end but couldn’t beat it. Then we had to take it back Monday. I still have never beaten it.

  • Vyrlokar

I got a Genesis (Called Mega Drive in my country) for Christmas, when I was a kid, and Sonic was the only game I had for a while (until I could get some money for some extra games, hard as a kid, you know?). This meant that I played it forwards and backwards. .My fondest memory was beating Episode 1, Act 1 in 29 seconds, while getting the 50 rings required to get into the bonus zone for the chaos emerald.

  • Wolfensteinjd

I was definitely a Sonic kid. At ages 7 & 9, my brother and I dropped the entirety of our combined savings ($120) to get a Sega Genesis, packaged with Sonic 2. I loved the speed of the gameplay, but the brilliance of that game was letting your kid brother play as Tails. Sure, he was “playing”, but whatever he didn’t really matter because the game revolved around you playing as Sonic. It worked out great, except when he’d time a jump wrong on a boss, or in the case of Sonic 3, when he’d fly you into the edge of a cliff…

Another prominent Sonic memory of mine involves getting stuck at the barrel in Carnival Night Zone in Sonic 3. Anyone remember that? In the days before we had the internets, I was stuck at that point for months! I ended up buying a Sonic 3 calendar that advertised gameplay hints, hoping it would get me through that spot. Thankfully, it did. Things sure were different in those days.

  • kicost

Once i played it in a sega genesis my friends though that it was a bad console but at the end they discovered what a sega genesis was!!!Played with it for hours in school… just beautiful

  • slyder0244

I had a gamegear when I was younger and I use to play sonic on it for hours. I loved that little portable gaming machine. Looked so good in color.

  • knok

My favorite memory was being able to play Tails while my friend was playing :)

  • Marc’us H.

By far my most fond memory of Sonic was my neighbor Billy Adams and I spending COUNTLESS hours playing Sonic & Knuckles on the Genesis (remember the funky cartridge?). It took about 3 months total, but we went through and finished all versions of the game. So much fun… Oh i miss those days.

  • Haloruler64

I remember having one of those boxes that had two prong RCA out (mono sound), batteries, a controller sticking out, and had 3 games built in. THAT had Sonic the Hedgehog. Not my first time playing it, but I still have that bad boy next to me.

  • Doug Wesson

I can remember getting the Genesis for my birthday and showing my mother what it looked like when you made Sonic spin up and take off across the side scrolling world. She couldn’t keep up with the action and asked me how in the heck I could. I told her it was because I was young. :-)

  • phaim

I’m almost certainly going to be in the minority here, but I really liked the sonic pinball games. It was Sonic! It was pinball! It was Sonic Spinball!!

  • Conan Kudo

I played Sonic quite a bit as a kid. I went over to a friend’s place to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles on his Sega Genesis and it was a lot of fun. I later got PC versions of Sonic CD and Sonic R, which I played a lot. I didn’t own either a Nintendo or a Sega console. I actually had an old Atari 5200 and a ColecoVision.

Much later on, I got a Nintendo GameCube and bought Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, which is the second best 3D Sonic game out there. The best is Sonic Generations, in my opinion.

My favorite Sonic game as a kid was Sonic CD for the PC. Sadly, when Microsoft abandoned the Windows 9x line for Windows XP, that copy of Sonic CD stopped working properly. Now Sega has re-released a version that works on WinNT based versions of Windows to my eternal delight!

  • twister250

I was never lucky enough to have Sega as a kid. When I went to a friend’s house who did, all I remember playing was Sonic and I couldn’t wait to go back.

  • egg651

My favourite memory is simple: “SEEEEEEEGGGAAAAAAAAA!”

  • Mijoja

I remember having Sonic on my Sega Gamegear, awesome game!

  • Thomas MacDougall

I can remember playing on the gamecube and that tails was always my favorite character

  • @Fatkat52

One favorite game th going to be great.

  • nytrojen

The first time I was ever introduced to video games and consoles proper was because of Sonic 2. I can still remember walking through a school fair where a couple of students had set up a Mega Drive with Sonic 2 and were charging 100 baiza per game (I used to live in Oman).

The moment i saw that blue blur whizzing through loops and tearing across the screen I was mesmerized… my life changed that day and I resolved to punch every Nintendo fan in the coccyx if they ever badmouthed Sonic or Sega.

That was my very first memory of Sonic, but I think my favourite (or at least most memorable) would have to be Tails’ perpetual screams of “SONIKUUUUUU” as I played through Sonic Adventure on my imported Japanese Dreamcast (I was one of the first in Australia to have one!)

  • andystolemywallet

I didn’t have a console until my family got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas when I was 10. My only means of playing a game was to go to Toys-R-Us and play the kiosk games. For the longest time, they had Sonic the Hedgehog on it. I didn’t care if I was bad at it, or if anyone was behind me wanting to play, because it was loads of fun. I would sit there for a long time, hoping my family would be (window) shopping for a long time.

One day I went back to see it replaced by some really boring game (I can’t remember it). “Maybe next time it’ll be back”, I thought. But the kiosk was eventually just displaying a black screen before being removed.

I had the chance to play Sonic after that, and those moments were fun. But, oddly enough, that was my favorite.

  • Varemenos

I remember playing this exact game in my sega mega drive, it was pure awesomeness!

  • spankyj25

I got the Genesis, and also Sonic, at release. I’ll never forget when I first started blasting through the levels and thought, “this kills Mario!” Discovering that you needed bubbles the survive underwater…classic gaming!

  • Mark Beaty

My Sonic memory was hearing the ring of the rings collecting them after a hearty bounce off the bumper and spinning through the air. Platforming gold!!!

  • SnDaa

Sonic with friends was just awesome and the SEEGAA intro was great :D

  • ZzX44

Btw it looks like Sonic and Tails are 69′ing in that pic,

  • big007hed

I got Sonic 1 as kind of a divorce present… SO my Dad and I would play for hours when I visited him.
Great game, played all of them, Tails is my favorite. Even watched the cartoon.

  • uknowme

I have to say when I popped the original Sonic cartridge in and heard Sega I was blown away! Then the speed was amazing. Who could forget the bonus stages, rolling around and trying not to hit the exit bumpers.

  • aranea

Growing up in Turkey I didn’t have a console so I didn’t play Sonic. I saw the cartoon on TV but that was kind of boring. So my favorite Sonic moment comes from science. Did you know that a human gene is named Sonic Hedgehog? It all starts with Drosophila. A gene that causes larva to look deformed was named Hedgehog and then when they identified the same gene in humans they called it Sonic Hedgehog after the game.

  • Willy Morgan

I spent the entire summer between my freshman and sophomore years in college working and saving for a game system; Everyone was making plans for the evening; some people were going to one of the frat houses for a party. Others were going to the movies. I was asked what my plans were and I said that I was going to go back to my room and play Sonic on my Sega Genesis. I had barely started the first level when there was a knock on my door and five people showed up with pizza and soda wanting to play. For the rest of that year, we had a weekly Sega Session. One of my closest friends, whom I hadn’t met yet, was one of the people in that group and without Sonic, I wouldn’t be lucky enough to be able to have such a good friend.

  • kie

best moment was learning that with Sonic and Knuckles you could plug in sonic 3 and play a different version of that game. Catridge into catridge? Genious!

  • eazyean1

best part playign sonic was beating EGGMAN !! damn him and his flying contraption !

  • Tsany

Unfortunately I didn’t have SEGA as a kid. …. only a Bulgarian knockoff of Apple II

  • QuantumRand

Not only did I have a Genesis, but I even had a Game Gear. Those idiots with Game Boys got shafted as soon as the sun went down. Sonic was my go to game for long car rides. I even remember this one time when I stole the batteries from the alarm clock and the remote at a hotel because my Game Gear’s were running low. I felt kinda bad about it, but Karma got back at me when I left my Nintendo Power magazine with the Harvest Moon planting charts at the next hotel we stayed at.

  • Omnipro

My fondest Sonic memory is when I got my Sega Genesis the first console I bought on my own which came bundled with Sonic 2. I was so happy I didn’t have to share with my sisters and I could play Sonic uninterrupted.

  • mrfidgit

My first memory containing Sonic was playing Sonic on a gamegear in a supermarket. I wasn’t allowed to own any Video-Game platform at all, so i had to go there to play. Since i were too young, my bro had to come along and as always took the game boy to play. So i had to play on the game gear every kid around said “suc*ed”. I remember I loved the speed and colours of this game, yeah actually i nagged my parents to buy one, just playing Sonic for some minutes.I think my brother wasnt too happy when he saw me that happy NOT being able to play on the “hyped” game boy =)
Since then I prefer Sonic, who’s mario?!

  • InFamous__Joker______

id wake up every morning to watch sonic. id run around the house naked

  • Carlos icee0711

I wasn’t the kid on the block with a Sega machine, it was my friend across the block. All the neighborhood kids would gather and take turns for hours and his mom would make us spaghetti-o’s. Perfect memory right there.

  • Abideen Mohamed

I grew up playing Sonic, excellent game. I was not the only one on the block to have it, more like the only one not to have it, as my parents couldn’t afford to buy it. So I would play it by my neighbour. My favourite had to be Sonic 4 for PS3.

  • cyanslowly

My favourite sonic memory is being floored by the music the first time I played sonic cd.

  • nahun

I played sonic a lot as a kid on our Sega Genesis. We never had many games (like 5 maybe), and Sonic was always the best one. I still can hear Sonic’s sound as he speeds away in my head and I haven’t played in over a decade.

  • Cole Loomis

I remember playing it on my cousins old sega.

  • b.assenza

Did you play Sonic as a kid? Were you the only kid on the block with a Sega Genesis when all your friends had a Nintendo console? What was your favorite game to feature Sonic?

I used to go over to my best friends house and play sonic everyday after school and we break out the sega genesis and play all the old sonic games. I remember when sonic adventure came out and we would spend everyday on the dreamcast trying to finish story mode with Bigs (which was nearly impossible because fishing is difficult). Seeing sonic go super sonic was always an experience for us as we would jump up and down and then run around the house as super sonic. Honestly my favorite sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle because ALL of my friends would play it. Then when we all finished that game we would go back and play Sonic the Hedgehog on the genesis until we beat them all for the 100th time.

  • Alexander Castillo

My favorite memory was spending countless hours playing Sonic Advance with my friends. Good times :)

  • Dan13

When I got my first game system, the gamecube, I was only allowed one game. Not knowing anything, I got “Sonic Mega Collection.” Best. Decision. Ever. I played for who knows how many hours. Then I bought as many games of the series as I could. I watched the animated series, and ran around the house with my siblings pretending to be different Sonic characters. Those were the times…

  • MJM128

My best memory was playing Super Sonic Racing on the pc. The music was catchy, the gameplay was awesome (come on it was sonic and who can resist grabbing those rings!?) It had all the different levels with each individual character having their own unique power. I loved tails being able to double jump into a flying fox, or knuckles being able to kinda glide. Ah, good times. I think it’s time for me to install it again!

  • cartoonman

First time I saw Sonic was at my neighbor’s way back in ’93. Mainly I recall how fast paced it was, compared to their other favorite game: “Myst”.

  • r1ch

My brother insisted on my parents buying us a NES and then a SNES, so I missed out on Sonic at home.

Maybe that’s why I spent so much time around my friends house with the guy who had a Mega Drive. :D

  • kimminer1

When I was younger I remember playing Sonic Chaos at a friends house. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for this great giveaway!

  • suspence

So I would have to say my best experience with Sonic would have to be my first day ever playing a console game. For one Christmas, I believe when I was 5, my parents went all out for Christmas and got me my first tv, a Sega Genesis, and Mathblaster…and more importantly, Sonic II! I know that I would have been a completely different person if I had never encountered Sonic. But I was so excited that I played the game all day, except the the mandatory thirty minutes that I had to spend on Mathblaster (thanks Mom) to help balance out the gaming. I never did beat the game that day, but I was able to transcend the life of a typical five-year-old that day. That was short-lived by the blisters that I woke up to on practically all of my fingers the next day, but I like to think that playing the game through the pain of the blisters actually taught me perseverance..That’s how I like to justify it anyway

The first experience I had was with my brother. He was playing it during summer time and I was bored out of my mind. Of course I am little sister, so i bugged him until he let me play with him. I played so, well, he threw the controller and went to his room. After that day i had to play the little sister card and always let him kick my butt on the games.

  • MrMrMan

Using Super Sonic in space at the end of Sonic and Knuckles to fight Robotnic.

  • ajhall62

I never really played Sonic, but i would be more than happy to have a go at it with this Transformer Prime setup.

  • Logan Edwards

All I remember is playing Sonic the Hedgehog on some Sega system. My favorite part was having Sonic ball up and ‘spin up.’ That’s about all I remember…. oh and he was fast!

  • Daniel Bolen

I remember playing the first sonic the hedgehog game on my Sony game gear and when I’d finally make it to the last stage, my batteries would die and I’d have to start over. I used to get really frustated, but I still continued. I would love to win a Tansformer Prime, to experience Sonic with a Tegra 3 processor, and a tablet that can actually hold a charge! 4 + 1 Ninja core ROCKS!!!

  • NamelessTed

I remember when we got the Sega Genesis when I was a kid, thing was awesome. We would play Sonic 2 for hours on end. That game began the non-stop fighting that my brother and I would have when trying to decide who’s turn it was.

But, the best memory, by far, is when we were playing Sonic in the basement and our younger brother (about 2 or 3 years old at the time) came walking down the stairs with a candle in his hand… eating it. We had to hide the candle so he would stop eating it, so we naturally shoved it to the bottom of our huge toy box. Of course he found the candle and continued to eat the entire thing. Good times.

  • Stacey Harris

I loved Sonic when I was a kid, I loved the game and the cartoon the character was just so much fun.

  • w3elf

my favorite part was the racing game for Sonic. The best part is when tails spins his tails as he reaches full speed!

  • rockosolido

I remember being an avid NES/SNES fan, then one day I went to a friend’s house who had just gotten a Sega Genesis. He told me I had to try this new Sonic game, popped in the cartridge, and I lost my mind.

Ever since then, I’ve been a huge Sonic fan. I even game the awful Adventure and Unleashed games a shot to fill the void, had my hopes set high for Generations — which wasn’t terrible — but have been nothing but happy with Sonic 4. Brings me back to sitting wide-eyed in front of an old TV just trying to climb higher in each level!

  • edsondj

I remember when I first got the Sega Genesis, Sonic I and II were the only games I had for a really long time. I was quite happy with them, though.

  • kazahani

I remember the original Sonic the Hedgehog game came out when I was 8 years old, and I loved to go over to my friend’s house and play it. One time his mom called him downstairs for dinner, but I just stayed up there by myself in his room and played for like an hour!

  • Alec Waddelow

Sonic 1 and 2 were great

  • tenkely

I loved playing Sonic on my Genesis when I was a kid… the day I saw my first Super Sonic was magical… but my best memory is more recent. When they were releasing the HD versions of Sonic on the PS3 my wife and I were at Best Buy. I was busy playing with phones when I noticed she had wandered off. I searched around for a bit and heard some giggling that sounded familiar. I followed it to the games section and heard the giggling accompanied by the familiar sounds of Sonic collecting rings, then I saw her, my wife having a blast. Turns out my wife is a total Sonic-ophile (hah), she freaking loves that game and I had no idea. It was pretty cool to see her reliving her youth with such joy.

  • Donnieace

I remember playing the Sonic at a department store. I somehow magically got a Sega Genesis for Christmas and it was one of the happiest moments of my childhood. Everyone else had the NES and I wanted one too. But after playing and looking at the colorful stages in Sonic the Hedgehog, I was hooked. I can still remember the music of the different stages. Damn, that was the game to have back then.

  • rfvgyhn

Battling metal sonic for the first time will always be with me. Also, the first time I heard eggman and thinking WTF?

  • Matt H

My first memory is playing sonic on the Sega genesis my grandfather bought me. Im not sure why exactly but my favorite memory is playing sonic on my phone, there’s just something about being able to whip out my phone and play sonic when or wherever i want to. unfortunately with my latest phone upgrade i am no longer able to play sonic episode 4… i have a snapdragon processor not a tegra..

  • coryteague

The very first time I met my step brothers they were playing Sonic. it is a memory I will never forget.

  • awlarge

Leaving the Genesis paused for dinner because I was *almost* done after hours of struggling. We don’t need no stinkin’ save option!

  • GrendelJapan

I recall playing Sonic way back when I was in high school. I used to babysit some next door neighbors, one of which had a genesis. We played Sonic for hours when it first came out. Fun times…

  • Slith

Sonic on the Genesis nearly got me kicked out of college in the early 90s!

  • Daniel Brierton

I remember wanting Sonic 3 so badly. I rented it once, but didn’t get a chance to complete it. I then remember getting Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube, and finally being able to complete it. Imagine my joy then when I realised you could put Sonic 3 into the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and then actually got to be Super Tails. Still one of my favourite games to this day.

man o man.. my greatest sonic moment was when i played it on the gamegear… it was years ahead of its time

  • CJ LaFleur

I’ve played Sonic on a few platforms and it’s always entertaining. Love sonic, love the transformer prime.

  • psipher

I’ve never played Sonic, but look forward to playing once I win the tablet :-)

  • Rhino3081

Loved playing Sonic 2 and one of favorite moments was when you became Super Sonic. So Awesome!

  • Snoogans

Its kind of a newer version, but my fondest memory of sonic was playing Sonic Adventure 2 Battle with my girlfriend on the gamecube. She would always beat me at racing, and chao’s, and just about every aspect of that game, but it was fun.

  • Shearefrustrayshun

My Favorite Sonic memory is the when we moved and I found my old Genesis where I had packed it away, and hooked it back up after it had been sitting in the attic for many years and I got to sit down and play it with my son and see him have just as much fun with that game as I used to. Thinking back on it, that may just be my favorite gaming memory, not just favorite Sonic memory, even if I don’t win, thank you for getting me to remember that moment

  • joogleme16

I didn’t have a SEGA growing up so I used to be so excited when I could visit my cousins house, so that I could play hers. One of her few games was Sonic! I remember getting farther then anyone and finally dying on this one board that reminded me of some future oil refinery. Good times!I didn’t have a SEGA growing up so I used to be so excited when I could visit my cousins house, so that I could play hers. One of her few games was Sonic! • jeffb34

I remember when Sonic first came out on the Sega Genesis and I was disappointed that I was still stuck with an original NES. I would also go over to my friend’s house all the time so I can finally play the game. Years later I finally had my own copy of the game after buying the Sonic collection for the gamecube

  • atul0002

  • Cameron_onick

The first game I played on the Sega Genesis was sonic.

  • Canterrain

I remember my first encounter with sonic. A neighbor had it, we had nes. And suddenly I found myself wishing I owned a sega system. So fast! Sonic brings back good memories.

  • Nicholas Vettese

I remember my brother thinking he was all that with his Nintendo, but it was my Sega Genesis that had the most awesome games, hurling Sonic through the loops and destroying the evil doctor.

Now I get to do the same to the fanboys with my Android…

  • classic_hero

i remember going to my cousins house and playing on his genesis for hours until I had to get picked up. Those were truly the best days, at least maybe until now

  • jamal adam

I think that Sonic was the first game that I truly loved and played constantly. It was one of the first video games I ever played and still to this do, love the game. I probably played it on a Dreamcast because at the time I came to the US, that was the first console I was introduced to.

  • R.S

Neither I nor any of my friends had a Genesis so the only time I’d get to play Sonic was when I’d go with my parents to Target.

  • kwill1000

The Sega Channel! Sonic, Echo the Dolphin, Road Rash! AMAZING!

  • JhonnyQ

So many good memories… I assure you, that sound when you pick up 20ish gold rings at full speed is just stuck on my head, together with the mario music and the tetris theme. One of the good oldies for sure.

  • pablo1215

I remember getting to play the first sonic the hedgehog with my sega genesis console. Oh those were the days.

  • techvudu

I have to say the Sonic music is what sticks with me most. It will forever be implanted in my mind as the theme music to all things Sega. That and the sound made when you spin for a long time and it makes that sawblade sound. Love that game. Plus the Sega commercials where the shizz.

  • Dalamar

My favorite sonic memory was when I finally discovered Gold Super Sonic. I would literally run back and fourth through the stages just to continually play as gold Super Sonic. It was also awesome that I was the youngest of my siblings so I always played games WAY after my siblings had their fill, yet they didn’t find out about this, but I did.

  • Jeice

Although I grew up playing many Sonic games, the one in particular that sticks out to me is actually one of the newer (sorts) games. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle ate up an entire summer for me. My brothers, my couins, and I just sat there playing it every day, and stayed up to the wee hours of the morning going over every level and thoroughly enjoying the two player competition modes. As great as the classic games are, nothing compares in my head to the thrill of laughing and enjoying that game with my family.

  • krishna sheth

in my naborhood i was one of the first one to get it and it was so fun when all the kids came over to play

  • sangheon96

I love sonic!! and im asian

  • mbrwhs

After the playing the first game back in 1991. I was soo excited to get the sequel, and I was able to get it as a Christmas present after a month of its release. I remembered reading about the reviews in GamePro Magazine, and was stoked when I first popped the cartridge into the Genesis and heard, “SEGA!” I loved it better than any other Sonic game actually.

  • Marcin Juszkiewicz

I have never played Sonic but may play current one if I win :)

  • Ecarttev

My best sonic memory was on a Halloween night. I was 17 and so was my best friend. I was taking my little brothers around the neighborhood when my friend jumps out of his bushes dressed in the same sonic outfit that he got when he was 5. He then when around collecting candy with my brothers and I.12th year in a row he wore it.

  • Adryan maldonado

It was the epic music that i love about sonic. The music that played when you first fight dr. robotnik in green hill zone was super memorable. I never get tired of the music or sound effects. Also there is a sound some of the cash registers make at some of the convenience stores when they ring some thing up it makes the exact same sound that sonic makes when you get rings in the game. I always wonder if they ripped of sonic

  • raul_gjs

I never had a Sega, but a neighbor had onea and we played Sonic Chaos, those times were amazing, then he moved, and I never knew about him anymore…

  • Kilo720

I was a sega kid back in the days but best sonic game gotta be sonic 2 but Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD Come to a close 2nd &3rd

  • kaoiv

I played Sonic quite a bit as a kid. I remember being afraid of the level where the water kept rising, but I am not sure which Sonic that was.

  • teecruz

If this doesn’t win me the prize, I’ll be sad. It’s one of my most fondest and prideful childhood memories:

when I was a kid, I stole my uncle’s Sonic for SEGA cartridge. Later finding out, it didn’t work for my SNES

  • xCrios

When Super Mario 64 came out, I remembered being amazed to finally control Mario in full 3d. However, when I went to my cousin’s house and played Sonic Adventure, I HAD to borrow his Dreamcast for at least a week because I became instantly hooked to the game. Sonic transitioned extremely well into 3d, and I still play Sonic Adventure 2 Battle today.

  • Luke Haviland

my dentist had a system set up in the waiting room. we didn’t have a system at home but i loved playing the game. It made going to the dentist worth it. i actually have fond memories playing in that waiting room.haha even though i still hate the dentist.

  • Lucian Veliman

It was so long ago… but it was fun.
