My Xbox Live lands on Android

Ever since Microsoft’s My Xbox Live app first arrived on iOS, I was dying to get my hands on a version of the app for Android. Today, the good folks from Redmond have made that dream come true.

The launch of the Android version of the My Xbox Live app is bittersweet. While it is nice to see the app finally hit Google Play, it’s missing some key functionality.

After signing into the My Xbox Live app, Xbox Live users can check out the latest game trailers and promotional videos Microsoft has to offer, update their profile and avatar, manage messages with friends and flick through achievements and trophies earned through various Xbox games.

My Xbox Live for Android looks amazing. It’s smooth and intuitive. It just lacks some of the most important features the app has to offer on other platforms, like the ability to tether your device to your Xbox¬†and use it as a remote. With the update made available to the iOS My Xbox Live app, iPhone users are able to browse a list of their most recent activity from the app, and use the remote function with media apps like Netflix.

Microsoft hasn’t laid out any plans to bring remote functionality to the My Xbox Live Android app, and with Xbox SmartGlass right around the corner, it might not be any time soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft waited until SmartGlass to release any major updates for Android users.

Remote control functionality or not, at least I can finally check my Xbox Live messages on the go. To install the My Xbox Live app for Android, use the download widget below.

Been a long time coming for this one, but it’s good to finally be invited to the party instead of looking in from outside. Enjoy, everybody!

Time to get rid of Spark 360. It served me well for many years. I wonder what other stuff they’ll be bringing over. Hopefully they’ll be bringing Zune music over since they moved it under xbox live.

I don’t even have a xbox and i can admit that this app looks pretty neat, i wish we had a full psn app for android considering sony and android has a relationship.

I’ve always been envious of Xbox’rs and the Windows app and now of course the Android app.

Not sure if you know but there is a Playstation app. However,

      1) It’s not available for the US.
      2) I’ve read/heard it’s pretty crappy and has several issues.

Honestly, as long as it accurately listed my friends list, I’d be happy. Now obviously, being able to send messages, visit the PS store, watch videos, and sync downloads to your PS3 or PS Vita would be great but to me, those would just be bonuses. All I want is to be able to see what friends are online!

And yet no ICS styling…Weren’t Microsoft fans complaining about Chrome not following the Metro guidelines a couple of days ago?

Hmmmm….giving a stranger your account log in and password or using the first party app. Decisions…decisions…

funny you mention that app, I was pretty concerned logging in with my details at first but finally gave in. Never once had a problem with that app or problems with my XBL account for the year and a half I’ve had it. Although even running on ICS and my HTC One S, the My Xbox app runs a lot smoother

never had an issue and i have had it since day one.. works great on my gnex and every phone ive had prior

You have to applaud the Xbox division of Microsoft for going multi-OS. It would have been very easy to say “Only on Windows Phone”. Having the app actually be decent is just icing on the cake.

Finally, I was wondering when this will land on android.

  • shadowxof

now we just have to wait it out for smartglass

  • Glenbot3000

Why has MS gone against all the time and effort Android has put into the design specification of ICS? They would’ve spent a lot of money and had a lot of people working on this app, yet no one though it’d be a good idea to consult the outlined design…?

Nice! If only Sony would do something with the PSN on Smart Phones.

  • Prince77

I have been waiting for this since I found out about it on the Windows Phone, it looks great and works great no issues from me.

Finally I can check my messages on the go..That alone makes it worth it..

I like the seeing my avatar dressed up also..

I think that this app is a really good idea. The ability to correspond with your friends on Xbox is a nice feature. I would also like to have a similar app for playstation. I did do an app search on google play for such an app but I was only successful in finding apps that showed which of your friends was on online but without a messaging feature. If anyone knows of such an app let me know :-)
