First picture of new Amazon Kindle Fire leaks out

Amazon is expected to announce their new lineup of Kindle devices on September 6th, and we might have our first glimpse of the next Kindle Fire. Chris Ziegler of The Verge was sent a purported shot of the next Kindle Fire and told that a “pair” of Fires is likely.

Previous rumors from Digitimes suggested that Amazon would release 7 and 10-inch tablets in the second half of 2012, but we don’t know if both devices will be unveiled at the same time. Since Amazon is trying to become the tablet leader, I believe we will see a 10 inch tablet next week.

We can see the new Kindle Fire has a front-facing camera, but we don’t know if it will have a rear facing camera. I expect Amazon will try to keep the overall cost of the tablet down, and a rear camera might not make the list of features.

Expect more details to leak out over the coming days.

As many have already commented, it’s pretty ugly. But beyond that, I wonder what Amazon can do that will make it better than the Nexus 7. The fundamental problem is the lack of google apps.

final nail in the coffin for Lamazon

I hope they keep the rear camera off.

That way, people won’t look like those iDiots who carry around ipads to take pictures.

Agree, they better call this big mess the Kindle Romney!

        Ha! Snap.

It will probably work well so they can’t possibly name it the “Kindle Obama”!

  • MoSDeeb

Its not the best looking, but I’ll wait until the full device is revealed. Perhaps there’s more to it than the odd texturing on the sides.

The Nexus 7 has rendered the 7″ Kindle dead.

I couldn’t agree more, this is ugly. Also, the placement of the front-facing camera is terrible, if that is a 7in screen.

    • Bpear96

      looks more like 8-9.5″

It would have to be cheaper than the nexus 7 for me to think about buying this. The lack of Google apps doesn’t make me want to go out and scoop one up

  • skyflakes

Too ugly. I don’t think this is it.

      Thats whats she said.

My mom got a free kindle free, and i am really happy that she got it for free, because that thing is just, idk how to feel about it besides i am happy i didnt pay for it..hope the new one comes with better hardware, but i doubt it will even come close to that of the N7…google just needs to make more available so they wont sell out so often and can be the one to suck some of that tablet market share and force people to follow their lead

Not a very good first impression, IMO.

From an update on the original story: Update: Though we know that this image originates with Amazon, another source adds the following:

“That picture you guys posted is not the new Kindle Fire. I know because I have held the new Kindle Fire in my hand and played with it for extensive periods of time… the bezel on the new Kindle Fire is wider. It has sloping sides like the old Motorola Xoom, so it sits nicely in the hand.”

Regardless, I think Amazon is going to have to come out with something really impressive to pull sales away from the N7; which I think will be hard to do unless they undercut the price significantly.

  • LinuxFrenzy

Personally I would take the Nexus 7 over the kindle fire anytime simply because the N7 is a pure Google experience tablet.

So… interesting now if was a Tablet that offered the “Google” experience then it would be great. But to get a tablet where the UI is completely Amazon, down to the market. This is like something that can only appeal to previous Kindle owners. But I guess its an alternative to the Nexus 7, which i adore.

  • Nathan D.

Well, hopefully it is better than last year Kindle fire, since that wasn’t all that good. On the other hand sales numbers say something else.

  • Blinder

Does anyone know if this one will be available in Canada?

  • BigCiX

If it has Amazons UI skin call it a failure.

  • mojeda

It’s going to be pretty neck and neck between the new Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 has out performed the Kindle Fire greatly and it comes with the latest and greatest Android OS, 4.1 Jellybean.

Is Amazon going to pull this one off like they did with the first one but this time with the Nexus 7 around? Google is marketing the Nexus 7 via their homepage and we can guess Amazon will be doing the same, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

If it is indeed a 8.5-10″ screen at a reasonable price and reasonable internals (dual/quad core with at least 1 gb of ram), I would consider picking it up if CM or AOKP gets ported to it. The whole Amazon App Store ecosystem is a real turnoff.
