Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Note II video roundup

When Samsung first launched the Galaxy Note, it received more criticism than praise. People said it was too big. A gimmick. And it had a stylus? It had to be a joke right? As it turns out, the Note was a huge hit. People couldn’t get enough of that vibrant display, the ultra-sensitive S Pen integration and sleek, surprisingly more pocketable than not design.

Yesterday, we got our first real taste of the true successor to the Galaxy Note throne. Rocking a 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1280×720, the Note II comes with a 1.6 GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, a 3100 mAh battery, a backside illuminated 8 MP camera on the rear and a backside illuminated 1.9 MP in front, all wrapped up in Samsung’s custom version of Jelly Bean.

It sounds absolutely great on paper, but does that translate to a great first impression? We’ve gathered a list of the best hands on videos from around the web to give you an idea of just what people thought. Spoiler alert: it’s awesome.

What do you think, does the Samsung Galaxy Note II look like a winner, or is it too soon to tell? Let us know what you think about the Note II in the comments below.

I was just playing with the original Note the other day and I was loving that display. This phone is starting to grow on me.

you must be kidding…Screen is crap compared to OneX

      • Adryan maldonado

you obviously havent used the original galaxy note have you???

        • Styx River

I have, he is right, the display on the One X is much better. The edges are much sharper and clearly defined. Before being a troll by starting your comment with “obviously, you’ve never” as so many people do, why not do ask actual side by side comparison? I have, and even have pics proving it. Samsung makes great displays, but I didn’t realize there were so many Yarrells. A lot of downvotes for something posted that was true. Stop reading Richard’s posts and dip a side by side yourself. The proof is right in front of you.

^ mentally fix the typos, stupid auto correct.

I had a One X and it was not reliable at all. Great phone…poor quality. I now have the Note (and would never go back to the One X). Both phones have great screens.

too big, i rather purchase an 4inches iPhone 5. Samsung doesnt listen to its customers, why?

      • Kevin

Or you could choose a Samsung screen with a 4″ screen. How about 4.3″? You want a 4.6″? 3.7″? It’s called variety and why doesn’t Apple listen to………oh never mind. Hopeless sheep.

          Don’t feed the trolls.

I have to say Sammy is doing well. The nifty new features are cool. I hope the next Nexus includes similar or more useful software features.

It’s still unconfirmed but it is said that the Note II is using a different layout when it comes to pixels. Something a little more true to pixel density.

“It’s still unconfirmed but it is said that the Note II is using a different layout when it comes to pixels. Something a little more true to pixel density.”

I’d like to know more :) There’s no mention of a “plus” anywhere, but I sure hope someone does a macro shot of the layout to show if anything has changed. ‘Cause I’ve noticed that the SGS3 seems to have better quality screens than the Gnex.

I don’t have link right now. But phonearena reported with microscope images that Note 2 screen has non-pentile RGB pixels. It has a little different sub-pixel layout than traditional RGB pixel screen though.

      • lilmoe

        here :)

the arrangement of the sub-pixels are indeed improved and much closer to true RGB

  • lxgeorge

Wow. Those TouchWiz features are actually fantastic. If my Samsung Behold 2 era self read that he would be mortified. Good job Samsung!

I think its a freaking winner fo sho!!!!! I mean double ram, double the cores, and jelly bean(even if it is touchwizd)??? who wouldnt want it. The biggest thing im impressed about is how well they learned from the original note and really focused on the Spen. Its sounds way more ergonomic than before since they made it longer and a bit thicker. Also they apparently improved the software for the spen all to gether to make it way more pressure sensitive. OH and cant forget about the bigger battery. Im really excited to see how it holds up since it is 600 mah bigger but im hoping the screen is very efficient and that the Exynos 4412(correct me if i got that wrong) quad core is also just as efficient cause if they are this thing wlll compete directly with the Razr maxx in terms of battery life.

I love the touchwiz features but I don’t like the touchwiz nature UI. I liked touchwiz 4.0 UI.

  • kwills88

i think this might be the first time i’ve ever said Holy sh*t to a phone, i was questioning it at first, but those features, i can see myself using a lot of them.

  • droilfade

A&M should start an official YouTube channel. We want to hear what you have to say about the devices!

    • Taylor Wimberly

We have a YouTube chan. I’ve been to IFA before but I couldn’t make it out this year.

  • cwjones4

wow. almost makes me want to return my GS3 and get the new note. very cool new features

  • Nathan D.

Good successor to an already great phonblet.

  • OpenIntro

    dear lord i want this.

  • Dan13

Dang, that is one awesome phone. It makes me wish I hadn’t picked up the original note a few months back. Maybe I should have waited… But if I’m always waiting for the next big thing, I’d never get an android phone. That would be very very very not good.

I’m happy for those who get this great phone. Enjoy!

  • Heetskore

My Frankenstein hands want to hold it.

  • Bgor

    Its great and spectecular.
    2G RAM, improved stylus pen
    Quad core, n 4G LTE
My current Note is good already.
Well, new model is the best.
    Touchwiz feature is amazing.
The battery upgrade (3100mAh) is also a thoughtful application.
I would be very happy to buy one.

No question what happens next for me. On day one when this hits Tmobile I will adding this to my Galaxy S3. The Galaxy Note 2 along with the Galaxy S3 just makes Apple iphone so useless it’s pitiful what apple is peddling to it’s users…I can see this arriving on Tmobile in November with the snapdragon s4 pro and with the great battery life i get with my Galaxy S3 now I can only imagine how much better that will be..

  • charlie88

TouchWiz is soooo ugly, too complicated and way too many features just crammed in everywhere. I lvoe having tons of features, but some are just unnecessary and just clutter up the UI

  • charlie88

A spiral as a gallery? What’s the point? Why make these features? Spend your time on more useful things Samsung. Like that horrible UI. Grey-blueish bars on top, yellow canvasy menus sometimes. Black backgrounds with small greyish text (email app). So ugly.

am just hoping the nexus doesn’t murder it!

Ours (my wife’s and mine) do quite well as far as battery goes. No problems getting through the day at all.

I watched every single one of these videos! I cannot get enough of this phone. Hoping for a US launch similar to the GS3 so that it comes to T-Mobile right away. Almost upgraded to the GS3 a few days ago, but now I’m glad I didn’t!

Am I understanding correctly that the US versions will include the quad-core processor unlike the GS3? I thought that the quad core Exynos didn’t support the correct radios here in the US.

I can’t believe I am willing to overlook Touchwiz for the large screen, quad-core processor, 2GB ram, and some cool software design features.

Of course maybe the fall Nexus announcements will change my mind!

    • crashvoodoo

The only thing stopping buying out the remaining month on my contract and jumping on this day one is the next nexus phone(s). I made the same mistake last time and got the Desire Z rather than the wait another month for the Nexus S.

  • cb2000a

This phone should be great for video editing and now there is a multi track recorder in the app store (for those that want a recording studio in their pocket,
