Android Gaming Weekly: Avengers Initiative, Wrestling Revolution, Modern Combat 4

Welcome back to the return of our regular column Android Gaming Weekly, where we recap all the new releases and highlights every Wednesday. We post small bits throughout the week related to Android games, but readers have requested a condensed summary that makes it easier to keep up with all the latest news. Read on for this week’s best in Android gaming.

Top 10 New Android Games This Week

Developer says: “Return to the arena and bask in the blood-hungry cheers of the crowd as you fight to become a legend! Equip lethal weapons and epic armor in your quest to achieve blood-soaked victory! Journey through the Empire, leaving blood-thirsty bosses in your wake as the all new animated comic story unfolds!”

Taylor says: Awesome sequel to the top-rated original. Swipe controls are easy to learn, and it’s fun to master the counter attacks and combos. Game is free to play and I’ve been enjoying it for a couple days without spending a dime on in-app purchases.

Developer says: “Specifically developed for touchscreen platforms, Total War Battles: SHOGUN is a new real-time strategy game from the makers of the award-winning Total War series. Total War Battles delivers quick-fire, tactical combat balanced with intuitive building and unit management. All set in a beautifully illustrated Medieval Japan.”

Taylor says: The game sells for $4.99, but this comes from SEGA. It looks to be a must-buy for fans of real time strategy games.

Developer says: “What are you waiting for? Enlist with the Bombshells today! These sexy pilots love fast planes, big guns, and shooting T.O.O.L. out of the sky. Bombshells will take you directly to the danger zone with unique environments, devious enemies, and ridiculous weapons!”

Taylor says: Glu has quickly become my favorite Android developer. All their new releases tend to be freemium games, but I have found I can enjoy them without being forced into making in-app purchases. This latest title looks like a winner.

Developer says: “Tap, pinch, and swipe your way to victory in this revolutionary touch-screen wrestling game! Every step taken, every punch thrown, and every move executed is now more satisfying than ever thanks to the intuitive control system. And with up to 10 characters on screen and dozens of fully interactive items and weapons, it’s the wildest action your mobile device can handle!”

Taylor says: Lots of users keep asking when the WWE game will come to Android, so I thought I would share this alternative wrestling game. It actually came out last month, but it was updated recently with some new controls. A free version offers a preview of the gameplay and a paid version unlocks all the different modes.

Developer says: “Order Up!! To Go is a delicious blend of frantic kitchen cooking and restaurant empire building. Chop, roll, slice, and dice your way to culinary stardom. Optimized specially for Android, featuring perfect controls and comic kitchen action, this is one time management game that will keep you busy for hours.”

Taylor says: This is actually one of the best fast food games I have played, but I encountered a lot of problems with the in game ads. Half-way through every level I was forced to watch a Jack In The Box ad and then the game started over. You can remove ads with an in-app purchase, but the developer needs to fix this bug.

Developer says: “Experience the classics that started the video game revolution! Now, on Android! Download Activision Anthology to receive the classic hit KABOOM! for FREE, and collect up to 45 classic Activision and Imagic games!”

Taylor says: I’m old enough to remember playing most of these games on Atari. Younger gamers might be bored by some of these titles, but there are over 45 classic games to unlock.

Developer says: “Blazing Souls Accelate, sequel to Spectral Souls, in exclusivity on Android! The last installment of the Spectral Souls series is right there for your favorite device. En route for a new exciting Tactical RPG in the world of Neverland!”

Taylor says: With a price of $14.99, this one is for serious RPG fans only. I always heard good things about Spectral Souls, but I never played it. Less than 50 people have purchased the game, so you might want to wait a little for more reviews to come in.

Developer says: “McPixel is a save-the-day guy that you guide through short challenges in an oldschool point’n’click fashion. The goal in each challenge is to prevent stuff from blowing up using available tools! You have only 20 seconds to save the day! Think quick!”

Taylor says: Check out the light version for free to see if you enjoy it and then grab the paid version for $2.99 if you want to support the developer.

Developer says: “Save the world, and your girlfriend. Meet the newest recruit in the Adult Swim Games army: Major Mayhem. He’s got an itchy trigger finger, some scratchy stubble, and a fondness for shooting dudes in the face. Run and gun your way through gorgeous 3D environments as you embark on a mission to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend from the Forces of Evil.”

Taylor says: This game was released a couple weeks ago, but we somehow missed it. Major Mayhem looks like a fun little action game and it’s backed by Adult Swim so you know it has to be good.

Developer says: “In Kingdom Royale you construct your own kingdom by managing your natural resources, mining for gems and tending to your troops. Then send your units to battle against opposing forces to conquer distant lands and deploy defenses to fortify your territories! Plan your battles based on the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses as you stretch your influence across the world and reap the rewards of an expansive kingdom! With action, strategy and war in one convenient package, Kingdom Royale will have you hooked!”

Taylor says: Gamevil is another developer that we have come to trust to produce quality Android games. Their latest title Kingdom Royale looks like a winner, but some users have reported several issues with the version 1.0 release. You might want to wait on the first update to arrive before investing a lot of time in this game.

Android Games Coming Soon

Gameloft has been teasing Wild Blood for awhile and this week they announced it would hit iOS on September 6th and come to Android sometime later in September. Check out the launch trailer to get a look at the gameplay.

We mentioned this game last week and it looks like it will hit Google Play any hour now. Marvel says the game is coming out September 6th, but we don’t know if it will hit iOS and Android at the same time. Enjoy the new trailer as you wait for the game to arrive.

We don’t have any details other than the name, but Gameloft will release Modern Combat 4 in 2012. DroidGamers spotted a mention of the game in Gameloft’s earnings report and we can’t wait to learn more. Modern Combat is my favorite first person shooter series for Android and Gameloft continues to raise the bar for what we expect from Android games.

We already knew that Rovio had a new game in the works and this week they announced Bad Piggies would launch on September 27th. “There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story?” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.”

Games I’m Currently Playing

Juggernaut Revenge of Sovering: I installed this game a couple weeks ago after writing about it and I finally started playing it this week. I had been spending a lot of time with Eternity Warrior 2, but Juggernaut easily won me over. It features turn-based combat, but there are a lot of actions going on that it feels like a fast paced game. It is free to play and I have advanced pretty far in the game without spending any money yet. This is a great pickup if you enjoy RPG games.

Horn: If you own a Nexus 7, then you must own this game. I just started playing through it and I’m really enjoying the story so far. The graphics are amazing and the voice acting is above par for what we have come to expect on Android. Google Play says only 50-100 people have purchased this game so far, which I’m having a really hard time believing.

I got to say, I am playing Wrestling Revolution on my Galaxy Note and I love it. I paid for it, after trying the free version, and the updates are making each installment better and better.

Considering how long it took WWE to make their own “branded” news and interactive APP for Android, I would say 2145 is the target launch date for the WWE Game.

  • MartinSven

I am playing Modern Combat 3 and N.O.V.A. 3 great games I must say.

  • Alex Belko

I am playing Kairobotica such an addictive game! and dead trigger from time to time

  • kwills88

Neon blitz, is pretty new, but it’s so damn fun…the colors and the arcade style voice over is excellent.

  • uknowme

Been playing Major Mayhem since it came out. I would say it is one of the best Freemium game structures out there. Everything is just a little extra work to get. Nothing crazy like the Glu titles.

  • humidity

I’m pretty excited to see what the Angry Birds sequel “Bad Piggies” will be like!

  • NasLAU

I would play Horn if it worked on my GNex. Stuntcar Challenge was fun though.

  • Himmat

Regarding Horn’s downloads, it is definitely wrong. You can clearly see that 500+ have given their ratings. Btw, don’t hold your breath for Wild Blood. Played it on iPad and it’s pretty bad. Will be much worse on Android with the ‘epic Gameloft lag’ ever present.

  • Steve Nutt

Been waiting for Shogun since they announced it, instant buy (although I wish they’d managed to release it with the iOS version).

Been playing GTA3 recently and really enjoying it (not played it before, although I did play GTA1&2, never got round to 3).

    • Taylor Wimberly

I can always go back and play GTA3 on my tablet. It’s a great time waster to just free play and see how long you can avoid the cops.

  • njcoutinho

Order up to go is a real time passer. Cant wait to play Horn .Just wish i had the Nexus or the Asus tablets .

  • alxrock

I still can’t believe how much I loved playing McPixel. Its as stupid as it is hilarious.

  • Thomas Biard

Sorry, no Blood And Glory for me. I played it for 26 hours at the Snapdragon thing and I think I actually got a small seizure when I read that title again. Horrible flashbacks of swords and blood…and glory…

PS. Not criticizing the game at all. It allows you to get almost 100% through it with no in-game purchases and can keep you busy for quite a while…I recommend it in reasonable amounts.

  • iamXiV92a

Hooray for Juggernaut!! I love the game but I can’t seem to get enough pick locks and scarab beetle things – Anyone else notice the icon change? Look at the play store link and the icon after the download (see what they did there – ha ha!)

I downloaded Bombshells: Hell’s Belles on my Skyrocket last night (must save precious space on the Nexus) – game play is very nice! I wasn’t expecting it to be a tilt-to-control type game, but it was refreshing to see a game that didn’t involve a virtual flight stick – I have a sound glitch after finishing levels though, seems that some machine gun sound permeates from the end of the level up to the beginning of the next then stops once the cut-scene starts. Anyone else encounter this?

  • seven2k

Wow…i still have my $25 from my nexus 7. In all honesty the N7 has made game more on the tab. Good I love this thing! I wasnt the type to buy apps but this n7 changed it for me.

  • BigCiX

Modern Combat 3 doesn’t support Tegra 3 processors. Will Modern Combat 4?

    • Taylor Wimberly

MC3 is available on lots of Tegra 3 devices. Plays great on the Nexus 7. You must have a device that is not supported by Gameloft.

  • crack

nice misleading title to get people to clic on link if you have nothing give abut modern combat 4 then don’t post ….especially in your title

    • Taylor Wimberly

Did you read the post? Gameloft confirmed it is coming in 2012. We didn’t even know anything about it before this week.

  • Jmburks42

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 looks like a great machine I think it beats a iPad do to being half the price. The big is negative about the iPad is it not having the expandable extra SD slot same with the Nexus 7

  • Tarwin

Spectral Souls was originally a PSP game and I personally enjoyed what I’ve played of it (haven’t finished as it’s a loooong game and grinding options are a touch limited).

As for glu…I’ll have to look into them again. I kept on getting pissed off with their “reminders” in my notification area that I had not played that day and they were waiting for me to save the day. Plus I couldn’t get some functions to work despite them supposedly being available to free players… Maybe they’ve improved.

  • Jedediah Sweetser

Major Mayhem is ridiculously fun and easy to get in and out of. Get the sniper rifle ;)

  • Nate

So you don’t know when wwe wrestlfest is coming to android??? It was released on apple back in feb they said it was coming soon but still hasn’t shown up.

  • burdy81
