Google releases Android 4.1.2, rolling out to Nexus 7 today

Today Google announced they were releasing Android 4.1.2 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The release is a minor update to Android 4.1.1 and the release notes say it “improves performance and stability and fixes bugs.” Reports from around the web say that the update is already rolling out to the Nexus 7, and EETimes has confirmed it enables landscape mode on the Nexus 7 home screen. Overall, it doesn’t sound like too much to get excited about, but at least this release brings us one step closer to Android 4.2.

Android engineer Jean-Baptiste Queru also notes that there is a “New [Nexus 7] revision coming indeed with a different power management chip. It’s functionally identical to the existing one, but requires a new driver and bootloader that weren’t part of 4.1.1.” This could be a hint of the $99 Nexus 7 that CNET says is coming by December.

We have yet to receive the update on our Nexus 7, but we will be on the lookout. Let us know if you got the update and if you can spot any other changes that might have been included.

Update: Al Sutton of Funky Android has uploaded a full git log of the changes here.

    • Carl Weathers

Lets hope its not just a rumor!
We need 4.1.2 because of the many bugs that plagued n7

  • nippi1111

    toooo much for a day …..bp 180/100

  • nivekkev

Tried the “check for updates” and it just came back with “Your system is up to date.” Mine was part of the first batch if that has anything to do with how the updates go out…

    • john Hopkins

      Mine says the same thing

      • Sean

I know I’m very late with a reply, but you just have to go to all apps and clear your google services framework reboot and try again.

        • PE

Sean, you’re a lifesaver! That worked for me just now with 4.2. The install aborted because of my modified media_profiles.xml, and for the life of me I couldn’t get it to see the update again.

        • PreachJohn

Than you. Google placed a Notification for System Update on my Nexus 4 . Problem is that I will probably never update to 4.4.3. Notification would not Delete the normal way. No way; so I scoured the Net. You gave me the Key. All Apps/Google Play services/Uncheck Notifications. Done!

Landscape mode on the homescreen? “[D]oesn’t sound like too much to get excited about”? Obviously you and I are two very different people.

  • Nate B.

It’s just getting us ready for the long-term run, 5.0

  • Michael

I sure hope it resolves that maddening loss-of-touch-sensitivity bug.

    • lot

I had that issue, too, resolved it by exchanging my N7 for a new one. :-/

  • Petru-Mugurel Lingurar

You triple checked this with four different sources or…. ?

    [sort _of_a_joke...]

  • Ragnar

Landscape on home screen is way more than enough to get me excited :)
I still don’t get why they never had it in the first place.

Can’t wait to get my update:)

    • Roger L

Really wish you hadn’t announced this!!!!!! i’m now back to clearing data from the “Google Service Framework” every 10 minutes to try to force update!!!! worth it though :-D

  • Vyrlokar

Well, I spent $0.25 on Nova Prime just to get launcher rotation ;) Mind you, it has other awesome features, but it isn’t as buttery smooth as stock launcher. Now I need to move back my changes from Nova to Stock…

  • alexanderharri3

Woo…..well this miiiight make it into my hands eventually…..TF201….but no way on Thunderbolt.

*mild excitement of Android moving forward for next phone*

    • Magestic12

What are you think for next phone? I got a GS 3 but now the note 2 is coming out, I’m thinking of selling my GS 3 & nexus 7 & getting a note 2.

  • smeghead68

I can’t decide if I should get one of these now or wait to see what the christmas lineup is going to look like. ARRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!

  • Noel

I have been using rotate to achieve landscape. Free in the play store…

  • Nathan D.

Still stuck on isc :-( and jelly bean roms are still bit to buggy for me to use as my daily driver.

  • GRAW

I wonder when the Verizon GNex will get this…

    (2 months later) Verizon…?

  • Max.Steel

Hey, Google. How about fixing the loss of sensitivity in the touch screen? It’s almost maddening trying to even navigate or do anything on the screen anymore. And this is a brand new Nexus just a few weeks old. *sigh*.

  • Eric

I’m still waiting for it to show up. Anybody else?

    • AndyB

Yup, waiting. I want it so that I can connect to TLS enterprise WiFi at work! 4.1.1 has issues with certificate-based WiFi authentication in a minority of cases…like in my office.

  • guest

Will the Samsung galaxy nexus get the update or is it just for the nexus 7?

    • Max.Steel

Seems this is just an update for the N7. There might be one in store for the GNex though.

    • steve

Phone has an update too though not exactly the same

  • CRO

    I have CM10 4.1.2 on my GT 9000

  • spazby

did anyone actually get the update?

    • nivekkev

I still have not gotten it

    • AndyB

      Nope, still nothing for me.

    • steve

I got it this am on my phone

  • Nick

Hopefully this also fixes the maddening off-center lock screen clock. Literally the only lock screen that has it properly centered is the connect-the-dots one, and I’m using it just to cool off my OCD.

  • Blip

Just got it – it has downloaded and update now – seem it showed up at 12 noon EDT

  • Lokovious

Just got my notification for update.

  • jd

Good grief. Just flashed back to stock on my GNex…Now has to flash over again….

  • Jay

I performed the 4.1.2 downgrade on my Nexus 7 and now my “voice recognition” no longer works.

  • Yanno

got my update to 4.1.2 today, just noticed main screen is also in landscape, in 4.1.1 only portrait…

  • Joachim

I got the update this way on my Nexus 7 (In Belgium):

    1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All

    2. Find Google Services Framework.

    3. Tap on Force Stop. (might not even be needed)

    4. Select Clear Data.

    5. Head back to the Nexus 7’s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.

It will say the last update was somewhere in 1970. Just scan for the update and you will get 4.1.2

    Build: JZO54K

    Landscape menu is great!

    • AndyB

Hmph, messing with the Google Services Framework didn’t work for me.

  • Murugan

Hey I got the auto update. Landscape mode works well. What I feel is a slightly more buttery experience but it might be just me.

  • Rune Luk

I just got it on my Nexus Galaxy

    • Rodrigo Brasil

      mee too

  • sandcastler

Just installed update. No issues found. Feels faster and more buttery. Not sure if thee sticky touch screen issue has been resolved. Update process on Nexus 7 was the best experience with an Android update.

  • powermoose

Installed the update on my n7 earlier but the home screen doesn’t go into landscape mode, am I missing something obvious?

  • nivekkev

    Wow, still no love…

  • Ginnie

Notification just appeared while I was in the Google Play Store. It installed immediately and yes, landscape mode on the home screen is there! So pleased about that!

  • John

On my nexus 7 how come the screen every time I put in sleep mode or turn it on the screen is a very grayish and very hard to see do u know the solution to this probelm

  • steve

Only thing I noticed is they changed the calendar graphic icon

  • matthew

Does any one else with gnex phone have major low volume issues? So frustrated.. and volume+ app won’t work with jelly bean…Also what @ battery..I keep noticing quick drain if I don’t keep charging all day. I just went out for about 49 minutes & had my GPS on for less than five. I started at 100% & got home with 79%..Between battery & volume, feel like a victim of bait & switch..right when I was getting close to switching to iPhone..like everyone else I know.

    • matthew

Some typos went out for 30 minutes. .not sure how it wrote 49..but 20% drain in half hour with few minutes of GPS sounds poor to me

  • klcow92

only nexus devices get updates on time, a nexus for me next time :D

  • Bob

Got 4.1.2 on my S3 and it corrupted my micro sd. Had to factory reboot the phone and format the card in a pc….
