Verizon unveils the DROID DNA by HTC

The long-awaited DROID DNA by HTC has arrived. At a press event in New York City, Verizon and HTC finally unveiled the HTC DROID DNA in all its glory. While the Nexus 4 and Android 4.2 may be getting a lot of attention today, the DROID DNA’s 1080p 5-inch Super LCD 3 display with an astounding 440ppi is sure to capture a bit of attention of its own.

The HTC DROID DNA will be available starting on Wednesday, Nov. 21 for $199.99 with a two-year contract. Rre-orders start today.

Other specs on the HTC DROID DNA include a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, 2.1MP f/2.0 aperture, and 88-degree ultra-wide angle front-facing camera and 8 megapixel f/2.0 aperture main camera, LTE, NFC and a 2,020 mAh battery. The HTC DROID DNA will launch with Android 4.1.2 and HTC Sense 4+, but we suspect it’ll be one of the first devices in HTC’s portfolio to be updated to Android 4.2.

The design of the HTC DROID DNA is simple and elegant with a curved, black, soft-touch back that tapers to 4mm near the edges. The sides of the phone are accented with red micro-grill sidewalls. The HTC DROID DNA also sports a 2.55v built-in headset amplifier and dedicated rear-speaker amp to enhance the Beats Audio infused sound.

The first full HD 1080p display with the highest pixel density of any smartphone also features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, Verizon Wireless 4G LTE and HTC Sense 4+ with Android Jelly Bean

BELLEVUE, WA – Nov. 13, 2012 – HTC Corporation, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, and Verizon Wireless today announced the exclusive DROID DNA by HTC, the ultimate smartphone and the first with a full HD 1080p display.  The DROID DNA by HTC will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless through pre-order starting today and at retail stores nationwide Wednesday, November 21st.

“It’s no secret that people depend on their smartphones more and more every day which rightfully raises expectations for performance, speed, and design.  The DROID DNA by HTC embodies a smartphone that pushes the envelope in all of these areas with the first true 1080p HD display, latest quad-core processor, and Verizon’s 4G LTE network, all wrapped in a beautifully crafted design,” said Jason Mackenzie, president, HTC Corporation. “The DROID DNA by HTC is sure to top wish lists this holiday season.”

The Ultimate Smartphone
With technology rivaling the latest HD TV’s, the DROID DNA by HTC is the first smartphone to feature a true 1080p HD super LCD 3 display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2 protection.  It boasts an extraordinary 440 pixels per inch (PPI) on a 5-inch screen for unprecedented in-hand HD experiences that delivers the maximum pixel clarity available on a smartphone.

Designed to accentuate the incredible display, the deep black, soft-touch back is understated, with the exception of a metallic red camera bezel, while the red microgrill pattern of the sidewalls hint at the phone’s DROID heritage and the power inside.  The beautifully crafted smartphone feels thinner than other devices of a similar size as the edges of the curved back taper to a mere 4mm for a comfortable feel in the hand or pocket.

The Qualcomm® Snapdragonâ„¢ S4 Pro processor, featuring a quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU and high-performance GPU, paired with America’s largest 4G LTE network from Verizon Wireless and a full 2G of RAM  enable the seamless use of multiple apps simultaneously.  With HTC Sense® 4+ and Androidâ„¢ 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), you get great software experiences including Google Now. HTC Sense 4+ offers a wealth of easy-to-use and customizable features bringing highly sought after personalization to your phone and placing the most important content front and center.  A series of intelligent features powered by HTC Sense 4+ also provides a number of improvements to the camera.

Amazing Camera
The DROID DNA by HTC has a world-class camera that delivers fast image capture, great images even in low-light and an easy interface to capture stills and video. With an 8-megapixel f/2.0 28mm wide-angle lens, 5-level automatic flash, backside illuminated sensor (BSI), and superfast autofocus, you’ll capture amazing moments without the worry of missing a single one. Instead of choosing between photos and video, HTC VideoPicâ„¢ allows you to capture video and still images at the same time. And by simply holding the shutter button, Continuous Shooting takes multiple photos at up to four frames per second to catch all the action.

It also includes a new best-in-class 2.1-megapixel, f/2.0, 88-degree, ultra-wide angle, front-facing camera that allows more to be captured in self-portraits, and up to four people for group shots. Auto Portrait makes it easier to take photos of yourself and your friends with automatic face detection and a countdown timer so you can focus on your pose and not the shutter button.  Capable of capturing 1080p HD video, the front-facing camera also provides a sharper picture during video chat.

Authentic Sound
The DROID DNA by HTC has a unique, 2.55-volt, built-in headset amplifier and dedicated amp for the external rear-speaker to help boost the audio signal to deliver crystal clear sound with less distortion, even at maximum volume. The combination of amplified hardware and the rich, authentic, studio-quality sound of Beats Audioâ„¢ allows music to be heard the way the artist intended, and enhances the sound quality while playing games or watching video.

Additional Features
The DROID DNA by HTC is equipped with a 2,020 mAh battery and power saving software that enables long-lasting endurance.  In addition, the embedded wireless charging makes it easy and convenient to top off power throughout the day or fully charge overnight, simply by setting the phone down.  Finally, with near field communication (NFC), you can use the DROID DNA by HTC to share music and videos, add someone to your social networks, or download apps by tapping other NFC-enabled devices.

The DROID DNA by HTC will be available exclusively from Verizon Wireless through a pre-order starting today, and in-stores nationwide beginning Wednesday, November 21st for $199.99 with a two-year customer agreement.

That looks really nice. To bad it’s on Verizon :(

    • nivekkev

Yeah, I agree, needed to be on all carriers…

      • Hom0ncruse

final nail in the coffin for HTC

      • clocinnorcal

I should have put… “To bad it’s only on Verizon :(” Its great if you have Verizon though :P

    • Vijay

Totally agree. I think HTC is too tiny to have leverage with the carriers. The carriers take advantage of that fact to make HTC provide exclusive phones with extensive customizations.

    • Richard Yarrell

The only thing this phone has over the Galaxy Note 2 is 1080p screen and build quality. Otherwise it’s NO CONTEST the Galaxy Note 2 destroy’s the Htc DNA in software and features hands down. Plus with Verizon you know the useless bloatware of sad Verizon applications. Verizon messes up all devices on it’s network. Piss on Verizon and it’s overrated battery draining LTE network.

      • snowbdr89

Dick your still the ultimate idiot!!

    • jamal adam

HTC needs to stop with this exclusivity crap and bring this to all carriers. A flagship like this deserves a larger spotlight, where more people can see it and buy it. Another thing is, this better be the best 2020mAh battery or else there will be problems.

    • Jimmy_Jo

Pity it’s on Big Red. They cost too much. weigh down phones with bloatware and remove features. And they have horrible support for Android devices. Maybe if they stop releasing so many devices they can focus on making what they have work well

  • pekosROB

For some reason this is more appealing to me today than it was last week and before.

It says 2.1MP f/2.0 aperture. Is that the front camera MP and rear camera aperture or is the rear actually 2.1MP (or the front f/2.0 aperture)?

    • Nick Gray

front is 2.1MP with f/2.0 and 88 degree wide-angle lens. Rear is 8MP with f/2.0 as well.

  • Mikes_phone_and_tab

It stinks it’ll only be on Verizon and not on a carrier that won’t charge the crud out of you for data. Watching HD movies and browsing the web on this thing is what people are going to want to do especially because of the resolution, so if you get this phone you better connect to wifi or it’s over.

  • Paul

Very nice looking phone, BUT, is HTC still releasing phones that record tinny video??? if not then I will look @ HTC again.

  • MyMilan

I might have to get this instead of the galaxy SIII. Depends on if it has Gorilla Glass, SD Card and available for T-Mobile. The screen blows the samsung galaxy SIII out of the water. This has definitely caught my attention. Interested in learning more about it.

  • Steve

UM battery is actually the 2020mah of the J Butterfly, big let down

    • MyMilan

I don’t care about battery size per se. What’s important is how long that battery lasts and its charging system. On the plus side this phone is one of the first phones to support wireless charging, which for me is a very big plus.

      • MyMilan

See my post below regarding how this phone uses the Sharp’s new IGZO display, which gets much better battery life plus many other benefits…

  • free2bejc

HTC will never make the money they need to compete with samsung if they only offer this phone on one network in the US.

This phone had the potential to be awesome, heck, HTC have the potential to be so much better than Samsung. The build quality of HTC products and the UI (if I had to had one imposed I’d rather it be the better looking sense) is brilliant. Whoever signs these exclusive contracts with networks is an idiot. Sort it out HTC.

However, not being American, I hope there’s a European version soon.

  • MyMilan

Just confirmed that this WILL have 16 gigabytes of internal storage, and a microSD card slot for expandable storage. No word about removable battery yet though. It appears to be only for verizon BUT the good news is that once HTC sees how well this sells they should offer a similar device for other carriers. By that time my money may be spent elsewhere though….

    • Vijay

Hi, I don’t see an SD card mentioned anywhere on the order page. Did you call someone at Verizon to confirm? A microSD card slot would be a big benefit.

      • MyMilan

One reviewer said that it HAD a SCcard slot, however I just read another review which said that they left the SDCard slot out, so still unconfirmed until I can download the user manual.

    • Jimmy_Jo

As always…. HTC releases a device as a tester. Once they see what people really want (what’s the point of focus groups) then they’ll release a slightly better one for Sprint. Then the DNA Stereo with 2 rear speakers and the subwoofer for T-Mobile and AT&T. By Sept they’ll be releasing the brand New RNA which has the Snapdragon PRO 2. 3 cores and 1.5GB of RAM but it’s so efficient it gets 27Hrs to a charge. Thumbs down

  • poosh2010

FYI….the press release states that this phone has a 2020 mAh battery (not 2500). That alone is a HUGE blow to what could have been an amazing phone.

  • redraider133

Htc will you never learn? 1080p screen and you stick a 2,020 battery in it? Could have had a real winner on your hands if you upped the battery

  • MyMilan

    From the hands on reviews that I’m reading this for me is a galaxy SIII killer. Goes to show that phones don’t last long in this market. Of course it’s on verizon so that makes it a mute point. Hopefully they will be smart and offer a similar phone on OTHER carriers. Some more specs on this phone;

Thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S III

    Gorilla Glass 2

The camera has a f2.0 lens, full HD video chat, face detection, smile capture, and HDR shooting

Also has a dedicated quick launch camera button

Incredible Super LCD 3 screen, like having Blu-ray on your phone

One of the first phones to support wireless Qi-compatible charging

    • MyMilan

      Regarding the battery, you need to take this into consideration (and NOT just the battery size);

Looks like it will use Sharp’s IGZO display

2.5 times more power efficient when display is static

20% more efficient under heavy load

      Significantly higher translucency

      Much better touch sensitivity (accuracy)

This display leapfrogs anything else out on the market, INCLUDING anything by samsung. Apple was going to use this display for their iPads but Sharp couldn’t bring it to market fast enough. This will be the new ‘go to’ display technology on future devices. Will be in 32″ HDTV next year.

I have the Evo 4g LTE now, I have had it for months. One thing that I have not been able to get used to for so long is power button on top. The DNA looks to be even bigger phone, I can’t understand this insistence of HTC to put it on top, but I am not bying another HTC phone of this size any time soon. It is very uncomfortable, and has actually caused me to drop the phone a few times. If you don’t have huge hands try before you buy. There is no getting used to this. :(

    • Jon

At least it’s centered this time. The HTC Thunderbolt awkwardly placed the power button off to one side–not very ergonomic in most real life situations.

Having an HTC, I fixed this problem myself by downloading a “screen off” app and placing it in the dock. This has worked out wonderfully for me. More convenient than any hardware button I might add.

  • ezpotato

How are none of you super pissed about this 16gb internal storage???? What a huge let down. This was THE phone j was waiting for and then this? Complete BS. I use my phone for music and everything and 13 GB just doesn’t cut it…yes I have unlimited so I can use cloud but not the everywhere I travel has good signal to use Google music. What a let down. Sigh… I’ll stay on my gnex I guess till I either leave vzw or something else comes out. That RAZR Max HD is looking much better now..

    • DROID Sam

I guess people are starting to realize that limited internal storage is the new “in thing” these days. Just look at the craze around the Nexus 4. People around here can’t seem to get enough of it and it has the same 16GB internal storage limit.

  • Salah

Great annoucement for the people in New York.

I hope this one gets into the Netherlands. Could we agree on 2 dissapointments? Battery and the SDcard?

Should I get this one or wait for another one? Scream if you recommend me a another phone.

  • Nick Gray

I think they simply pulled that line from the HTC 8X product page since Verizon’s version of the 8X is the only one with wireless charging. Since the phone will launch in Europe as the DLX, there’s no real need to claim wireless charging as an exclusive feature since Verizon is the only one who will sell the DROID DNA.

  • njfeb jn

    This thing is a beauty

  • alexanderharri3

“will get Jelly Bean”….yeahhh…sure it will…July of NEXT year. JB has been out for months already and bringing a flagship Verizon device….err…well a big Verizon device with an old OS is already recipie for HTC disaster yet again…

    • Nick Gray

The HTC DROID DNA ships with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The latest version, 4.2 (still Jelly Bean) was only just announced last week.

  • h0ruza

    This phone looks spectacular!

HTC’s profit losses have nothing to so with their phones.

It’s their marketing and these exclusive deals with Verizon.

This phone makes the iPhone 5 look like a TV remote and highlights androids strenghts.

Put simply iPhone can not keep up with the tech curve so show the world phones like these and they will buy them.

Release this phone world wide, TV Ad this until our eyes bleed and watch your sales blow up.
