Google and Motorola working on “X Phone” and “X Tablet”

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google and Motorola are working together to produce an “X Phone” and “X Tablet” for 2013 release. The devices are said to be separate from the Droid line of products, which leads us to believe they could be sold under the Nexus brand.

Dennis Woodside, new Motorola Mobility CEO, told the Wall Street Journal that his company is “investing in a team and a technology that will do something quite different than the current approaches.” He admits that Motorola has “fallen under hard times,” but it “now has the support of a shareholder in Google that has resources to do big things.”

Google CEO Larry Page is reported to have told the Motorola team to “think big” and wants them to reach the scale of Samsung Mobile’s business. People familiar with the matter said Page has “promised a significant marketing budget for the unit.”

Details are limited, but Motorola is said to be working on “top-notch features for the phone’s camera and photo software.” Neither Motorola or the Nexus brand has ever been known for great cameras, so this would be an exciting development if true. Motorola is also said to be exploring the use of a “bendable screen and materials such as ceramics”, but they have “run into obstacles associated with manufacturing and supply-chain management.”

A person familiar with Motorola’s plans said they will incorporate new imaging and gesture-recognition features from Viewdle, a company they acquired earlier this year. Viewdle says their computer vision technology “showcases the power of your smartphone through camera-based innovations in augmented reality, device interaction, media management, gaming, and social networking.” Check out the video clip below for a preview of Viewdle’s technology.

We are huge fans of the Nexus brand, so it will be interesting to see what Motorola and Google come up with. Motorola has already demonstrated a focus on improving battery life, and it’s nice to hear that their camera technology will receive some upgrades.

I love my LG Nexus 4, but I can’t wait to get my hands on a Motorola Nexus X next Christmas.

Could be awesome if they do it well :).
But until then I’ll be appreciating my Nexus 4 which I find to be the best phone so far.

    • Zeratoda1

As long as they dont make it a verizon exclusive im sure it will be a huge hit .hell i would get it at full retail as long as thry DELIVAR!

      • mr 1338

yeah Motorola is making sweet devices lately, if only updates would come faster, now that they’re google owned…

      • damambt

Will this be the beginning of a new flagship phone. What does this mean for the Nexus line if so? So many questions.

        • zerosix

Only good news for the Nexus line. I’ve been waiting for a Motorola Nexus since N1.
I just hope the DON’T make the screen bigger. Personally I find 4.3 most comfortable and compact, I hope they don’t make a 5.3″ device.

          • heat361

I don’t think this will be a nexus , but this will be motorola’s flagship it will be on Verizon most likely and be called the droid RAZR X. Its launching in q1

          • zerosix

Q1? Don’t think so, they released RAZR HD just in september.

          • Richard Yarrell

+100…Talk about reaching for the stars. Motorola has always made me laugh they are as weak as Lg and Apple. Bottom line here Samsung is android plain and simple Motorola better bring their A+ game to even compete. With the Galaxy S4 in June and the Galaxy Note 3 in November 2013 what makes moto think they can run with the big dog. Motorola has dull and boring handsets even thou i will give props to the big boy they have the Droid Razr Maxx Hd. Otherwise all this is gonna be is another bloatware filled red accent Verizon crappy device. The Droid line sucks monkey balls and so does Motorola and Verizon. I give myself a +100 for this comment no need to vote…

They should but the MAXX’s battery in it.

        • decker

          I second the motion.

        • masterpfa

I think they will continue along this path of higher capacity batteries

        • Trevor Cameron

If you made a device with MAXX HD battery, a top of the line camera, bundled it with a new 5.0 release, Miracast and added in the Viewindle software??? Are you kidding me? This would be the PERFECT phone!

          Did I miss anything?

          • rex

Except it’s going to cost a fortune – something that Nexus phones aren’t known for.

      • FranzVz

        Yea I agree.

The only way for any company to “come back from the dead” is to have a signature brand on all carriers.

Motorola has never had one, and HTC has never had one.

Samsung Galaxy (the original) had FOUR different names and variations.. Most people didn’t know it was the same phone. Then Samsung said “nope, we’re not playing that game anymore.”

SGS II had the same name and brand across all carriers. This is what Motorola and HTC needs to do as well I think.

        • mrandy128

I agree there are too many variations on names across the seas, and doesn’t help with updates either when you are looking online as your phone can’t be found or you keep finding info on a phone with another name.

Less confusion and one name for one phone would be a great start

        • redraider133

S3 was the same on all carriers, not the s2 which had like 4 different versions on US carriers( s2, skyrocket, tmo version, and sprint version all of which were slightly different versions of the s2)

    • erikiksaz

We just need a fast processor, a properly calibrated screen, and a large battery.

Please deliver! I have faith in Motorola’s hardware, this thing would be awesome if it were unlocked like the nexus 4.

Now only if Nokia would jump ship to the winning team.

    • zerosix

X-tra awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing the G+M device.

    • LukeT32

I loved my OG Droid, son I have faith Moto can make a great vanilla android phone. The droid had amazing developer support too!

      • LukeT32

      • honourbound68

yes. the OG Droid was pretty incredible… and it had soooo much development for it that even when the hardware was old, the devs cooked great roms. One of my friends still uses his as a minecraft server.

        • Eben1277

We still use my wife’s og droid for my daughter to play games on. Dudes are still releasing new ROMs for it. I put a steeldroid on it that was released maybe three months ago?

    • Linda

      could be iPhone and iTablet

    • LilC42

I think under Google’s direction Motorola has started to make some quality devices, looking forward to these supposed devices :)

  • Donnieace

I usually prefer upgrading every other year but I may have to bend my own rules on this one. Lets hope for good things from Motorola & Android.

  • Steve Heinrich

One thing I love about the Nexus line is the variance in manufacturers. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

    • Joel

I agree with your sentiment, but are the little tidbits we’ve read so far enough to start anticipating another nexus?
It seems like by time this “X” device comes out the Nexus 4 will just be popping back in stock.

Personally id like this to be just a new separate device from Motorola, something that sets them apart since they’re owned by Google.

A Nexus would make sense I guess, just seems a bit…untimely (IMO…please don’t throw any rocks!)

      • masterpfa

I could see this being just a Stock Google experience without being a Nexus

  • redraider133

Hopefully it will be on all carriers like the s3. This could be the phone that brings moto back like the original droid did.

    • heat361

I doubt, verizon’s relationship with Google is not that good

      • redraider133

Except this isn’t said to be a nexus so its plenty possible. Plus Verizon and moto have a great relationship you don’t see other carriers in the US getting the love from moto Verizon does.

  • heat361

If this is true my nexus 4 won’t be here too long

  • hokiewv

As an owner of the original Motorola Xoom, I’ve been very disappointed with Motorola’s roadmap with keeping up with Android releases. At this point, I’d only be interested if they come out with a premium tablet with the Nexus brand and a commitment to keep it updated.

    • hokiewv

I have the 4G version of the Xoom. I know that Verizon is part of the update problem which is why I only get unlocked devices now. I love my Galaxy Nexus and never intend to go back to a carrier branded phone.

The lightness of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I got at Google IO a few months after blew it away.

  • spazby

Can’t wait for some more specs but this could be a game changer.

  • jamal adam

This is exciting news/rumors. Talking about Viewdle made me think of Ingress and how it use real world landscape, etc.

  • Angela

The Droid line isn’t Motorola. It belongs to Verizon.

  • Akash Doshi

Sounds incredible :| looking forward to it

  • breckdroid

I’m definitely interested to see what becomes of this partnership. The Nexus brand with Corning and Kevlar, oh and a rock solid battery..Id go for some of that. 2013 is going to be a fun phone year IMO.

  • sylvan

Curious to see how they would use the flexible screen.

    • Jason

They would probably use it mostly for the durability… giving it the ability to flex, even slightly, makes it WAY less likely to crack. It might even make it less likely to scratch, too, though I’m not sure how much less.

      • azswift

I’m still hoping for a roll-up screen that allows for various sizes for different functions.
        -Phone calls, 3″ screen.
        -texting 4″ screen and keyboard
        -watching a movie, 7″ screen

        • romy134

Come on now, that sounds a little to amazing.

          • Raptor

These exact numbers remind me another shrink-expandable device

  • ArticulateFool

    Sounds exciting!

  • Himal Limbu

Ooo…this is huge…i will be waiting on this eagerly.

  • kendartra

If this x phone turns out to be the powerhouse everyone’s hyping about, I look forward to divorcing my. samsung and marrying Nexus!

  • nsnsmj

Oh snap! Can’t wait, assuming this is true. I hope they are able to get it on all carriers, and find a way to demand that they have complete control of the update process.

  • aranea

I and probably a lot of Android fans too have been waiting for something like this. As much as I didn’t like how motorola handled the software upgrades I loved my atrix. Fingerprint scanner was a great innovation making it really easy to unlock a phone with one hand. I’m excited about what novelties will come out this combination of google and motorola.

Totally +1 for the last line “I love my LG Nexus 4, but I can’t wait to get my hands on a Motorola Nexus X next Christmas.”

  • uknowme

OMGOMGOMG! Almost made Project Nut Butter!

    • clocinnorcal

    • Party at Sandy Hook

      Because meandroid phones give diarrhea

  • sunrise

Motorola makes excellent phones. They are very well built, have strong antennas, excellent call quality and as the Razr Maxx has shown…awesome battery life. Throw in stock Android and release it as the next Nexus and you definitely have a winner. Probably will be the best Nexus ever if they did that.

  • BigCiX

As long as it’s not shaped like the RAZR

    • yoaj

and as long as it has one of those moisturizing strips, too.

  • Co1e

I really hope its a nexus phone. Immediate updates have spoiled me.

  • mlynch01

This would be great! I think this will help push innovation in the Android space. A Motorola Nexus would be awesome! I can’t wait.

  • Dan13

I’d always been a little disappointed with the cameras on the Nexus phones. Glad to see they are stepping it up. I can’t wait to see what they do.

  • Slith

This is the Motorola comeback I have been waiting for since Google stepped in. They could knock this out of the park.

  • CTown

Motorola’s main phones is the Droids they sell. These Droids are Verizon exclusive but I never really minded as they are fairly plain compared to what HTC and Samsung release on every carrier. Then, Moto releases several variations in a single year (and they are ALL flagships). I see no purpose to get a Motorola phone as they way they currently are. Their commercials for the phone don’t even make sense. They advertise the “Droid” brand, never the phone itself (except for the Maxx’s big battery). If I were on Verizon I would easily go for the the phones where its own OEM actually bothers to advertises the phone as a “premium device” (such as a consumer goods manufacturer should always do), such as the GSIII or Droid DNA.

So, I am glad that Motorola is working with Google. Working with Google helped out HTC, Sony, Samsung, and LG. Also, since Motorola is actually an American company I want them to do well!

  • RhynosAndroid

Quite awhile ago (well before android was even a glimmer in it’s daddy’s eye (google that is), I promised to never get a moto product again…

This may be the product line that makes me go back on that promise. And in no way am I ashamed to admit that, well, as long as it’s not a fail that is.

  • JarlSX

    best news of the day!

    never had a nexus phone
well, i had the first droid, i guess that was a nexus, too

  • mario_1603

In my opinion I would like to see a motorola nexus :)

  • Zak Lambert

Hahahaha yes. Let the Google take over!

  • Nicko01

This is going to be good.
I can’t wait to see what they’re able to do with augmented reality on a high end phone with a nice camera. Hopefully it’ll also have a powerful GPU for realtime image processing. A good GPU can really help accelerate computer vision.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • kozza3

    neXt neXus?

  • Adryan maldonado

So a nexus device with battery life and build quality of the razr maxx hd? Sign me up

    • breckdroid

      What he said.

  • bstewart11

    Sweet fancy Moses. Can’t wait.

  • LittleGreenDude

I’m still trying to snag a nexus 4 off the Play Store. No luck yet.

  • JD

Glad I haven’t bought Nexus 4, now I definitely won’t do that. Google software support on a Mororola hardware is a perfect phone for me.

  • Orion78

Can’t wait to see what this phone is all about. Hopefully, its better than the Nexus 4 abomination. Yes, get mad.

  • rr2009

The video is very promising. With face unlocking already available Jelly Bean, it will nice to have non-touch gesture recognition. Google can also use this feature in TVs too. Motorola already got good battery life and if they can add nice camera and top notch hardware, it is going to be epic. I can’t wait to hear more details about the project.

  • humidity

I wonder if they’ll launch it earlier than Christmas of next year, especially if they plan on making a tablet after launching the phone. IMO, I think it might launch around the same time as the Galaxy S4. Maybe Summer/Fall 2013? /fingers-crossed

  • redraider133

Well on android central supposedly someone with a “contact” said moto x will have a skin but just be on top of the os for faster updates. If this is true maybe it will pave the way for skins and quicker updates. For some reason it won’t let me post the link to the forums.

  • raichleb

    Next Christmas? Perfect timing!

  • Deeds

I hope this comes out sometime next year, if it does, it will be my next phone

  • Kent Burton

I think that this is the news that all of the people who bought the OG Droid have been looking for. The OG was a beast. The end of the year would be perfect for the upgrade cycle. By that time both of my lines will be off contract. Then this MotoX Nexus can have my money … of contract phone service here I come. I can’t wait.

  • dillonshepherd1991

    You can do it Moto!

  • jibin_raju

i hope it would come to India as well……

  • Monsunami

Creating a Nexus line is a great (obviously highly demanded) investment. Good luck team.

  • Fiasko

    The more Nexi the merrier!

  • Red Wolf

Is that phone going to be for porn user only lol
I am a huge fan of nexus hopefully they will build more solid phone thn nexus :)

  • Danny Calderon

hopefully its priced like the nexus 4 and nexus7

  • alexanderharri3

    This sounds amazing!

  • Patrick Mahoney

Nooo, please don’t use gestures like that… I feel like they will never catch on, like the app Prox it just wasn’t really practical. I WOULD like it though if Motorola made the next Nexus, Motorola phones usually feel pretty solid, plus I had the OG Droid.

  • Samar

    Boy..O..Boy..Excitement thru the air..

  • aarontam

I have upgraditus. It’s not that I don’t want better tech to come out, I just don’t know how not to want it.

  • murali.ram

Definitely this is going to future NEXUS… Since they brought Motorola, will be thinking of promoting the products, as NEXUS is a huge awesome…

  • redraider133

This looks like it will be coming right when its time for me to ditch Verizon for a gsm carrier. Perfect timing it seems!

    • yoaj

      thinking solavei….. hm

      • redraider133

I may go with one of AT&T, they have a little better coverage in my area compared to TMo

  • spidremann

Being a Sprint user forever, I’ve never had any experience with Motorola build quality…etc. What’s the opinion of the peanut gallery?

    • Eben1277

Build quality is second to none. Only phones tougher are ruggedized devices.

  • ndub21

Yes!!! This sounds awesome! I would love to see Motorola come out with some awesome new phones. They need to make a comeback and no better time to do it than when Google owns you. Go Moto!

  • lou2cool88

This sounds awesome! Hope it has the same battery as the Maxx and a better camera.

  • rpras

KLP next summer followed by Moto nexus in the fall? I hope this goes to the Play store without the drama that was the Nexus 4 release. Give me an LTE capable neXus and I will say goodbye to contacts forever.

That said, I also want to have a look at an HTC Nexus next year.

  • KingCrow02

Bro is going to love this

  • Shazam

Motorola neXus with a 3x optical zoom, 14 mp camera, 5 mp ff camera, 4 gb ram, 64 GB built in memory, Quad core +, 1080p display, 5.3″ display, with a stylus and palm os – direct sync programs… stereo speakers

those are the sugar plums dancing through my head….

  • nivekkev

Really want to learn more about this one, nice to have something totally new and innovative to bust out of the gate….

  • Louis A

Every since Google bought Motorola, I have been waiting for when they will work together on a project. Whether or not it turns out to be a great device, which I am hoping it does, I think Google is secretly testing waters as both hardware and software company. I also think if turns out really good, Apple is going to have alooooot to fear and worry. Good luck guys and break barriers!

  • donger

    Nexus V? Motorola Nexus X?

    • Viakenny

      “Nexus phone (2013)”?

  • Eric Wilborn

    I’m down. Let’s see it!

  • Anjie Cai

I’m looking forward to the big batteries motorola is starting to put in their phones :D

  • fingers26

I think if this true I will change my Note 2 to this Motorola… X phone..
The video looks very nice..!! I;ll love to have a phone like this…!!!! I hope it has a big screen…

  • Oskar Wismierski

Hope they don’t wait too long to relase this beast!

  • mabroid

Not a massive fan of moto
    Prove me wrong

  • arminla

Just in time for the end of my contract hopefully!!

  • piyushb

  • n25philly

Hopefully a Nexus device with some actual storage. It doesn’t have to be a SD card slot, but if I can’t get at least 64 gigs of storage on it I’m not buying. I’m not going to forced onto the cloud.

  • Daniel Hakimi

Maybe this is their way out of that Nexus 4/5/6/7 pitfall?

  • frmorrison

This sounds great, Moto needs a chance to make a Nexus device.

  • VS

Bendable display or able to capture the features of Tony Stark’s phone in Iron Man 2…that’s what I’d call revolutionary instead of evolutionary =).

  • renn9420

It will be interesting to see what Moto can do once put to the challenge and has funds to play with. Can’t wait to see it. Still a HTC fan though.

  • elijahblake

I hope that all future Moto phones comes with Stock Android, and if they actually do come with a flexible (unbreakable) screen that would be EPIC

  • gp126904

He is how to make it awesome and a huge success:
    1. Unlock the bootloader
    2. Give it a removable battery
    3. Said battery should be as big as the Razr HD Maxx battery
    4. Make said battery removable
    5. Expandable storage or at least 32 gb on board.
    6. Available on all carriers
    7. Quad core cpu
    8. Vanilla android
    9. A great camera

  • V6ser

“I love my LG Nexus 4, but I can’t wait to get my hands on a Motorola Nexus X next Christmas.”

    Why so late? :)

I’m going to get it as soon as it’s released :D

  • Angie Wimberly

    I’m an X, you’re an X, everybody X!

  • celo175

Exciting New wonder what going to come out of it. Hopefully something Amazeballs!!!!!

  • jonstle

Thinking this will be motorolla’s chance to make something special. I hope they can think outside the box and come up with something unexpected. Kind of like the iPhone when it first came out.

  • SageF

I’ve always been a Motorola fan because of their great radios. If they think outside of the black square or “diamondish” utilitarian design they could make something that will appeal to the masses and still be a kick ass product. If they are focusing on cameras and photo software they have a LONG way to go. The would need to pull off something better than what HTC did with their camera on the One X but not so far as what Nokia did with that 42 Mega Pixel monstrosity.

  • orangestrat

I hope this is really happening, I need a nexus X!

  • piyush159

Viewdle seems very Cool. Motorola and Google might just make the best Nexus device so far. Actually I’m very excited to see the working of the world’s first bendable screen smartphone. Let’s see who gets that first, Samsung or Google-Motorola.

  • jenskristian

I would absolutely love to see Motorola turn into the exclusive Nexus OEM. They would absolutely get me as their loyal customers!

  • Ilyse Rose

These sound like they would be really great additions to the Nexus family. Can’t wait to see what happens

  • WlfHart

But if these were Nexus line, wouldn’t they get stock Android and not add whatever extra features Motorola wants to tack on to the software? Or is that software an extension of the app (Viewdle)?and thus anyone with Android could get it. I’d be excited if manufacturer extra features were just add-ons that any Android user could grab.

  • Laurel laurel25

This could be so cool! I would love to see a Nexus device with Motorola build quality and radios!

  • Adam Jones

When…not if…when this comes out I am all over it. Full price if I have too. This will be thenfirst born for a couple that belongs together. Google-rola is a great pair. Their work will be amazing!

  • raovallab

a bit late to the party ?

  • luis maldonado

Omg im so excited for this!!! This will be the perfext phone to upgrade from the galaxy nexus cant wait for more info!!!

  • JonJJon

If there is one phone manufacturer I want to go back to it is Motorola, and I really want this X phone to be real………it will be mine……… precious!!!!!!

    • JonJJon

      Aww a minus 1? Someone doesn’t like Motorola a lot of doesn’t get the Hobbit/LOTR joke :’(

  • alexandre.ladeira

Google needs to force Motorola to unlock the device they made… I have a defy, and its a great phone, but I don’t know if I will ever by a smartphone from Moto anymore

  • unwiredmedic

I’m honestly surprised that they haven’t done anything like this before. How can you be a major software and O/S company that buys a huge manufacturing company with a very well known name and not make a partnership like this? I know they don’t want to tick off the other brand manufacturers, but that doesn’t mean they can’t compete fairly in the market.

    • redraider133

Probably because they just bought moto last year and these things take time to design and come up with a phone.

  • Jorge Vieira

I would be blown away if they also could match the price of the LG nexus that would be EPIC. But I would also love to see it on verzion obviously verizon abd Motorola has a tight relationship. I would lobe the name “Google Nexus X”

  • aufan1

I’ve had bad experiences with Moto phones too. I wouldn’t consider this tablet.

  • Rahul Verma

I am happy to see Google coming up with a device manufactured by their subsidiary. :)

  • Nathan D.

I would love to see this next Christmas, I wonder what it will look like when everything is said and done.

  • da9el

that sounds interesting. together they can accomplish great things! go ahead guys, you can do this! =)

  • masterpfa

It’s difficult to imagine in what direction Google and Motorola are going with this.
Motorola need a top end device, but other manufacturers need assurances that Google will not favour Motorola.

Difficult task, but not a Nexus device in my opinion, but an awesome potential game changer?

    I think so

  • MJM128

I want impressive battery life, top tier tech, and an OPEN device! Google don’t fail me!

  • piyushb

    sweet mother of god

  • Viequense

I can’t wait to see the design.

  • Jeremy Sheehan

I’m all about this. I never claimed hardware loyalty until I found that I kept on migrating back to Motorola phones. Probably b/c I’m with big red and any of the good phones are Motorola phones. I’m just sick of Verizon wanting locked boot loaders on everything. Pisses me off.

  • Stephanie87

Too late, i already bought the iPhone 5. They say its the most successful and sophisticated phone.
    I love it.
I cant wait for the next iPhone, but for now, i bought myself a nice iPad mini for christmas :X

    • luis maldonado

good job buying the ipad mini when the ipad mini with retina display is most likely coming soon -__-, why do you trolls even stalk the android blogs!? oh yeah cause we’re better and you need to feel better about having an inferior product by a company that is starting to lose its grip now that its fearful leader *dictator* is gone.

  • Eben1277

I haven’t seen the comment yet, so here goes…

Final nail in the coffin for Motorola.

Just kidding. I actually love my droid x and still use it for some stuff even though the gnex is my daily driver. I’d probably still be on it if my wife and I hadn’t been so hot to leave big red. I love moto’s build quality, so I’m hoping this is a nexus. Otherwise at the very least I’d like to see it released across all 4. I’d pay full retail on this and make it paying 30$ a month on T-Mobile.

    • luis maldonado

final nail in the coffin for apple! lol

  • luis maldonado

i really hope to see, a tegra 3 quad core processor, 13mp camera, vanilla android, microsd, 32gb internal memory, a seriously futuristic or reliable hardware design (less plastick), strong battery, loud speaker, very minimal screen bezel or no bezel design with a 1080p screen! i’d pay top dollar for that!

    • redraider133

Tegra 3? If anything Tegra 4. Tegra 3 is already falling behind why put a processor that is old if they really want this to be a flagship?

  • Eben1277

Just watched the viewdle video. Looks pretty sweet, but they better be careful or the could end up getting hit by Microsoft over kinect related patents.

  • gregdv

Looks cool but I still want to see a competitively priced tablet

  • securifirm

When I read the topic…the first thing that came to my mind was the etrade baby…its my shocked fast :)

  • ninjandroid

Ship my nexus 4 already goddarnit
Hopefully Moto will be better prepared than LG was

  • robd1893

I don’t think any phone or tablet associated with Google will be on Verizon or Sprint ever again. With the let down that was the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon because Verizon took their time on the updates, it never really was a Google phone. I think they learn that and that is why the N4 is GSM/HSPA+ only. Even though this X Phone will be Motorola, since it will have Google’s name linked to it, I think once again, it will be GSM/HSPA+ only.

I would be surprised if Google wanted to ever again deal with CDMA tech again.

  • overclockthesun

Well, as long as it has 64GB onboard memory, Expandable memory, Huge a$$ battery that won’t bloat and go downhill like my current motorola battery ina years time, has an “Unlocked Bootloader” unlike my Defy, and complete Google control over updates…. then yes sign me up baby!!!!!1

  • logrish

WOW!!!… thats like the best news i have had in a very long time :) Way to go guys :)

  • Jwan

Even with prestige Android software as well as hardware stacks, lack of expandable SD card slot + non-removable battery is pretty much a devastating failure for Nexus lines. If this coming device is one of the Nexus flagship devices.

    • tanman888

I do wonder how important an expandable memory slot is to the general public of non-tech users. Maybe the manufacturers go out and survey random people and come to the conclusion, a sd slot is not a necessity.

One alternative train of thought why some devices that omit an expandable memory slot don’t sell well is non-tech users have the tendency to ask Android savvy users (ie. those in know) which phone they would recommend. If we recommendation phones we’d prefer, it would be to models of our preference (more than likely ones with an SD card slot).

  • nobile

Go Nexus Go! I love my Nexus 7, it is the best 7″ tablet on the market!

  • scubabum

Motorola produces some duds lately. Hopefully this push by Google will bring it to the front again.
On Google side: be careful else you ruin a good reputation.

  • nippi1111

  • digvijaya07

This Is totally awesome ..!! :))

  • bear831

This could be good, but Google will have to very careful about how they market the phone so as to not anger other manufactures. I personally have had enough issues with Motorola hardware to be hesitant to purchase this product but it has great potential.

    • tanman888

It’s possibly something that all other (Android based) phone manufacturers have been fearing, though from a business point of view it was probably inevitable once Google bought into Motorola. If the child company isn’t performing well, the parent could possibly step in to steer them in the right direction or sell off the company.

Motorola is still striving to get back to its retail glory days (the RAZR phone). This “X” project might be the boost they needed.

  • myandroid99

    cant wait for this beast

  • A.Woodbury

It would be an addition to the Play Store. Motorola needs a big move like this so hoping for the best

  • Alexander drzfr3shboialex

    And I’m sure waiting on a nexus 4 :(

  • Gordon Wheeler

I would love to see them bring out a premium nexus device (with a must have great camera) and keep pricing similar to the Nexus 4. Just make sure if there is a case and or special charger that they are available…

  • AndroidBoy

Unbelievable…, after reading this I am already looking forward to Christmas 2013!

  • StEVO_M

I’ve been waiting for this. I hate to say it, but I just may jump from my HTC phones. Now Google just needs their own Carrier (Buy Sprint) and then world would be complete :)

  • tanman888

Gah! Only paid WSJ subscribers can access the full article.

It is interesting these financial reporters/analyst live breathe and eat these companies (in this case it’s Google). If this shows up on their radar it will definitely a big strategic shift to the business.

  • m22

love my Nexus4. it this is the next device in the Nexus line I eagerly await it’s arrival.

  • acuda27

As long as they give me the Nexus Experience with the RAZR MAXX battery I will love it, and it shall be mine!

  • techvudu

It’s about time. Google has yet to tap into their “own” resources. I’m glad they used Asus and Samsung in the past years, love the products but excited about the return of Moto devices. Between update issues and lackluster Droid line on Verizon it’s been a rough ride for them.

  • jimtravis

Would welcome a Motorola Nexus. Still use a Xoom WiFi daily even though I have newer tablets. With Jelly Bean, Xoom is still a nice tablet, and very smooth / fluid.

  • papisnacks

Still waiting for the gaming phone, with a joystick instead of on screen controls. Will be interesting to see what moto/Google can come up with.

    • Eben1277

That will be the xperia nexus in 2014

  • dacatalyst41

The battery capacity Motorola brings has become one of its greatest assets. The scaled back MotoBlur has become so close to stock it’s actually a plus as well. Now I just hope Motorla decides to ACTUALLY innovate in the camera department. Heard the camera would be great on past phones and I got sheer disappointment. It’s not a deal breaker, but now it’s all about competitive edge. Hopefully, we see some improvement this go round.

  • Boding

    Too much branding

  • Shawn Clark

Is this really goes through…i just hope the updates rollout accordingly….but i also wonder if the “X” brand is a branch off of the “Nexus” brand.

  • GRAW

    Can’t wait for the “X” phones. :D

  • xxTigerShark

Can’t wait to see what this (hopefully) amazing phone looks like, functions like, and what Android Version.

  • azswift

Augmented reality Android OS. Requires Google Glass. Little flags will appear over everyone’s head so you can finally appear to know everyone at the company Christmas party.

  • Oscar Ortega

would be cool , now let see how its designed and performed!

  • RRR

    • dacatalyst41

      Well Said!

  • Deon Davis

    Wow this would so sweet!

  • HaX

Hope we something innovative in 2013!

  • avijaunty

This device will sure rock but google needs to work on device supply..
    i m still waiting for nexus 4 :(

  • smwinn7

Can not wait to see what these will look like

  • pjmccartney

Does that make this the first non-Nexus stock experience?

    • redraider133

The original droid was stock android and wasn’t a nexus

  • KingCrow02

This is what my bro has been waiting for.

  • logrish

WSJ??? i hope this turns out to be true… moto cameras could really do with some research into improving its capabilities. And yes coming from google i hope they come out with faster updates.

  • anish67

wait n watch should b good

  • ankushsurana

When they start proper manufacturing other will just see only these device will rock…

  • dacatalyst41

I wanna see specs on the camera lens.

  • ThatBrownGuy

I was wondering when we’d see some sort of hardware collaboration between these two! Hopefully Google put in enough effort into the whole business of selling it properly this time, we don’t want another Nexus 4 launch debacle again.

  • sbala

Its going to be battery beast for sure.

  • Balaram Vineeth Venugopal .P

Am i the only one who thinks that it could be the next nexus device?

    • Balaram Vineeth Venugopal .P

insert to my above post: running key lime pie

  • troysyx

If Google and Motorola make a Nexus X phone for next year, i will definitely be buying one. Especially if they keep the same pricing structure as the Nexus 4. prices like that make me feel ok if i buy a new phone every year :)

    • klcow92

I hope they actually make an awesome device, considering Google has full control of Motorola, I do hope they go crazy with design add some out of this world innovations into the devices too :D

  • hulkish

Very interesting… I’m sort of confused by google’s inconsistent nexus product release timings. I also hope they can find the best manufacturer and stick with them….

  • RoG3

That would be freaking awesome. About time we get vanilla Android w/Moto hardware.

  • RoG3

Hope it’s avail on all carriers

  • benteers3

Hope they come under a reasonable price range.

  • pcgk33

i only hope Nexus 4 will restock soon. CES is on the way.

  • mmsr5

Motorola makes good hardware. I’m hoping with the “x phone,” they fix the camera. I had the Bionic, great phone, but terrible camera.

  • Ezy03

This is going to be sweet!!

  • ganesh_bhatt

I had Moto Rocker 2 years back after 2.5 years usage and i love that.

Now days peoples don’t have trust on Motorola but l know still they have capacity. After acquiring by Google they have good chance to do something never before.

If they want to develop like never before i have some inputs which i think they have to consider.

1- Screen Size Should 4.7 to 5 Inch (Easy to use by one hand)
2- Display – Full HD Super LCD
3- Processor – Tegra 4 the latest of or S4 with Qual Core or
4- RAM – Minimum 1GB but latest high end mobile has 2GB.
5- Internal Memory – At least 16GB to 32 GB
6-ULP GeForce (Best Graphic Experience in Gaming)
7- Camera :- Minimum 8 Mpx Full HD – 13 Mpx (better then Note II or One X+ Camera) and front 1.9mpx HD
    8- Battery:- 2500 MAH
    9- Slim like Iphone 5
10- Own utility apps like samsung S Voice,Smart Stay eyes etc, LG like live video zooming..
11- OS Updated and easy future updates which is most important thing.

If they will make like this then no buddy can stop this device.

I want to Say all the best to Google and Motorola…:)

  • g1user

    I cannot wait for Moto!!

  • castlefox

I would be surprised if Google and Motorola were not coming together to make a X phone.

  • Adinaky

I had a Motorola Defy for one year (now I have an SGS2) and it was pretty good,
but maybe because I rooted it and I overclocked the CPU. Anyway I hope they will release the new devices as soon as possible, I really want to see the specs.

  • mrstache

This is awesome news. Excited to hear more. I recently switched to a carrier phone from owning a Samsung nexus. I’ve been regretting it ever since. Can’t wait.

  • maney

This device could be awesome but Google needs to solve their supply issues which they experienced with the nexus 4.

  • notaphandroid

I want to see it first, hopefully it isn’t like the Motorola Atrix or the Motorola Xoom (both were pretty bad devices)

  • Lukas

I still haven’t got my nexus 10 32gb and google haven’t managed to keep up with stuck and now they are already about new products. Dafuq assholess?^.^

  • aykutb

Why even, it’s not like Google is paying manufacturers to build a new nexus for them, they’re just picking one. Google is nowhere in manufacturing business, hope they don’t screw up.

  • amit

my motorala android set fallen adams lock what i can do now
