Single day sale: Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9 gets a $50 price cut

With only fourteen more shopping days until Christmas, Amazon wants to make sure that the new Kindle Fire HD will be a part of your holiday celebrations. For today only, Amazon is offering a $50 discount on the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, bringing the total price of the 16GB model down to $249. If 16GB of storage isn’t enough for you, you can always grab the 32GB model for $319. To take advantage of today’s sale price, you will need to enter the promo code¬†FIREHD89¬†during checkout.

We know that the Kindle Fire line isn’t as appealing as Google’s Nexus 7 or Nexus 10, but if you’ve bought into the Amazon way and want to enjoy your Amazon digital content in the most intuitive way, the Kindle Fire is the only way to go.

Oh how I wish they made this same deal for the 7″ model. I’d really like the 7″ HD model to replace my old 2nd gen Kindle. The 8.9″ seems like it would be too heavy for a reading device.

    • epps720

I actually just got a free 7″ Kindle Fire HD. I switched from Directv to Cablevision and Cablevision has a promo where you get a free tablet. Not a big fan of the interface and the advertisements on the lock screen are annoying.

I already have a Transformer Infinity so didn’t really need this but it goes great w/the Amazon Prime membership I have. Free movies and books, plus it gets my wife away from my tablet.

      • epps720

BTW this is legit not some stupid advertisement

Kindle Firesale. iPad doesnt need that, its selling extremely well. My whole family gets iPads and iPad minis for christmas.

      • honourbound68

good for you.. now go back to tuaw and stop trolling here lol

  • eioous

Wow, if i dont win me a tablet from the giveaway ;-) I might have to go with wone of these

  • Snowman81

    That’s a pretty good deal…but I don’t think I’d jump on it.

  • SnipesYan

This would be a great deal if its operating system wasn’t put through a chop shop first.

  • bstewart11

Good deal, if you’re into that kind of thing. I love Amazon and have an addiction to seeing their boxes on my doorstep, but I don’t like their limitations on the OS. I love the integration with Amazon products and the Freetime and the Prime benefits, but if only their app store didn’t stink or they allowed for the play market then it would be a real winner. I understand why they do it the way they do it though.

    • ConfuciusTse

      You said everything I’m thinking.

  • sctrait

For that price, still not worth it.

  • renn9420

    Great tablet nice price.

  • uknowme

Not for me. Mom is getting one for Christmas though.

  • jbcooley

I like Amazon’s e-ink devices, but I’m not a big fan of their tablets. For past devices, software updates stop when they release a newer device. For e-ink readers, that hasn’t bothered me so much. But for a tablet, software updates should last much longer. If a tablet doesn’t get software updates for 2 years, it’s not for me – free tablets excluded :)

  • nicotinemind

They don’t ship Kindle Fire HD to Finland yet,not that I would have been intrested.Would have liked to get the Paperwhite for my dad as a christmas present, but had to go with the “bland” Kindle 4:(

  • ndub21

Not a bad deal, but I would personally go with a Nexus 7 over the Kindle Fire. I will say however, that I got my grandparents some original Kindle Fires when they went on sale on Cyber Monday. I think the Kindles are somewhat easier to figure out, but the Nexus 7 gives you so much more hardware and options.

    • DroidPower

true, it definitely depends on who’s using them. Nexus 7 is definitely more versatile.

  • sunrise

Nice sale, but I think the Nexus is a better deal. However, I’m sure those who love all things Amazon will love the device!

  • tanman888

There’s so much more competition in the market up against the kindle fire range one year on. I do wonder if the $50 off makes it that more appealing for the general public…

  • smwinn7

not a bad deal, if you’ve bought into amazon

  • Nicko01

These tablets really aren’t that bad if you use a lot of Amazon’s services. That’s primarily why Amazon created them.
It’s always nice to have options.

  • dbcher

Nice deal on a nice tablet.
Just wish Amazon didn’t cripple the OS so much

  • Moises Rivera

I would rather just get a Nexus 7, it’s around the same price, and I can have stock android. Make it my own.

  • eckischeich

Nice deal, but Kindle Fire remains Kindle Fire ;)

  • acuda27

    Kindle 16GB < Nexus 7 32GB

  • RRR

i thought it dropped TO $50 which is its real cost and price, not BY $50 !

Last Saturday Frys was selling Sony 46″ LED 240Hz 3D LCD TV for the price if this useless toy, THAT was a deal. If i am not mistaken (lazy to lose my time for anything Amazon) this junk is not even HD version, i.e. it has resolution of standard, not even high-end, cellphone

    • Nick Gray

You are incorrect sir. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 features a 1920×1200 resolution display.

    • steven

Not true…I just got a damn good software update for my research before you speak….plus…the HD screen just cripples the nexus 7.

  • KRS_Won

I’m still thinking it would be better to get a Nexus 7 or 10 for my parents…
You can still get Amazon/ Kindle content through the Amazon apps, correct?

    • jonstle

KRS_Won — Last time I checked you could not watch amazon videos on an android phone or tablet with an app, only with the web browser via flash. There are apps for books and Music that work on android tablets.

    • KRS_Won

How was a question down voted?

  • jonstle

I use amazon for most things anyway, could be worth a deeper look.

  • rr2009

    Great deal!

  • dcortright

    Let the price wars begin!

  • Puck69

Really prefere nexus 7 even with 50$ off.

    • steven

Tried the nexus first…couldn’t return it quick enough..MUCH better screen on either HD, 7 or 8.9….

  • Froojr

I have some friends with Kindle Fires. I’m more into general tab use, not really needing an e-reader. Nice specs for a color e-reader, though!

  • mightynaf

I wish the Kindle Fire would get a price cut in the UK. I love the hardware and design, but its hard justifying one when the Nexus 7 is low price with access to the Play Store.

  • Jorge Eslava

If they offer the same deal on the 7″ version I’m sold.

  • kelltrash14

So…this makes this exactly half the price my mother paid for the iPad for no reason. I tried to sell her on this instead. Ah well.

      no reason????

      iPad smokes your $hitty bumtablet.
You cant compare a cheap trash tablet with an iPad.

  • KingCrow02

Tempting but I have to pass

  • MC_Android

    haha yeah right.

  • Rahul Verma

Sadly they don’t sell in India. :(

  • vary

When will India get deals & gizmos ?

  • merlintw

If i had the cash i would get my parents one.

  • Nwemo

I’d rather try my luck in the daily competitions and win a nice little tablet! I hope my plan works!

  • ArticulateFool

If only the Nexus 7 had a $50 off fire sale.

  • Steve Heinrich

I’m not a fan of Amazon’s Android experience but this will be major incentive for people who aren’t as concerned with customization. These are definitely for a broader audience.

  • Danny Calderon

That should be e the regular price

  • honourbound68

so tempting especially with the new amazon kid’s subscription.. trying to convince the gf to buy one (while i buy the gn7 of course hehehe)

  • Motospark

    Its a Keeper :)

  • alexanderharri3

It’s so hard to recommend a Kindle considering you’re locked to Amazon’s ecosystem of “androidish”. I’ve had my fair share of problems with the amazon appstore in the past. The Nook is similar, but they make sure everyone still knows about their e-ink tablets.

  • ConfuciusTse

Wish Amazon would just work with vanilla Android. Why have to sell a hardware loss leader when they could dominate the whole Android media ecosystem by being device agnostic? Google’s Play store just doesn’t have the selection that Amazon has. They could coexist so easily by both focusing on deriving revenues from what they both, separately, do best.

  • Andrea Miller

No thanks. I bought an ipad mini instead and could not be happier. Its incredible.

  • imdiane

Great single day sale!!! Although I feel the Nexus 7 is better in terms of the Android user experience.

  • jonneves

Meanwhile in Brazil, amazon just got here with a R$ 300,00 (U$150,00) simple kindle, and it’s already a big hit!

  • avijaunty

    Nexus 7 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • humidity

  • chaitanyapramod

Fails to understand why someone would choose this over Nexus 7 available for same price and providing arguably better value…

  • galaxynexus

    Nexus 7 all day

  • androgue

    Tempting indeed!!

  • rahul81437

    i want this , !!!

  • nobile

    Pretty good deal :)

  • bgssilva

hey Kindle, come on with me and get a Fire in my HD life!

  • misael

Hahahahh whats next for all those tablets trying to grab a piece of the cake. Clearly apple is winning so far, but thanks to the nexus 7 we will see some fight and hopefully the competition between tablets will decrease the price of the tablets.

  • radaan

    missed it.. Damn

  • melan26

Oooh, this would have been nice.

  • sachin_goral

Coupon would have been good. Anyways Missed it
