Rumor: Motorola X Phone to pack Maxx battery life and a Sony camera

We’ve gotta slap a rumor tag on this one, but I’d say that everything Phone Arena’s tipster dropped on them belongs in the massively probable category.

Motorola has been delivering solid hardware for at least a year now with the software (well and camera) being our main points of contention with them. Our biggest hope for the Google acquisition was that we would finally see Motorola return to vanilla Android while maintaining their hardware chops. It’s taken a bit longer than we hoped, but the latest round of rumors certainly appears to confirm that the X Phone will be that device.

Perhaps the least surprising piece of information is that the X Phone will have a battery capacity rivaling that of the MAXX line. This has been a huge advantage for Motorola with battery life being a feature that any user can understand and appreciate. Only the Note II comes within screaming distance of the MAXX line for battery life and that is of course at the cost of a 5.5-inch frame that simply doesn’t fit for all users.

Next on the rumor hit list is a Sony camera sensor, which regardless of the megapixels would be a huge step up from the aforementioned disappointing camera performance across the entire Motorola line. Sony’s Android devices may not be flying off the shelves, who knows maybe the Xperia Z will turn that around, but their Exmor camera sensors are perhaps the best available on the market.

This tipster pegged the phone at 4.8-inches which is just a minor bump up from the existing RAZR line and a logical enough size if they are looking for a one device fits all solution. Also in the unsurprising category is the inclusion of kevlar in the construction which has been a highly touted feature in several Motorola handsets and matches with Google’s insistence that your phone “shouldn’t go splat” when you drop it.

Rounding out the specs list are an unidentified quad-core processor, a microSD slot and up to 128GB of internal storage (wait, what?!).

Again nothing (other than that internal storage figure) is remotely shocking here, which in this case I’m not actually finding disappointing. We’ve been mostly pleased with Motorola’s hardware direction so just update those internals and don’t bother slathering anything on top of that Key Lime Pie and the Motorla X Phone should be a serious contender this summer.

Now Motorola just needs to lock up that product manager to make sure this thing is ready for a Google I/O unveil in May and a roll out to call carriers shortly thereafter.

I hope these are true and they can keep the price point of $300-350 like other rumors said. Looking to be a great device.

    • Jeremy Sheehan

if they could keep the price at that point, I wouldn’t have to lose my unlimited data plan at Verizon. That would make me VERY happy.

It’s so bad, because I know these are all rumors at this point, but I can’t help myself from getting REALLY excited about this phone.

      • Joe

If you have unlimited, and you want to keep your plan visit diamond Wireless in a local mall. They will keep your unlimited and get you the upgrade price.

    • heat361

Yeah if its that price then I really can’t wait for I/O this year!!

    • randyw

It may be $350 in the play store. But the Carrier models will be $500+. Just like with the Nexus 4, $500 at T-Mobile.

  • R.S

Though I’m sure there are some out there that would love 128gb of internal storage, I’d prefer a little less (to make the phone cheaper) with the ability to add my own.

    • Emagehtmai

As long as the phone has the ability to install appears to the SD card (without rooting), I agree. One of the things I like about the Galaxy line is its expandable memory, but that usefulness is limited since you can’t install apps on the SD card (without rooting it).

      • Cwalden21

you dont have to be rooted to move apps to sd

    • LukeT32

I highly doubt the internal storage will come anywhere close to that….. Look what Google did with the Nexus 4, 16gb.

If it does come with 128gb it won’t be in the $350 range.

  • Nate B.

This makes me laugh. But what if I’m proven wrong… It won’t be funny then.

  • kingap

please please please let this microSD card rumor be true…

  • Sid

My dream Specs for the X-Phone :

4.8″-5.0″ 1080p Screen Edge to Edge Display
    Exynos Octa Processor
    2GB RAM
    32/64/128 Gigs Internal Storage
    3000 mah+ battery life

    Stock Android

    • honourbound68

where do i sign up for your dreamphone?

    • Luis E. Cornejo

Please include a Power VR Series 6 GPU and you will be happy.

    • Raptor

By the way, 4.8-5″ edge to edge is what all previous gen 4 – 4.3″ phones, even Galaxy S1, have if measure them edge to edge

    • trolls daily

Highly doubt that it will be stock android, or the 8 core.

      Likely specs are:

      4.7-5.0 1080p screen
Either snapdragon 600 or 800 processor. (If Samsung cant get the overheating issues worked out with their octa, no way can Motorola who has zero stake in the company)
SD card with 16,32,64 GB options
      3300 math battery
      Kevlar everywhere.
Shoved in a black frame. Because its Google.

  • madsalad

HTC M7 is looking less and less likely to be my next phone and the X is looking a lot more likely. Gotta replace this Sensation soon. Hope all these rumors come to fruition.

  • Balthazar B

Yes, but nobody’s mentioning the most important question of all: what radios are installed in this thing?

  • Vance

This could be the first device besides the nexus 4 to give me pause about making the M7 my next phone (sorry Samsung faithful, to each their own).. I’m so excited for 2013!

  • TheDave

Definitely keeping an eye on this one. 128 GB i don’t see happening, but everything else has me hoping for a real winning device.

  • surethom

4.8″ screen Max Battery & Sony Camera, this is Defo my next phone & maybe Key Lime Pie, PLEASE quickly in the UK.

  • jamal adam

This phone is looking more and more enticing with each passing day.

  • nandy

one please, the nerd dream come true

  • Morphuex

I want to see either pure android experience or a newly revamped motoblur that Google had a part in.

    • trolls daily

You very likely will get your wish with the motoblur,i highly doubt it will be pure, motoblur was already pretty light on the M. If this stays the X phone and not a nexus device…motoblur will be on there in on form or the other.

  • CTown

It’s great news that Google and Motorola are working together since the Nexus 4 reviews said it was very easy to swipe the sides of the screen while the band around the center made the phone easier to hold; while the Razor HD was awkward to hold (but at least had great build quality):

  • gothicdude

Great Battery, Best Camera in the market and Key Lime Pie. Near pure google experience. Wow. I hope it will be worth the wait. I always wished the Razr Maxx HD had a better screen and a better camera. Now it’s just a matter of few months.

  • da9el

i love to read ab out the x phone

  • Engels Hernandez

Nice post! I always reed your page. If the Xphone will be the first smartphone with key lime pie i’m pretty sure to buy one. hehe

I you want to read articules of android in spanish (also in english with the google translate plugin) visit my blog page.

by the way, i’m from Venezuela. See ya!

  • redballs

It could be edge to edge screen:)
if these rumors true, I’ve to sell my note 2, sorry samsung

    • Richard Yarrell

Oh BULL SPIT on Motorola faking and fronting for attention. Samsung owns this space and nobody will take that spot not even Motorola folks. Who gets rid of a Note 2 for this. I will be purchasing the Galaxy Note 3 plain and simple. Samsung will never be upstaged by Motorola you can bank on that.

      • Squiddy20

Omg Richard! There are so many things wrong with what you just said. Let me list them all and again make myself look like a total jackass…..

      • squiddy20

        1. Given that all we have to go on is rumors and speculation about this phone, who are you to say that it won’t stack up against, if not surpass the Note 2, something that is *literally* last year’s tech?
        2. “Who gets rid of a Note 2 for this.” Obviously, that guy just might. Can’t you read?
        3. “Samsung will never be upstaged by Motorola you can bank on that.” …And a little over a year ago, you claimed how no one would “upstage” HTC, not even “Samsuck”. Now you’re saying the reverse -_- Stupid fanboy

      • jay

You should really be embarrassed with yourself.

  • nikhilverma

who the hell is downvoting me time and again.

    • nikhilverma

      ah ! Now I know , everyone.

  • donger

    Yes more X-phone info.

  • Android Sensei

So far everything that I predicted seems to be coming true. This phone may take over as “the next big thing.” – http://goo.gl/f011p

  • beneyc

    This could be incredible.

  • Tico4674

This may be the device that weans me off of samsung products.

  • ChrisLH

I’m pretty damn excited about this phone – I’ve always liked the Motorola hardware. Maxx battery life would be the most important thing for me besides stock (or nearly stock) Android – I’ve gotten tired of charging my Galaxy Nexus throughout the day just so it doesn’t die on me.

I would really like to see GoogleRola really push the envelope with this phone and force the other manufacturers to step up their games. The focus is always seems to be on the lightest, thinnest, biggest screen. IMO, we’ve reached a point of diminishing returns on those physical factors, maybe now there can be a new emphasis on battery life,

  • co.ag.2005

Sounds good. Now let’s see this go from rumor to actuality!

  • MC_Android

Damn… It’s a bad market when a phone could get me this excited but all the manufacturers have made their flagshipwith some sort of crutch like a crap battery, camera, lack of storage or awful software overlay.
If these rumors are true I don’t care if it’s over $400 or 500. My skepticism is that Google is going to push for no microsd and 124 gb internal is a stretch. Fingers crossed though!

    • Richard Yarrell

      Moto is phoney

      • Squiddy20

Oh Richard, I just can’t hide my feelings any more. I’ve loved you since your first post. If only there was some way we could be together.

      • MC_Android

Richard, why does everyone downvote you? lol Is this some kind of on-going joke throughout all the android sites? From the looks of it, you’re just expressing your opinion… :/

        • squiddy20

Except his “opinion” is usually stated as fact, and if anyone disagrees with it, you’re immediately called “useless”, a “bum”, a “troll”, a Verizon fanboy, or any other childish insults that make absolutely no sense.

  • Nathan D.

phone just keeps getting better and better.

  • breckdroid

I know these are just rumors, but sometimes rumors become truth. I was on the fence with the M7, SIV, and this the X. However I am definitely beginning to be swayed in favor of Motoroogle Phone. Fingers crossed that things come to fruition. Either way we are all in for a good year of awesome devices. Pick your poison.
