Google Watch could launch by end of summer

Financial Times reports that Google’s Android team is working on a smartwatch. The report says the device would act as a companion to your smartphone, but there are not many details provided outside of that. Apple and Samsung are both working on smartwatches to be released later this year, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that Google is doing the same.

Last week buried in our Motorola X Phone report was the revelation that Google Watch was well into development. That tip came from a trusted source and it’s looking like the information was accurate, so we wanted to add some additional details. Our source says that Google Watch could launch by the “end of summer” and it would feature tight integration with the rumored X Phone.

A Google patent application from 2011 described a smartwatch with a dual-screened “flip-up display”, “tactile user interface,” and onboard camera. All or none of those features could be included in the final design.

Other than that, we will have to wait and see what Google has in store. If their smartwatch is going to launch this summer, then it could debut at the upcoming Google IO conference in May. We are huge fans of smartwatches, so it will be interesting to see how Google improves the concept.

What features would you like to see on your smartwatch? Voice input? Heart rate monitor? Color display? Let us know in the comments below.

Hah the picture is not the Google Watch. It’s just a regular old watch that Google sells in their online store.

      • kinderdm

It may not be the watch in the rumor but he is right though. The watch pictured is pretty ugly, in my opinion anyway. Doesn’t make me think of google design at all.

Christ you are a dumb fuck

    • (sic)

Dislikes for the word “ugly”? Look at that pic, really you people love that basic model, even it’s from Google or comes with Android 5.0? Are you f’n kidding me??

  • Iria

Glasses, watch.. how far are we from the smart bra with 2x 4″ super amoled HD screens?

    • Pat

Smart bra? I would not mind seeing someone to use it

  • Nathan D.

As long as it is a colored display of some kind I don’t care what the resolution is, since it going to be small display to begin with that even a vga screen might look good on it.

Voice interaction would be cool. And Heart Rate if it could would be great. I cannot do the heart rate from the chest. So it would be good perk. Other watches include pedometer, blue tooth compatible to trasmit data via Google App?? who know’s what else we could come up with. :-)

Color display and vibration are the two main things I want.

    1. Battery life of >= 1 week.
    2. “Offline” mode / doesn’t have to be constantly connected to phone.
    3. Microphone.
    4. Panic button.

The only way a smart watch will work is if the battery lasts at least 2 weeks, who wants to charge the phone weekly.

    • cthonctic

I honestly haven’t had a problem charging the Pebble every 5 to 7 days so far, honestly. Not a big deal.

  • Mr

Waterproof or atleast waterresistent is a must

  • masterpfa

    Is the final design?

I want one, especially as it will get all the updates first.
Will the crown be a multi-function crown, will it have wind up battery backup.

Sure AAM you could have got a better photo?

  • JoAnn Brereton

God, I hope the watch pictures isn’t it. That’s uglier and cheaper than the watches you can get for free at any trade show.

  • GentlemanScholar

I like the idea. A watch is a style accessory so the watch should have regular numbers in the dial and be offered in a variety of colors. (Okay Google colors) It must also provide functionality, features like voice recorder, camera, headphone jack to stream music from Google play, sync capability, and tell accurate time are important.

The only thing that lacks with stuff that has a smart tag is battery life. #wonder if that will ever be upgraded# *sigh*

  • taz88ny

I just want text notifications and caller ID (with a decline option), since I almost never hear or feel my phone ringing. Things like a camera and microphone would be cool, but I just want something simple for now.

    • Bubba Smith

      Its called a Pebble.

  • duffguy123

I was thinking maybe Google Now support. For example, the watch notifies me of a text, hit reply “I’m on my way”….Sent a message without even taking the phone out.

  • aranea

First of all please make it round like many other watches. Water resistance will be a pluss.

Either a color screen with watch hands or an e-ink screen will be great. It just has to show notifications. Simple canned answers to texts or emails. Definitely, google Now!

  • McLovin

It needs to be able to function autonomously without the phone. If I’m gonna go jogging I don’t want to lug the phone along too.

  • KRS_Won

MOTOACTV 2… Google please make this happen.

that photo.. one word.. fugly :(

Pardon the self-promotion, but an Android watch will be the perfect platform for the stylish “Color Clock” app that I developed. It’s based on the 1970′s Chromachron design and is also great for lock screens and docking station apps. You can find it here:

Instead of buying accessories like band or heart monitor, if smartwatch can take care of that, it will be great. Hopefully, Google will pay attention to the design.

I think it would be very cool if the smart watch could give you navigation directions without a display. I think that if they included a headphone jack it could be one of the most effective GPS systems for motorcycles. I have found Google Navigation’s Turn-by-turn directions are descriptive enough to be understood without a display.

Another idea I just came up with, They have recently developed projection keyboards. I would love it if it projected out a little keyboard i could type on with my other hand. Make it happen.
