Samsung sells 69.4 million smartphones in Q1, sees $6.4 billion record profits

Prepare to be shocked. Samsung has released its earnings report for the first quarter of 2013, revealing that the company managed to remain profitable. OK, that may be a bit of an understatement; Q1 was the best quarter on record for Samsung. Net income for the quarter skyrocketed to $6.4 billion, a staggering 42 percent increase over Q1 2012. During the quarter, Samsung’s smartphone sales jumped 56 percent to 69.4 million units, eclipsing Apple’s 37.4 million iPhone sales during the same time period.

If it’s not already clear, Samsung is the most dominant force in consumer electronics – a position which will be solidified in the second quarter of this year with the global launch of the Samsung Galaxy S 4. While we’d like to think that HTC, LG, Sony or even Motorola have a fighting chance, Samsung’s success in the smartphone space will not be matched for quite some time.

What’s your take on Samsung, its profits and its Android lineup? Will its rise to stardom backfire as consumers become aware of Samsung’s monolithic presence in the marketplace?

That’s a hell of a number 69m,and more shockingly 30m more than apple.

yeah, but Apple is more profitable. Apple is the king of profits, Scamsung is the king of betrayal. Buy Apple, buy american.

Bottom line here Samsung has well deserved it’s standing on the android platform these last 2years. They have delivered device after device with industry leading software solutions and feature implementations the best on any hanset. Apple can only wish they had any relevance in tech game today. Apple is extremely useless, boring and dull pretty much a sad conclusion. Like it or not people better realize Samsung will not only increase it’s hold in market share from 40% in 2012 to almost 50% in 2013. I expect 75million S4′s to be sold in 2013 and 25million Galaxy Note 3′s. Fall back Samsung haters they rule this market.

        Why buy American? I’m English!

I have nothing against America or their products, but you sir are a dick!

Well that’s lie, I don’t like Apple. And your great American phone, gets drawn in USA and made in Asia. The same as almost all phones.

      • ugh

Apple products are made in sweatshops in China. Buy American???

I have nothing significant to add, just occurred to me that I’m Korean and haven’t owned a Samsung product for 12+ years.

I’m Korean and I own two Samsung TVs, the wife and I have a Note 2 and S3 respectively, and… that’s about it for Samsung devices.

Maybe one day I’ll have an oven that talks to my fridge that talks to my washer/dryer that talks to my TV that talks to my phone to let me know the cookies are done.

That TV in the photo looks soo nice!

I like Samsung and their mobile devices and envelope pushing software (when it works properly!), having said that I would probably be inclined to go with the HTC One this year if I were in the market for a new phone. HTC really made a beautiful device this year and despite the lack of removable storage or battery I would rather have the One.

Is that profit number for all of Samsung or just it’s mobile phone division??

Samsung is a huge company. They make everything from industrial equipment to appliances to mobile phones.

    • Boris

I think Samsung Electronics. Mobile sales compose 70% of the total sales.

That’s a lot of cheap plastic.

But, a lot of innovative, forward thinking, best OS platform [Android], in the world!

I sold my smartphone at http://www.smartphonecashin.com – was a bit reluctant at first because they offer more money than anyone else, but the process was easy and hassle free
