Samsung Galaxy Zoom unveiled with 16MP imaging sensor, 10x optical zoom

GALAXY S4 zoom (8)

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is finally official. The Android 4.2 smartphone/camera hybrid delivers mid-range smartphone functionality wrapped in hardware that promises to deliver a great imaging experience. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD slot (up to 64GB), 2,330 mAh battery and a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) display. But, the 10x optical zoom and 16 megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor with optical image stabilizer (OIS) and Xenon flash are really what make the Galaxy Zoom unique. The device is able to capture 4 frames per second in continuous shooting mode, and ISO can be manually bumped up to 3200. The Samsung Galaxy S4 camera features like Drama, Eraser, Sound & Shot, Beauty Face and Best Photo have been carried over to the Galaxy Zoom along with Story Album, Trip Advisor and Paper Artist.

Though the original Samsung Galaxy Camera wasn’t really a phone, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is intended to fully replace your smartphone. The 15.4 mm thickness of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom may be more than what we’re used to these days, but it’s still a bit thinner than the 17.1 mm HTC G1 from a few years back. Samsung has not announced pricing or a release date for the Galaxy S4 Zoom, but we suspect the mid-range processor and low resolution display will allow service providers in the US to sell the phone for around $200 with a new contract. Be sure to check out the press release below for more details.

“The Samsung GALAXY S4 zoom represents yet another step forward in the way Samsung is working to enhance the lives of our customers around the world,” said JK Shin, President and CEO, Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “As communication continues to become increasingly visual in nature, people wish to capture and share their moments in the highest quality possible, but often do not have the space or inclination to carry a dedicated camera for this purpose. The GALAXY S4 zoom changes this forever, combining the industry leading functionality and connectivity of the GALAXY S4 with the high quality photographic experience you’d expect from a compact camera. The result is truly the best of both worlds, without compromise.”

For easy camera navigation, the Zoom Ring can be used to activate the Quick Launch andShortcut features, giving you instant access to multiple camera modes including Auto, Gallery and Smart Mode with a simple twist.

Photo Suggest instantly connects you to huge libraries of images taken by fellow photographers, to help you find and compose your best shots anywhere in the world. Photo Suggest can even direct you to the ideal nearby location which will give you the vantage point you need for that perfect photo.
The GALAXY S4 zoom also features Samsung’s popular Smart Mode, so you can stop worrying about settings and start taking professional-quality artistic shots. Simply choose from a series of pre-set modes and the camera will automatically adjust to ensure you capture the best photo possible. Use Drama Shot to merge continuous shots of moving objects into a single composed image, or Action Freeze to instantly capture high-speed action. If you aren’t sure which Smart Mode to select, the Smart Mode Suggest feature can assess the scene for you and provide a short list of the best options for your consideration based on surrounding factors such as light levels, focal length, or face detection, ensuring you always get the best shot you want.
Unlimited entertainment in the palm of your hand
The GALAXY S4 zoom’s heritage is evident throughout, from its sleek and stylish design to the powerful, yet intuitive user interface. Running on Android Jelly Bean 4.2, the GALAXY S4 zoom boasts many of the same features as the recently launched GALAXY S4, includingTouchwiz, which lets you fully customize various aspects of your device including the lock screen and notification bar, for a truly personal mobile experience.

The problem the first gen had was price, if your into photography so so much your willing to drop this much cash on a camera, you would get an entry level DSLR.

This time round could be different, as it could be subsidised.

It doesn’t matter how good your phone camera is, come sports day, school play or football game, an optical zoom is needed, I think this device has legs, but it only makes sense subsidised, other wise it’s a bad choice.

Thanks for the link. We’ve embedded it into the article.

Well….they went and skimped on the processor…and the internal storage …. why?

  • Name *

Im not interested. They better hurry up with Galaxy S5

  • mattcoz

Megapixels schmegapixels, how big is the sensor?

    • Matthew

  • Kilgore Trout

    16mp and only 16gb?

This should have a starting internal storage of at least 32GB!!

    Looks nice though….

    • Kilgore Trout

      Sorry, I meant,”16mp and only 8gb?”

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

It’s Samsung. They go for the lowest common denominator. The Galaxy S4 Zoom is technically a Galaxy S4 mini with a better camera sensor and a massive lens.

Personally, I don’t see the 8GB of storage as an issue. If you’re buying this phone, you will want a lot more than 16 or even 32GB of storage. Get a 64GB microSD card and call it a day.

      • SGB101

8gb is too small, OK for the camera as photos go on the SD,that much is baked into us now,but for a phone its a squeeze.

Saying that tho this will have apps 2 SD like the sgs4 so its doable

      • Eli

S4 mini? More like a S3 mini. A dual core? Zoom ring is stupid. Who wants to be grabbing the front of their camera when taking video to zoom in and out. I see a lot of videos with fingers covering the shots.

  • R.S

    8gb internal memory?!

If it weren’t for that, I’d have no problem suggesting this phone camera to my mother who as a grandmother currently carries a smart phone and small digital camera.

    • SGB101

Remember they are rolling out apps2sd on the sgs4.

      • SGB101

How do I get down voted for a fact? And Apps2sd actually gives the smaller sgs4 and it’s derivatives extra user value.

I can’t wait to see the amazing picture from this phone cropped down and posted on Instagram.

  • donger

    Wow, looks alright.

What I want to know is, is this finally going to be the Android that takes better pictures than the iPhone!?

Also, this reminds me so much of my dearly missed Sony w810i that I am seriously considering getting this in lieu of the faster, sharper, bigger (HD and size) S4. Sighhhhhhh…I really wish I didn’t have to sacrifice one feature for another.

    • Eli

My S3 already takes better pictures then iPhones. Or at least iPhone users. Jeez people stand still when taking pictures, and use ‘touch to focus’

  • Mate
  • jonstle

This could be the answer to my frustrations. My S3 takes good pictures but when I want “printable” pics of the kids I have to go find my real camera. When looking at the optical zoom and sensor size I think this could handle most situations better than the other phones out there.

I only have one remaining thought and that is “Will it fit in my pocket?”
