More details leak about Moto X, including customizations

The Moto X is quickly becoming the most hyped device of the year, and a new leak just adds more information to the rumor mill. These rumors have been floating around for a while, and we’ve confirmed many of them before, but it’s good to hear them from a few sources.

The newest info reveals the degree of customization that will be available on the Moto X. You will be able to customize the color of at least two external parts. There will be the back panel and the trim, which can be individually colored, matched or mismatched. There will also be the option of engraving the device with your own message or name. And strangely, you’ll be able to upload a personal photo and have it be used as the device’s wallpaper. This is something you can do yourself, so it’s strange that they would offer it.

The above image shows three of the colors to be available, out of the sixteen to be offered. That’s a pretty impressive set of colors. This is only for the back cover, so we’ll see how they will handle the front of the device. Black front with colored trim and back sounds fantastic to me.

The device will also come with a large array of sensors we previously mentioned. Opening the camera app will be as simple as flicking the phone, instead of having to find the icon. It’ll also have voice recognition that will be listening for commands, making the device easier to use. And of course, it’ll know when you’re driving or walking and react accordingly, like turning on the speaker phone when you’re in the car.

Other small tidbits include the device running Android 4.2.2, which has been known for a while and expected from a Google company, and shipping customized devices within days of the purchase. The devices will also be available in stores, which of course means buying it without customization.

With all these confirmations and official statements, the Moto X is quickly coming together. With a release date of “soon” from Motorola, we don’t know when we will see it, but I personally can’t wait to get my Android and Me green Moto X to play with. Are you getting more excited for this device?

The software customizations go well beyond the wallpaper. Think of it as an enhanced version of HTC Get Started – http://www.htc.com/www/getstarted/

Is this plastic back? I hope some better material (Kevlar) will be available too..

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Original rumors said there would be multiple choices for out casing material. Most of the old rumors have been proven true, so we will have to wait and see.

      • uzunoff

I was hoping that the customization will go beyond the skins and case materials and colors.
I was secretly hoping for processor and screen customization. Oh well, I guess w shouldn’t expect an high end device.

I hate to say it, but the physical design of the phone seems somewhat bland – at least, the backplates seem bland. The leaked pics of the front seemed plain as well. I guess I’m spoiled by the look of the HTC One and Butterfly s, both of which are very pretty in any color combo. I was hoping that the leaked pics of the Moto X weren’t of a final design, but it doesn’t look hopeful.

Just pics? I thought the whole phone has been leaked though videos. Is this not a hands on video of the Moto X in some language that I am not familar with?:

      • mattcoz

That Motorola logo on the front really kills the design.

      • Steve

Where’d you fin this video at? I thought Moto/Google removed this video from everywhere America.

People come up with the most over hyped and unreal expectations. Words get lost in translation and seem to have different meaning other than what the word means itself. They are looking to be different and sale off a unique feature of “customizing” your phone. Of course those options will be fixed of what they already have. No company is simply gonna have top notch specs and you choose the “pefect” phone. If that was the case they would simply make one phone and launch it. But I think Moto has bigger plans than this later down the line. People are gonna be disappointed but only in themselves for thinking they might be able to pick the battery size, screen res, material, etc. That’s just silly.

    • vforvortex

Agreed. They are hiring only 2000 workers in the fort worth, texas plant to assemble the phones that will be sold in the US of A. China and Brazil will make the phones for international sales. So you are not going to get hand stitched leather as your back panel. :D I think the main draw of the phone will be the price point and capabilities of the sensors. customizability, i am guessing, will be an added price which is where they hope to make some extra money to make up for the low price point in the phone.

“Opening the camera app will be as simple as flicking the phone, instead of having to find the icon. ”

lol, as if finding the camera icon is so hard and not as simple. I would rather have to press the icon instead of shaking it.

    • vforvortex

when i read “flicking the phone” i imagine the same action as a kid, you would flick someones ear from the back.

    • mattcoz

It’s already ridiculously simple to get to the camera from the lock screen, so I don’t think this is necessary.

      • raichleb

You’re right, of course, this feature is not necessary. But I look at it as another evolutionary step in making a device that knows what I want to do, when I want to do it. How many things that we take for granted today were unnecessary 5 years ago?

  • allie489

I hope you can customize to get rid of those sensors, I know for me that it’d be quite annoying for the phone to launch the speaker phone when you answer in a car, what if you’re not even the one driving or if you’re on a bus or a train… get real there’s got to be a way to either turn it off or not have it at all. It’s a way to spy on everything you do with all of these sensors.

    • vforvortex

I am sure it will be in the settings menu where you can switch off the ones you dont need. Samsung has the same options on all their smart stay, scroll, pause etc.

  • redraider133

I will be excited to see what they unveil, because most of the time the hype train blows things way out of proportion and only leads to disappointment

  • jerrbomb

I’m not excited about the phone its self.. But the over all aspect of it all.. And how far Motorola along with the influence of Google can go.. The phone in terms of specs might not be high end.. But that’s not their goal.. It might be beautiful.. But their are options in how you want it to look.. I mean.. You can complain.. This is just the start.. One phone in what I’m sure will be a part of a great line up for Motorola.. So let’s continue to cheer them on AAM..

  • ayocuz

I’ll just judge it when it comes out but for the price I surely would trade in the manufactures skin put on top Android as far as specs goes as long as they can give at least 80 percent of what Samsung or HTC is giving I’ll stay Motorola from here on out it almost feels like the manufactors are becoming too gimmicky with their software so I’ll just take vanilla and stabilityand save about 2 to 3 hundred dollars on my next cell phone

  • rashad360

One of Android’s biggest strengths is its customization, I’m glad to see this phone is fully embracing that! I am very interested with what I have seen so far.

If the Moto x is not supposed to be next Nexus, why does it have a nexus typical earpiece? Or is it just me?

    • mattcoz

It’s a slit, what’s so special about it? It’s similar to the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, but not the Nexus One or Nexus 4.

  • Dan

An event will be held by Google for the Moto X on July 10th according to Leo Laporte from “This Week in Google.” see 40:20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=szhHI_XWN1Y

    • mattcoz

Will people think I’m dull if I just go with all black? Heh.

      • vforvortex

I think i would prefer black too. more sleek looking and hides scratches well.

  • diordna

I wish Motorola all the best but I have a feeling this is going to be a bust like the Homer Car on the Simpsons.

  • Afif Mulla

Maybe i’m looking too in detail but in the image they posted about the customisation the picture at the bottom shows a man jumping as an X and a woman as an I, together XI, 11th July?

    • http://www.technogasms.com Sean Riley

You might be reading too much into it, but there’s a small press event with Motorola on July 10th so something public happening on the 11th would make sense.

I got a chance to play with this phone a few weeks ago. It’s not going to live up to anybody’s expectations because they’re too unreal. I can say that it is a wonderful phone and that I think it will shatter the notions that bigger screen + more cores = better. It’s going to be SMARTER. As far as “flicking” the phone for the camera, all you do is quickly turn the phone over twice (so the screen faces the ground) and the camera fires up. This will be nice if you’re already doing something on your phone and you want to take a picture – you don’t have to back out and then find the camera app. It also has an improved camera sensor (10mp camera) and a very nice slo-mo video option.

As far as release date, has anybody noticed in the Moto ad with the 2 people jumping off the dock, guy on the left has his hands and feet spread out in the shape of an “X” while the girl on the right is shaped like a ‘I”? “X-I” could easily be “10-1″ or October 1st…
