WSJ: Google to promote Moto X with $500 million marketing campaign – device heading to all major US carriers this fall

While we’re still waiting for the official Motorola Moto X unveiling, it’s nearly impossible to go 24 hours without a new rumor of leak hitting the internet. According to the Wall Street Journal, “people familiar with the matter” claim that Google is willing to let Motorola shell out upward of $500 million to promote the Moto X in North America and Europe when the device hits the market this fall. These sources also claim the massive marketing push was enough to convince all four major US service providers to add the Moto X to their smartphone lineups. Google’s influence over the development of the Moto X was also pivotal in reducing the number of carrier bloatware apps which will be pre-installed on the device.

The WSJ piece confirms the Moto X engraving and case customization options which would allow users control over the look of the back panel and trim. No details are given regarding the handset’s specifications, but quite a few sources seem to agree that most components from the Moto X will be on par with those of the Nexus 4 with the exception of a handful of low-power processors and sensors which will allow “contextual awareness” at all times.

Personally, I have not been too invested in all the Moto X hype over the past few months. If you simply look at the rumored specs, the Moto X falls flat when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One. But every story seems to ignite a small spark of interest. My hope is that Google and Motorola are still holding a few cards which will make the Moto X the “must-have” smartphone of the fall.

    With that kind of money, it clearly shows that Moto is serious and wants a huge chunk of the pie that Samsung and Apple currently own. Moto flexing it’s new found benjamins. Can’t wait to see the Moto X released.

    What will the campaign be? Cardboard signs, hand-written with black magic markers? Dollar Store streamers? Motorola must really be tightening up the old belt with only $500 to spend on a major smartphone launch…

    I don’t see this phone making a big impact on the global smartphone shares. I’m still sceptical about the rumoured low price point of ~$300-400 for an unlocked high-end phone, especially if it is to be manufactured in the USA. Also, the “local-manufacturing” tag really only is relevant for the US market, and it is not on every American consumer’s priority list (more like an added bonus). For the rest of the world, it couldn’t matter if it was manufactured in the USA or in Asia; the golden priority is pricing.

    Lastly, if Motorola gets the phone on all carriers, that would be great, but the rumours indicate that at least in Canada, Rogers will own exclusive rights to selling the phone. If that is any indication, I am weary to think that this will not be the case in other markets.

    If Moto can get the price right and they make it available for customers to purchase easily via carriers or through OEM, then I can see this changing the smartphone leaderboard. However, I just see too many challenges – at least from a global perspective – to see this making a big dent in any market outside of the States.

    On a side-note, just from personal observation, I have never seen or known anyone owning a Motorola smartphone in Canada. The last time I saw a Moto phone outside of android sites was the Motorola Razr (flip), I don’t know if that is the case in the EU, and other places but you would be ignorant to think brand recognition and loyalty doesn’t work against Motorola right now – again, outside of USA.

    I am hoping this phone accomplishes one of the key goals which is of creating a faster adoption of smartphones all over the world by driving down the costs of an unlocked device and putting pressure on competitors and status quo. secondly i hope there is more innovative features besides the spec wars. and finally , longer battery life / more efficient battery consumption.

    I feel like the price will be high because they sell it on carriers and who would buy it with a contract for $199 if they could get it without contract for $299 or maybe less. Carriers ruin everything.

      I wouldn’t be surprised if they did price it super low and have it be free on carriers, though I imagine some of the backplate materials will be “premium” and cost more.

    For some reason I’m afraid this mid-range Moto X will replace the Nexus as the low cost device from Google. Leaving the high end to the Google Edition phones. Nothing factual. Just a suspicion.

      I have the same feeling and even worse, a tiny feeling the nexus being phased out alltogether if this gets extremely big….. Hopefully not.

    $500 million is more than Samsung or Apple spent all last year promoting their phones. Should make Moto X a household name before long.

    $500 million…..they could just give out like, 800,000+ phones as the promotion through various contests and such and that would create quite the buzz for word of mouth.

    It’s almost like when companies spend hundreds of thousands on advertising that if you buy item X they will donate 5 cents to charity Y…just donate the hundreds of thousands you spent on advertising and you’d probably end up with a bigger donation amount.

    All I know is, if you are on Verizon, and don’t want a bloated Android experience, this phone is pretty much your only choice in the coming future. And, if you are lucky enough to still be having unlimited data, intend to keep the plan, want a new flagship with strong manufacturer support, but don’t want to shell out over $500 for your next phone, this phone is probably also your only choice.

    I rather see marketing push a $400 LTE Nexus with Android 5.0,souped up really unique features, great speakers, and a high quality camera!!!

    I just bought a RAZR i here in the UK (RAZR m in US?) for £150 (half normal price.) For the price, it is superb, with a lot more attention to detail than devices from Samsung, Apple and LG – Motorola Smart Actions for example, not to mention the excellent display and built quality.

    So, if the RAZR i is what an ageing mid range device designed prior to Google’s influence is like, then I think we can expect some great things from Moto later this year.
