Test out AirCast: stream gallery, cloud storage to Chromecast

Google Chromecast

Every time we’ve talked about apps that expand the functionality of the Chromecast dongle, we say that the app is not publicly released. Google has kept a tight reign on the Chromecast SDK, and apps would have needed to be whitelisted to be used by the public. Koush was tired of waiting, so he decided to reverse engineer all the Chromecast protocols. He has recreated the AirCast app without using the SDK whatsoever.

Now, you can download a test version of the AirCast app. It will allow you to stream local gallery, Dropbox or Google Drive content to your Chromecast dongle. You can control the media using notification controls or controls in the app itself. It’s that easy, and that’s why AirCast is awesome: It’s simple.

However, keep in mind that it is a test version. There can and will be bugs. A major bug is that some devices don’t show the AirCast button in the gallery. One of the devices affected is the HTC One, so keep that in mind. Since it is a test version, it will stop working after two days. By that time, Koush will have probably released another version with less bugs.

If you’re feeling adventurous, hit the source link to download the app and start playing with it! It’ll make your Chromecast a lot more useful, and you can help with bug reporting for Koush. And don’t forget to tell us what you think of the app and how it works!

No bugs for me. It just doesn’t work at all. Using CyanogenMod 10.1 on HP Touchpad and I have tried last 3 nightlies. Dropbox movie is found. Push play, nothing happens until FC. Duplicated dozens of times. With Gallary, nothing happens. Under the share icon, AllCast isn’t even listed as an option, so there is no way to try AllCast. Have no movies on Google Drive so I didn’t try that.

But doesn’t work on HP Touchpad, which isn’t surprising since it is such a unique and customized animal at this point.

There’s your problem, your trying to use a touchpad… Did you try it on any other device? It worked on both of my devices and a tablet.

Is there even a new easier way to use them for anything other than the intended apps.if not, I don’t want this

I love all these apps that are being made to take advantage of chromecast. Hopefully once developers are actually allowed to make apps that take advantage of it it will get even better. Great device for the price.

No AirCast button on the S4, either. previous version or this version #2.

    Wonder if it’s just me.

    • yankeesusa

Could be but just like the issues on the HTC one the s4 may have similar issues. Just report it to the developer so he can work on it.

Does the device have to be rooted to use this app?

app has alot of bugs far it’s only working on my Kindle which is 4.0.3 ICS…it times out but so far ist the only droid that works with this app in my household..

does not work at all on my GS3 with 4.1.2 not even with my 20 or 30 second movies ive shot with my phone, so I’m not trying to pump 1080p huge files thru wi-fi..

    I eagerly await revisions
