Sprint’s Galaxy S 4 to begin receiving KitKat update today

Remember yesterday when we reported that Samsung had posted the source code for the Sprint Galaxy S 4′s KitKat update? And we suggested that that indicated that the actual rollout may not be far off? Well I’ve got some good news, friends: We were right.

Sprint today announced that the Android 4.4.2 update for its version of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will begin rolling out today, Feb. 13. The update bumps the Sprint GS4 up to software version L720VPUFNAE and includes a couple of other goodies alongside the upgrade to KitKat. The full changelog as posted by Sprint:

  • Android 4.4 (Kit Kat): The Samsung Galaxy S 4 device will be updated to support the Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) software.
  • Prevention Information alert: Customers should no longer receive “Prevention Information – An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorized attempt to access system in your device. It may be safe to delete an application obtained from an unauthorized route. Check now?” alert messages on the device.
  • Zact Mobile: Device now includes the Zact Mobile compatibility.

The Moto X and HTC One may have beaten the Samsung Galaxy S 4 to KitKat here in the U.S., but all that matters now is that the GS4′s rollout is finally underway. There’s no word yet on exactly when the other major U.S. carriers will update their Galaxy S 4 variants to Android 4.4, but here’s to hoping that this Sprint update starts a KitKat chain reaction that brings the other upgrades along quickly.

Sprint says that the Android 4.4.2 update for its Galaxy S 4 will begin rolling out over the air today, Feb. 13, and that the push will continue through March 9. If you don’t feel like waiting for your serving of KitKat to be pushed to your device – and really, who wants to wait around for a KitKat treat? – you can check for the update manually by grabbing your trusty GS4 and heading into Menu > Settings > More > System Update > Update Samsung Software > Check now. Happy updating!

I guess I will get another Samsung. This was a timely update, I wish they would have treated my Note 2 that nice for updates. Samsung is definitely working on it, seems to be the best for updating

“The HTC One may have won the race to KitKat here in the U.S., but thankfully the Samsung Galaxy S 4 isn’t far behind.”

Motorola was the first non-Nexus to receive Kitkat, and the Sprint varient had KK by mid December, a full 2 months before either of these two brands.

A distant 3rd isn’t bad for the leading Android phone maker, I guess.

Sprint needs to crank this Note 3 update out already….they tease us stop the update then start updating the GS4,I don’t care about no dang third party view case, that’s wack anyway, I feel like every time I get a Note I get burned somehow, I need to start getting the popular more adopted phones like Moto X or GS, because these niche phones always get the burn. *end rant*
