Sony Xperia Z2 slated to go on sale in the U.S. this summer

When Sony took the wraps off of the Xperia Z2 back in February, the company teased that its new flagship smartphone would begin rolling out around the globe in March. Now we’re here nearing the end of April and the Xperia Z2 is nowhere to be found in the U.S. The good news is that that’ll be changing soon.

Sony recently confirmed to TechCrunch that the Xperia Z2 will launch in the U.S. Unfortunately, the firm wouldn’t provide a firm release date, instead only saying that the Z2 will arrive during the “summer.”

As for which carriers will sell the Z2, well, that’s still up in the air. Sony plans to offer the Z2 in unlocked form through its online store, just like its done with several of its other recently-released phones. TechCrunch gleamed from Sony’s statement that the device maker is still in talks with U.S. carriers about selling the device and that no plans have been set in stone quite yet.

Sony hasn’t exactly had a huge presence in the U.S. lately: T-Mobile launched the Xperia Z1S earlier this year, but that’s about the only Sony device that we’ve seen on a U.S. carrier recently. And while it’s awesome to hear that Sony will sell the Xperia Z2 unlocked like it has with several other recent devices, doing so also means that it won’t have a presence in carrier stores and it will have a full retail price, two things that won’t help it to grow market share.

Are you interested in the Xperia Z2? If so, would you be willing to pay retail price for an unlocked model or would you only commit to a subsidized unit? If you’re still on the fence about the Z2, be sure to check out our hands-on video with the device below!

    That’s a bit late…

I don’t understand. This phone was shown off a good minute ago and now it seems pretty late to come to the party. Why do companies announce phones and then they come out a month or months later? It should always be a couple weeks later. They really need to start planning these things better.

Honestly, I’d be contented with a firm release date.

I receieved my Z2 on EE (UK) on the 18th April….yet I dont thimk there was ever a UK release date either and many of my friends are still waiting on theirs which they preordered.

I will not purchase the phone through Sony– im only willing to buy my devices through my carrier (verizon). And i will be pissed iff it doesnt come to my carrier because i waited all this time and they should have said something months ago… Im about ready to buy the galaxy s5 anyhow

This is a prime example of why these companies shouldn’t show off a phone until it is ready for prime time. By the time they actually release it, the excitement people had will wear off and there is also going to be phones with the same/better specs launching at the same time. Sony you dropped the ball big time on this one.

Even Though The Z2 Looks Great Sony Is Missing Sales By Not HAving A Firm Release Date And Letting People Know What Carriers Will Have It. My Family Are Due FoR UpgradesbBut Not Sure How Long I’ll Wait Ln Something So Unsure.

Sony could learn a thing or two from HTC. The One M8 is the best Android phone out there. Blows the Galaxy S5 away…

  • John

This was the phone I wanted to get initially but they’re releasing it too late for me. I ended up getting the HTC One M8. No regrets so far. Plus another negative thing about Sony is they release their phones late and then reveal a slightly upgraded model months later cuz of their 6 month upgrade cycle thing.

  • Nick

REALLY wanted the Z2, but Sony took too long. My S3 screen had cracked, so now I have the One M8. Snooze you lose Sony.

By the time it hits the US, the Z3 will be out. I have to pay full price since I’m on T-Mobile.
