Honeywell takes aim at Nest with Lyric smart thermostat

Honeywell Lyric (2)

Since Nest’s acquisition by Google, we’ve kept an eye on the company, waiting to see the next move in the smart appliance game. Now that move has arrived in the form of a serious competitor: the Honeywell Lyric. The Lyric is a smart thermostat that shares features with the Nest smart thermostat. For $279, the Lyric will be available today from HVAC contractors and will expand to Lowe’s stores in August. But Lyric isn’t only a gorgeous thermostat, it’s also an entire platform designed to bring the idea of an intelligent home to life.

Honeywell is planning to turn the Lyric line into a brand of products designed to automate your home and bring intelligence to it. The Lyric smart thermostat is the logical first-step as a Wi-Fi connected thermostat that can be controlled by your smartphone.

The design is reminiscent of the Nest thermostat, with a simple round display in the center, two buttons flanking it and a rotating wheel on the outer ring that can change the temperature. Honeywell’s Lyric also has some key features that set it apart from Nest such as geofencing, the next evolution of smart thermostats.

Geofencing allows the Lyric to change your settings based on whether or not someone is home. There are two options for a 7-mile or a 500-foot radii that detect when you’re in or out of that range. When you leave the house, the thermostat will change the temperature to a preset of your choosing to save energy. When you enter back into the radius of Lyric, it will take note and kick the system back on to your comfy temp.

Another feature is shortcuts or pre-set profiles. A shortcut can be used to lower the temperature when you go to bed or cool off the house when you have lots of guests. The Fine Tune feature makes the Lyric even more accurate by checking indoor and outdoor temperatures, humidity and the upcoming weather forecast in order to tweak the system to make your home as comfortable as possible.

The Honeywell Lyric is the first step from Honeywell in creating a smart home, and it poses a formidable threat to Nest and Google. It’s only a matter of time before Google and Nest come back with their next iteration, and for us consumers, it’s good to see the market making itself improve by throwing some competition into the mix.

The Lyric app will be available for both iOS and Android.

What’s your take on the Lyric? Is it a true competitor for the Nest thermostat?

Minneapolis, June 10, 2014 / PRNewswire / –
There’s no such thing as a regular routine for today’s busy families. No two days are alike and schedules change by the minute. Honeywell (NYSE: HON), the leader in managing home comfort and security for 125 years, is today launching the Lyricâ„¢ thermostat to put you back in control. The Lyric thermostat knows when you are coming and going, based on smartphone location, to deliver comfort when you’re home and savings when you’re away.

The Lyric thermostat is the first offering in a new family of innovative connected home products from Honeywell, the recognized category leader found in more than 150 million homes globally. The Lyric thermostat is designed for how people really live today:

Using the location of your smartphone, the geofencing feature automatically turns the Lyric thermostat into energy saving mode when a home is empty, and then senses when you are coming home and heats or cools the house to your preferred temperature.
The Fine Tune feature factors indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity, and weather into its algorithm, enabling it to provide the most comfortable temperature for homeowners. No other do-it-yourself Wi-Fi thermostat on the market today does that.
“Most people don’t have a predictable pattern to how they live their lives; why not have a thermostat that adjusts based on your real-time schedule?” says Beth Wozniak, president of Honeywell Environmental and Combustion Controls. “With the Lyric thermostat’s geofencing capability, my house returns to my preferred comfort setting when I’m within a few miles from home. Quite simply, the Lyric thermostat offers me the ability to keep my life in tune — delivering comfort when I’m home and savings when I’m gone.”

Beyond a smartphone, the temperature can be managed using Honeywell’s familiar round dial control on the thermostat itself. With the Lyric app (available via the App Store on iTunesâ„¢ and Google Playâ„¢), homeowners can adjust their home’s temperature to life as it happens, wherever they are. When a homeowner walks up to the Lyric thermostat, a built-in proximity sensor signals the display to turn on and show current temperature and the home’s heating or cooling status. A soft halo of light in orange (heating), blue (cooling), or green (away/energy savings) momentarily illuminates around the thermostat to indicate it is making temperature adjustments. Additionally, touch-sensitive buttons flank the center display — one for accessing current and upcoming weather information, and one for setting back your temperature while you’re away. The Lyric thermostat provides easy-to-understand alerts on when to change a filter, if and when your furnace needs servicing, and even help find a trusted service professional.

The gloss white finish and silver accents of the Lyric thermostat, along with its shallow depth and flush wall mount, add a contemporary appearance to any room. Beyond contemporary design and innovative functionality, it delivers the same reliable control and accuracy for which Honeywell is known since it introduced the iconic ‘Round®’ in 1953.

The Lyric thermostat is available now via professional heating and cooling contractors, and will be available at retail beginning in August 2014 for $279 (MSRP). The article indicates that Honeywell will be rolling out the product via their established contractors. This probably means that only those Honeywell contractors will have access to the any (if any) open web service APIs provided by the Lyric. Android, with its open architecture, has grown leaps and bounds over the iPhone. Honeywell needed a Nest product, but Lyric will probably do more to stop market share loss than growth.
