Samsung announces Gear Live, its first Android Wear smartwatch

Samsung Gear Live

It’s long been rumored that Samsung would be bolstering its smart watch lineup with something running Android Wear. Despite having many Tizen-powered devices already on the market, an Android Wear smart watch was coming. And now Samsung has announced it for all to see, and it’s called the Samsung Gear Live.

This watch looks a lot like the Gear 2, though without a home button and a more toned down design. Unfortunately, no specifications or real info was given, but we could assume it’s a redesigned Gear 2 with similar specs. Of course, it should be a lot better than the Gear thanks to its expanded compatibility and lack of Tizen (naturally).

You’ll be able to purchase the Gear Live, along with the LG G Watch, today on the Play Store. Good on Samsung for entering the Android Wear game and netting the new platform some extra support. If smart watches are to succeed at all, they need support, and Android Wear is the most likely candidate to do it.

I just now (11:45A, Pacific) checked the Play store. No watches there at all.

Don’t know if it is a bad render or what but the Gear Live looks worse than the LG G Watch. Nothing beats the Moto 360 of course but I would take the G Watch over the Gear Live any day of the week.

I rooted my Note 3 and uninstalled Gear Manager and all of the background Gear apps. I wonder if the Gear Live will need them since it’s Android Wear?

      Nope, it shouldn’t.
