Sony updating entire Z series of devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop

Sony isn’t joking around when it comes to supporting its device with software updates. Announced on the official Sony blog, Sony is saying that its “entire premium Z series” of devices is slated to get the newest Android 5.0 update.

According to the announcement, “entire premium Z series” means the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will all be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. That’s a lot of devices.

The first device to get the update will naturally be the Z Ultra Google Play edition, with more devices to follow in 2015. If you bought a Sony device over the last couple years, consider yourself lucky to be covered by such an awesome manufacturer.

Isn’t this kind of silly without posting some sort of timetable? Will these devices get the L update in November? December? 2015?

No, being told your phone will get the update (even if you dont know when) is still great news for 99.9% of people…and the source (Sony) press release clearly says:

“We’ll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above.”

I’m sure they will release more specific dates as it becomes clear to them when they will be ready.

Lollipop is just announced few days ago, now what they’re doing is just to confirm that they will be doing Lollipop for all these devices. There’s no way they can announce the date. The final build of Lollipop isn’t even released to the manufacturer yet.

The Sony smartphones are one of the more impressive smartphones currently available, and certainly among the most technologically advanced.

So true…the Xperia Z3 Compact is arguably the best phone, and certainly the best for the money. For $530, you get a phone with 40% longer battery life than Galaxy or iPhone (according to GSMArena), 4K video(!), 20.7 MP camera, expandable memory, SD card slot, fast performance (according to Engadget)–and it’s waterproof! Speaking of Engadget, they said it was the best small phone on the market. And with a 4.6″ screen, that’s not small–it’s the size of phones before the phablet craze, the size of the iPhone in fact.
