Something monumentally important was announced today. Not the Nexus 6. Or Nexus 9. Or Android 5.0 Lollipop or the Nexus Player and Android TV. It’s the new Android. A friendlier, more accessible, ready for the public Android. And it’s going to propel Google into the future.
Google has been working towards a sort of rebranding of Android for some time now. Nexus commercials have gotten sappy, manufacturers are required to feature the new Android logo on their device’s bootscreen and Google is exerting more control over OEMs to keep Google services and Android front and center on all Android devices. Today feels like a culmination of all the work Google has put into Android over the last year.
Google isn’t willing to let Android play second fiddle to Samsung or HTC anymore, they want Android to be the star of the show — celebrated for its diversity and the way it enriches people’s lives. This is the new Android. Google is proud of what it has built over the years, and they want you to know it.
Check out the new Android ads you will find below. What do you see? Android isn’t the official operating system of nerds everywhere, it’s the official operating system of everyone everywhere. And it’s cool. And it’s funny. And it’s progressive. And it’s connecting people. And it’s connecting devices. Android is about the future, the present, self-driving cars and wearables. And it’s about you.
