Google unleashes Messenger app onto Google Play’s virtual shelves

Google’s already updated one Android app and teased another one today, but apparently El Goog isn’t stopping there.

The new Messenger app is now available for download from Google Play. Messenger is a Google-made app that does just about what you’d expect it to, letting you send and receive SMS and MMS messages, take part in group chats, send audio messages and more. Google’s feature list for the app looks like this:

  • Faster sharing: Select or take pictures and videos directly from the app and share easily. You can even send audio messages to your contacts.
  • Easy search: Search through contacts and conversation threads to find exactly what you are looking for.
  • Purposeful design: New, fluid, material design that is intuitive and delightful.
  • More control: Ability to block SMS senders. No interruptions when you don’t want them!
  • More features: audio messages, emoji support, colored text threads, message archiving and more.

Messenger looks like a nice texting app that’ll fit in nicely with Android 5.0. It’s kind of strange to see Google release this app considering that Hangouts supports SMS, but maybe Messenger is for folks that don’t want to use an OEM’s custom texting app but don’t want Hangouts either?

You can download Messenger at the link below. Once you get it installed, be sure to tell us what you think of it!

Why not video message why a half baked product

Messenger is fun and colourful! Possibly a little too simplistic.. yet that is one of its charms too.
Does anyone know why or how the colours are chosen for each person?

I’m confused. Why did they even make this app?! Why didn’t they just build the features of Messenger into Hangouts??

handouts is a Google product not open source, so the aosp build needs an up to date message app.

I had been using Hangouts as for SMS on my aging GS3 but it lags so much. This app is so much more quick and simple.

I don’t get why they make a new app instead of updating the existing sms/mms app..
