NVIDIA SHIELD tablet now receiving Android 5.0.1

The month of November was a busy one for the NVIDIA SHIELD tablet and Android 5.0, as both the Wi-Fi only option get the official update not too long ago, so did the LTE-equipped model.

Now, for SHIELD tablet owners out there, NVIDIA has begun rolling out yet another update for the device, officially upgrading it to Android 5.0.1. NVIDIA calls this particular update just a “minor release” that’s built to include “a few bug fixes and updates.” Indeed, the update itself is pretty straightforward in its changelog, with most of it leaning towards optimizations or enhancements:

-Operating System update to Android 5.0.1
SHIELD Tablet gets updated to the latest version of Android ‘Lollipop’. This is a minor release which includes a few bug fixes and updates

-System performance enhancements
Improvements in general UI and app responsiveness, including switching between apps

-Camera enhancements: Live HD Effects (HDFX)
The Camera Awesome app gets some cool new creative effects for stills and videos. All the effects leverage the power of the Tegra K1 GPU to deliver live-preview and full resolution recording with the effects

-Memory optimizations
Enhanced support and optimizations for memory intensive apps

-SHIELD Power Control Menu
We’ve brought back the SHIELD Power Control Menu, based on community feedback

-OpenGL 4.5 support

-Localization improvements

It’s good to see that NVIDIA has brought back the Power Control Menu, especially after the community had requested its return. The updates to the Camera Awesome app, too, are certainly worthwhile. If NVIDIA can continue to be timely about Android updates, it will stand out amidst the crowd as one of the few companies that can manage a quick update path for users, which should make them plenty happy.
