Lenovo is a company that’s achieved a huge name in the world of PCs. Its current task is working to spread that name into mobile technology and it’s given several attempts at that already. But the company has yet to give up on the market and continues to work at it. Its latest attempt is the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch, the newest entrant into Lenovo’s line of 10-inch Android tablets.
We’ve spent the past couple weeks testing the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch and have compiled our thoughts on it. Check out our full review below.
Lenovo is marketing the Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch as a mid-range device, but it’s surprisingly well-equipped. On the specs list you can find a 10.1-inch 1920×1200 display, 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z3745 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage plus a microSD card slot, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera, 9600mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and stereo speakers by Dolby. A solid line-up for a tablet of its price.
2. Design and Build Quality
Lenovo has always been good with designing products and the Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is no exception. The tablet features a design of glass, aluminum and plastic that all work together to produce a very well-built tablet that has a pleasant weight and a sturdy feel in the hand. Again, the quality is surprising for a tablet of this price.
The kickstand is the centerpiece of the tablet and it works as intended. It’s quite sturdy and feels durable enough to withstand plenty of wear and tear. More than that, the kickstand makes it easy to use the tablet in several different ways. You can tilt it on a desk for typing, stand it up for viewing media or hang it on a wall for viewing all sorts of things. It’s a multi-purpose addition that sets the tablet apart from others.
The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch gets solid approval on its design and build quality.
The 1920×1200 display on the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is a big step-up from the last model. While the two displays share the same resolution, the Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is free of the jagged sharpening effect that was present on the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+. It also features better colors and saturation, making it far more pleasant to use, particularly when watching videos. It earns a thumbs-up in our book, even if there are better displays out there.
Lenovo continues to struggle in the software department. While the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch has improved upon the design and performance of the software, it mimics iOS to a great degree and still lacks a whole lot of refinement. More than that, the software used is based on Android 4.4 KitKat, rather than the newer Android 5.0 Lollipop. And with Lenovo’s track record, we’re not confident in an update any time soon.
Lenovo either needs to stick with stock Android (and a newer version of it) or else get their act together when it comes to software, as it continues to hold them back.
Performance on the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is a vast improvement from the previous model, but it’s still lacking in areas. Animations are smoother and there’s less stuttering than before, yet it’s still there. Most of the performance issues seem to stem from the software, so if that gets remedied, then the performance likely will be as well. Things are good, but not great.
The rear camera on the Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is nothing special, but it’s better than some tablet cameras. If you’re in need of a camera and don’t have anything else, it’ll work in most situations with the notable exception of low-light. The front-facing camera should do well enough for video calls and the like, which is what most will use it for.
This is one area where Lenovo has always excelled, particularly in its tablets. The cylinder that enables the kickstand also holds the huge cylindrical battery. With moderate usage, you can get a full two days of battery life out of the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch. With very light usage, you could likely squeeze out three days. All in all, Lenovo has once again impressed us with battery life.
Lenovo is a company that deserves props for being persistent. It’s struggled to create a great tablet, but it’s slowly getting closer to that goal. The Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is the latest attempt and it refines features of its predecessors, but also leaves some things to be desired. One thing is certain, Lenovo needs to step up its software game if it hopes to continue improving its devices. The hardware is filled with potential, but the software is continuing to hold it back.
Nonetheless, the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is a very good tablet at an affordable price, if you’re willing to look past the software.
