Google has confirmed that a new Chromebook Pixel is in the works

Google‘s own Renee Niemi has confirmed that the company is currently working on a new Chromebook Pixel and that it will be coming soon. The original Chromebook Pixel served as a reference and concept device from Google, designed to show what could be done with Chrome OS and that the OS isn’t simply for budget devices. The Chromebook Pixel 2 looks as though it will carry on that legacy, as Niemi stated that the device will be a “proof of concept” and will designed for developers. Read the full quote:

We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And...our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out.Renee NiemiGoogle

The Chromebook Pixel 2 isn’t a device intended for consumers, but one made for developers and those working closely to improve Chrome OS. The device is rumored to share a similar design to its predecessor, maintaining a 12.85-inch screen size and ultra-high resolution. It also looks to have built-in fans and the new reversible type-C USB ports. Other specs are still up in the air, but we’ll keep you posted on further developments regarding the Chromebook Pixel 2.

I can see their merit but chromebooks are not for me. I won’t always be online and I insist on running a normal OS. If you’re in a certain sphere I bet they’re great. For now, I’m eyeing off one of those new 11.6″ netbooks. I’m waiting for one that allows you to add RAM :-)

This is why Google are failing with the Chromebook (I travel all over the place and have never seen one, train, cafe, library etc), the regular models are too limited. They should target the next Pixel at mobile professionals like me too, not just devs. We want a larger screen, that’s a touch screen, a great keyboard, more ports etc. For me, a tall touch screen makes all the difference.
