Sponsored Android app search results coming to the Google Play Store

In the next few weeks, you may start to see a new type of result when you search the Google Play Store for an app.

Google is going to start testing sponsored Android app search results in the Google Play Store in the coming weeks. The ads look similar to regular app search results, but they contain a yellow rectangle with the word “Ad” in it to identify itself as an advertisement. The initial batch of ads will be from developers that are already using Google search ads for their apps.

It’s worth noting that it looks like these sponsored app search results will only appear in searches, so you won’t see one right on the Google Play Store home page. The ads are a new way for Google to leverage its search and ad skills to make money from Android, and they could help developers get their apps to stand out in an increasingly-crowded app store.

I have no problem with this, as advertising is Google’s business model. The key here is that IT IS *LABELED* as advertising, which is way better than m$’ bling. If they did it like the “results” on m$ or the “stories” on TV and radio, I’d definitely be cranky about it, too.
