The Samsung Gear VR is hands down the coolest accessory not just for the Note 4, but for any phone period. Powered by Oculus, the new kings of virtual reality, for just $199 you can turn your smartphone into the guts of a fully functional VR headset. Unfortunately, due to its highly customized design, the Note 4 is the only device that works with the Gear VR. Until now. Kinda.
No, Samsung isn’t expanding device compatibility with the original Gear VR. They are instead announcing a new virtual relaity headset made just for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Aside from being made for the Galaxy S6, little has changed in the latest Gear VR. It’s 15% smaller, because the S6 is smaller than the Note 4, of course. And can now be powered vis USB port for longer usage times.
Actual performance of the new Gear VR will depend entirely on the S6 that goes inside. Which means it should be somewhat better than the Note 4 powered version. The Galaxy S6 has a denser display, which will lend to higher graphic fidelity, and a better graphics processor, which should improve overall performance.
When the new Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be available and how much it’s is anyone’s guess, but in the next couple months and at around $199 are a good guess.
