Xiaomi Mi 5X official with dual rear camera setup, sub-$50 Mi AI Speaker also introduced

Today was a big day for Xiaomi, as the company introduced a new smartphone, an update to its custom UI, and a new smart speaker.

First up is the Xiaomi Mi 5X. This variant of last year’s Mi flagship offers a larger 5.5-inch 1920×1080 display and dual rear cameras.

The Mi 5X’s dual rear camera setup is similar to the one found on the Mi 6. These are two 12-megapixel sensors, one wide angle and one with a telephoto lens, and Xiaomi says that you can use ‘em to add background blur to your images. You can also use the telephoto lens for optical zoom.

Inside of the Mi 5X’s metal unibody shell lives a Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a microSD slot. There’s also a 3080mAh battery and a USB Type-C port to charge it with. Rounding out the Mi 5X’s hardware specs is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a rear fingerprint reader.

On the software side, the Android-powered Mi 5X runs Xiaomi’s new MIUI 9 users interface. Xiaomi touts that MIUI 9 offers faster app launch times, an image search feature that can even dig into your conversations when you’re looking for photos, a split-screen mode, and a smart app launcher that’ll suggest apps that you might want to launch based on what’s currently on your screen.

The Xiaomi Mi 5X will launch in China at a price of 1499 Yuan ($222 USD).

Also revealed today is the Mi AI Speaker. This is Xiaomi’s entry into the smart speaker market, and it packs a six microphone array to hear you from whichever direction you’re shouting at it.

The Mi AI Speaker offers many of the features that you’d expect from a smart speaker, like the ability to ask it questions, check the weather, play music, and control smart home appliances. Xiaomi also says that its Mi AI Speaker will be able to learn new skills in the future. Finally, the device includes Bluetooth for connecting your phone or tablet as well as DLNA and dual-band Wi-Fi.

Pricing for the Mi AI Speaker will be 299 Yuan ($44 USD).
