Mobile 5G is coming this year, and now we know the first cities that’ll get it.

AT&T says that parts of Dallas, Texas; Waco, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia will be among the first to get its mobile 5G service. AT&T plans to launch 5G in a dozen cities by the end of 2018, and it’ll reveal more of those cities in the coming months.

AT&T’s mobile 5G will be standards-based, and at least initally, it’ll use millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. Additional spectrum bands will be utilized for 5G later on.

Of course, a mobile 5G network wouldn’t be much good if you don’t have devices to use it. AT&T has said that the first devices will be “pucks” like mobile hotspots, but smartphones and other devices will come in early 2019 and beyond.

We’re still early in the 5G game, but it’s exciting to see that the coverage is going to begin rolling out in 2018. Stay tuned and we’ll update you on the other lucky cities that’ll be part of AT&T’s mobile 5G rollout.
