Google Maps and Nintendo celebrate Mario Day

The team working on Google Maps is definitely willing to change things around for a quick promotion, like back in 2015 when you could use a TIE Fighter or X-Wing as your navigation arrow within the app in celebration of the wide release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Google Maps even featured Ms. Pac-Man last year for April Fools’ Day. And now Mario is getting on the fun, too.

To help celebrate March 10 (MAR10), or Mario Day, Google Maps is teaming up with Nintendo to bring the kart-racing plumber into the app to help you get from one place to another, all while avoiding digital bananas.

As noted by The Verge, the most up-to-date version of Google Maps for Android and iOS will now let you tap on the “?” icon that appears next to destinations to turn your standard navigational marker into a small Mario icon riding in his familiar red go-kart from the Mario Kart series.

As a fun bonus, if you tap on one of those “?” marks within Google Maps 100 times, you will get the familiar “1-UP” sound from the video games.

And if you missed it yesterday, Nintendo is also going to start offering Super Mario Run for 50% off beginning Saturday, March 10 to help celebrate Mario Day.

What do you think of the Mario Day celebration in Google Maps? Are you going to try it out?
