Instagram creating tool to download data

Instagram is solving a common complaint among customers with an upcoming tool that will allow users to download their personal data that’s been shared on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and messages, though it remains to be seen if other data is included, such as Stories, likes, comments, and more. Instagram has long been one of the most difficult platforms to download data from, with restrictions on what data users can download and how they’re able to download it.

This upcoming tool from Instagram is designed to allow users to better store their personal data, as well as making it easier to export data. This should enable users to easily switch to a competing social network, bringing their existing content with them. It also allows Instagram to come into compliance with a new European GDPR privacy law that specifies data portability as a requirement of social networks.

This tool hasn’t been released or detailed yet, but Instagram confirmed its existence to TechCrunch.
