A lot of smartphones on the market today have a built-in portrait mode, which allows owners to blur the background of their photo for a more stylized look.
Not every phone supports the feature, though, so third-party apps have to come to the rescue. As such, it makes sense that Instagram, the biggest social network with a primary goal of sharing photos and videos, would add it. Instagram is calling the new feature Focus, and it will allow users to blur the background of their photos and videos for portrait mode-styled content.
When you open the camera function within Instagram, you will see the “Focus” option next to the “Superzoom”, both of which are below the record button. You can tape the button to snap the photo, or hold the button to record a video. Instagram will let users add filters and other edits, and then you can publish the content as you see fit.
Instagram confirmed the feature works with the iPhone SE, 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+ and X. It will also work with “select Android devices”, but there aren’t any named specifically.
The new feature is available now in the most updated version of the Instagram app.
