Snapchat is already one of the most popular messaging services out there, offering ephemeral messaging, Stories, and even easily digestible shows. So it’s about time that video games get included in the mix, too.
Today Snap is announcing what it calls “Snappables”. These are new augmented reality (AR) games which will let Snapchat users play games like basketball, play music, or fight off aliens out in space. Control schemes will change depending on the game, with some titles offering traditional touch controls while others will be controlled by movement and still others will even be controlled by Snapchat users’ facial expressions.
That’s right, you can play a digital weightlifter with just your eyebrows.
Here’s a video showing it off:
Some of the games will offer traditional leaderboards which you will be able to challenge your friends to beat your high scores on. Other titles will be multiplayer offerings, but the finer details on how that will work remains unknown.
One final detail here is that Snapchat will be adding new Snappables on a weekly basis. The company didn’t announce how many will be available out of the gate, though. New content on a daily basis is definitely a good thing, though, especially if the games are fun and you don’t mind making crazy faces out in public.
What do you think of the Snappables idea?
