Some manufacturers are starting to put a real focus in on the mobile gaming community, which has already been huge for years thanks to titles like Candy Crush that let anyone with a smartphone jump into a video game with a couple of minutes on their hands.
Razer wasn’t the first company to really jump on board the gamer bandwagon — Sony would get that title — but it’s certainly the go-to option these days. The Razer Phone is marketed as the perfect handset for gamers, but Xiaomi wants to nudge in on the territory a bit with its newest smartphone, the Black Shark.
Similar to Razer’s phone, the Black Shark is a black-and-green handset that certainly stands out in color scheme alone. The device boasts a 5.99-inch FHD+ display, and Xiaomi says it has 97% DCI-P3 color gamut support. There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood, and the Black Shark will be available in two variants: one with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage and the other with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage.
There are 12-megapixel and 20-megapixel cameras around back, a 20-megapixel front-facing camera, a 4000mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support, and Android 8.0 Oreo on board. There is no mention of a 3.5mm headphone jack, though, and it doesn’t look like the Black Shark has a microSD card slot, either. The Black Shark features liquid cooling, which the company says will reduce temperatures by 8 degrees Celsius, making it possible to play longer without worrying about overheating.
There is also an external controller accessory, but it only attaches to one side of the phone. It will connect for game playing via Bluetooth and has its own 340mAh battery, which Xiaomi says will last for 30 hours. It will retail for ¥179 (about $30).
For customers in China, where it looks like Xiaomi’s Black Shark will only be available for now, pre-orders go live on April 20. The 6GB/64GB model will cost ¥2999 (about $477 USD), while the 8GB/128GB variant will retail for ¥3499 (about $557 USD).
