Google releases Wear OS Developer Preview 2

It has been more than a month since Google officially released the first developer preview for Wear OS. Now Google is back at it again.

Google has released Wear OS Developer Preview 2 to those interested in working with the pre-release software. As was the case with the first developer preview, this one is only available for the Huawei Watch 2 and Huawei Watch 2 Classic.

Google is adding new features with the second DP as well. First and foremost, there is support for Google Actions. With Actions, users will be able to take advantage of Google Assistant to control products, including accessories for the home. It will also let you order from participating restaurants or order an Uber.

Meanwhile, Google Assistant on Wear OS is getting improvements as well. The smartwatch platform now supports follow-on suggestion chips, text-to-speech, and visual cards. All of which should be a welcomed addition.

Google is also rolling out an enhanced battery saver mode which will turn off things like the built-in radios, tilt-to-wake, and even the touchscreen. The watch will also show a power-efficient watch face for good measure. If you want to check the time, just press that side button once. If you long-press on the side button, you’ll go back to normal mode.

One important change from the first developer preview: Google initially made it so that a Wear OS smartwatch couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi when Bluetooth wasn’t connected as well, in an effort to save battery life. That didn’t go over so well, apparently, and Google has removed that specific feature from Developer Preview 2.
