Oath, Verizon’s subsidiary brand handling media, has signed a partnership with Samsung to feature four of its apps pre-installed on Samsung devices, including the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The four apps that will come installed on Samsung devices are Oath Newsroom, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Sports, and Go90, a mobile video app. Additionally, native ads from Oath will be found within Galaxy Apps and Samsung’s Game Launcher.
The partnership will initially launch in the U.S. as Oath becomes the primary content provider for Bixby Home. The partnership will then expand around the globe to Samsung devices featuring Bixby.
Oath and Samsung will share the ad revenue, though specific terms of the deal have not been revealed.
The partnership may ruffle feathers for some, as the advancement of ads into user’s smartphones can be construed as an intrusion. Even moreso, it’s aggravating to know that even more of the limited storage space on our smartphones will be used to store pre-installed apps designed to generate advertising revenue.
What do you think about this new deal? Does it make you reconsider purchasing a Samsung smartphone?
