If you were excited about the possibility of Samsung launching its newest smartwatch, the rumored Gear S4, with Google’s Wear OS on board instead of Tizen, there’s a bit of bad news today.
Evan Blass (@evleaks) took to Twitter on Thursday to follow up on his previous report that Samsung may be working on a smartwatch with Google’s Wear OS. At the time, Blass said that there were Samsung employees walking around with Gear watches running Wear OS rather than Tizen. That led to speculation that the Gear S4 could be outfitted with the Google’s smartwatch OS rather than Samsung’.
Update: turns out these were actually just one-offs made by Google and seeded to some Samsung workers (i.e. keep moving, nothing to see here).

Turns out that won’t be the case after all. According to Blass, those smartwatches were devices that were “one-offs made by Google” and that they were provided to some Samsung employees. That’s it. No testing of Wear OS on a Samsung-branded smartwatch in an effort to work on something new for the market.
It’s not impossible that one day Samsung launches a Wear OS-equipped smartwatch, but it doesn’t look like it will be some day soon.
