OnePlus will launch a 5G smartphone next year

The OnePlus 6T is coming soon, but yesterday OnePlus teased an entirely different phone.

OnePlus will release a 5G smartphone in 2019, says OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. He confirmed the news at a Qualcomm event, explaining that OnePlus and Qualcomm worked together earlier this year to conduct a 5G test at Qualcomm’s HQ in San Diego.

Details on this 5G-capable OnePlus phone are still pretty light, but Pei said that he believes it’ll be one of the first, if not the first, 5G smartphones to come to market.

OnePlus has always been about grabbing headlines with its marketing and its aggressive device pricing, and launching one of the first 5G phones will surely get the company some attention, too. The carriers will still be early on in their 5G rollouts next year, so coverage may be a bit limited for anyone who takes the plunge on OnePlus’s 5G phone, but hey, sometimes that happens when you’re an early adopter.
