Xiaomi’s back with Black Shark Helo gaming phone

Back in April, Xiaomi stepped into the mobile gaming realm with Black Shark, a startup under Xiaomi that created a powerful gaming phone by the same name. Just a few months later, Black Shark is already releasing its second device, dubbed Helo. The Black Shark Helo upgrades the performance of the original device with a slate of improved specs. Add to that a better design and improved gaming controls and you have a winner.

Under the hood, the Helo is powered by a Sanpdragon 845 processor with vapor-cooling chambers. This processor is paired with 10GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 256GB storage, ensuring smooth gameplay and plenty of space. Other specs include a 6.01-inch 2160×1080 AMOLED display, 12-megapixel 1.25um rear camera with f/1.75 aperture + 20-megapixel rear camera, 20-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 4000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.

The Helo features the “Shark” toggle that will bring up a customized UI designed for gaming. Additionally, the rear of the device now features an RGB logo and LED light strips that are fully customizable and that can react to gameplay.

A notable addition to the Black Shark Helo is a bundled protection case. When the phone is placed in this case, the Bluetooth game controller can slide into place along the top edge of the phone, providing a joystick and left shoulder trigger. This allows for more precise control and takes one thumb off the screen during gameplay.

The Black Shark Helo is launching in China on December 12 with a starting price of 3,199 yuan ($460 USD) for the base model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The top-tier Sport Edition will sell for 4,199 yuan ($605 USD) with fully upgraded specs and an additional right-hand controller.

What are your thoughts on the Black Shark Helo? How about gaming phones in general? Is this a trend that you’re a fan of?
