Best Tablet For The Money

Posted Apr 18, 2012 at 2:23 pm in Threads > Smartphones & Tablets

My anniversary is coming up in the beginning of June. My wife has been on me about getting her a tablet since i have an iPad and she likes how much easier it is to read books, play draw something, etc. on the larger screen. She wants something with at least a 7″ screen, but told me not to spend a lot on her since I just lost my job at the end of February and finances aren’t great right now. I am looking to get her the best tablet i can without spending more than about $250. Please help me.

Should point out that since she doesn’t like iOS and she definitely want to play draw something on it, Android is a must, but there is no specific version requirements.

I would recommend the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, it’s only $250 and has some great specs. This tablet is supposed to debut on April 22nd and seems well worth the cost.

Another vote for Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 at $249.

Kindle Fire at $199 is still a good option. I don’t think Draw Something is available in Amazon’s Appstore though.

Personally, I’d say hold off on the decision. Given that you’re looking at the beginning of June, it’s certainly possible (I have no clue how likely) that even the Nexus Tablet might be an option. Either way, though, you should have better/cheaper options if you can wait a month+ to decide.

Definitely agree with holding off until later. When the new ASUS Transformer, Nexus Tablet, and whatever else Samsung’s got cooking hit the market, some of the tablets that are around 10 in might even drop down to 300 range. Maybe by then you can splurge the extra 50 or some of the 7 inches might drop a bit (probably unlikely). Either way, holding off won’t hurt.

One other suggestion – check out the refurbs on Amazon. You can get great deals on the larger tablets, and you know even the oldest of them aren’t that old. I think she’ll find the bigger screen a plus, and there are some good values out there right now. I’m rather partial to my Sony Tablet S – but I have rather niche needs (need a tablet that can handle a full-sized SD card from my camera).

Sound advice, but these deals will be even better at the end of May/beginning of June.

Thanks guys. I’m gonna hold off for now. I’ll keep an eye out for what hits the market between now and then.

Keep us informed for what you decide. I’m having similar thoughts running through my head and looking also for a good price/quality ICS seven inch tablet for the summer.

Nook color, root, then throw CM9 on it.

I know this probably won’t be a popular answer, but save your money until you get a job and get your finances in order. A consumption device should be the last thing on your list of priorities right now. You never know what will happen tomorrow and if it were me without a job, I know that the instant I threw down money for a tablet I didn’t really need something would break on the car or the fridge would die and have to be replaced.

Having said all of that I agree with waiting for the next crop of tablets to hit the market before making a decision.

Jax, you always manage to get into EVERYTHING I go on related to Android. I’m impressed somebody’s more addicted then me. Also, for “best value”, the HP Touchpad wins. But due to it’s entirely selling out, I doubt that it matters. To whoever mentioned the “Nook Color”, I sincerely hope you meant the Nook Tablet, as the Color was the slowest, worst money spent device I’ve ever purchased. The Archos 80 G9 8-inch is FANTASTIC for $249, and it’s currently only $200 at staples, running stock ICS. I’d recommend that for an introductory tablet.

As i look at tablets all over the internet, i see lots of tablets on the lower end of the price range that look like good stats but are brands I’ve never heard of like ‘ *ainol ‘

    How much does brand matter?
