Imagination Desireplex. What truly original idea would you love to see in an Android device?

Over the past few years there have been a ton of original products to hit the market. More times than none each has been crowned as either necessary, simply the neatest idea ever, or just “over the top and worthless”.

Notable examples:

Yota PhoneDual screen. One of them is e-ink.

Let me start with some of my own ideas.

  1. Entirely modular. If I want a better CPU let me just swap it out with a new one.
  2. Touch sensitive side panels. Set regions on the side of the device that are associated with different gestures. Slide the left side to control volume. Double tap anywhere on the right to turn it on. Hold the top to change to silent mode.
  3. Transitional display. When in different shades of light it will change it’s composition for better readability.
  4. Expandable display. The display itself is overlapped until you expand it. The device then would expand to twice its original size.
  5. Smell sensor. Could warn the warn the user of a potential gas leak, overly polluted areas, or harmful airborne contagions.

    Honestly? What I really want is a portrait physical keyboard on a device, but that it would be removable. Instead of having to be charged and synced with bluetooth device that exist today, having a connection point on the back of the device would allow for the keyboard to connect, send information (keystrokes), and have a charge. By having this access point one would be able to attach different items such as an extra battery, or a gamepad. Software keyboard continue to improve but I do miss the tactile feel of physical keys.

      I really don’t know why this isn’t a bigger thing. There’s so many times when I’ve heard, “Well I have one criteria. It has to have a physical keyboard”. When that happens the amount of devices you can recommend to them plunders to a pretty small amount.

      Too bad Asus doesn’t read this blog. They would love your idea ;)

        I had the original droid and barley used the keyboard because I don’t like typing in landscape and the keys have no feel to them. Having the portrait orientation is important and being able to remove it would be great. It also means that people who don’t want the keyboard there don’t have to have it. Also with the connection point idea there could also be a landscape keyboard option.

      That is such an awesome idea. Also Gamepads could easily attached.
      My idea was similar even though not as revolutionary: Every Phone they make should come in a version with a qwertz slide out

      I had a Windows Mobile phone like that which I really liked.

      It was the HTC Advantage X7510.

    This one’s more for the OS and not the hardware.
    I’d like to see expandable unread counts. Samsung (and maybe others), Nova Launcher, and Apex Launcher can all display unread counts over app logos. I’d like to see these expandable by a pinching gesture, so it can display exactly what information is available.

      The Motorola Photon Q does exactly that. The only difference is you touch the icon and slide up.

    Those things all sound like gimmicks to me. All I want is a nice screen, a physical camera button, and nothing stupid going on. Custom crapware, infrequent updates, radios that suck, and design that attempts to differentiate itself from the set of things that look good all counts as something stupid. So do these gimmicks.

      I would like to argue with this a million times over. Samsung’s latest iteration of touchwiz provides an abundance of features that some may consider bloatware but if you actually gave them a chance they would make mobile computing so much easier. Pen gestures, motion controls, one handed operation, and a plethora of accessibility options are a major plus. They’ve been such a breeze to use that I actually prefer touchwiz over the latest update of stock android. And Asus has been a stellar provider of consistent updates, solid hardware, and unique ideas. The other companies… well at least they tried to do something they were passionate about.

      Try to think out of the box homie DH. If it’s not your thing then don’t bash it :(

        I’ve used TouchWiz, and I can’t *stand* it.

        I played with the Echo, and even if not for the wonky mechanics of the device, felt that the idea of the dual-screens was, in practice, quite worthless.

        I imagine that anybody who actually needs a projector actually needs a projector, and not just some piece of crap attached to a phone, so that’s going to be a worthless gimmick, too.

        I suppose I’ll consider foldable OLED devices when they finally come. But that’s a long ways down.

    Well, I’ve yet to see it anywhere, much less in smartphones, and quite frankly don’t see it happening at all, but one thing that I would like to see in computers in general is multi-machine computing.
    Imagine, there is a brand new game out for your whatever of choice, but unfortunately said whatever just doesn’t have the raw power to run it. Luckily,you just so happen to have 2 or 3 older models. So, with $20 worth of cords, you can hook up all your machines to bolster your main device, giving it enough juice to do whatever it is that you want, albeit with some inconvenience, and prolonging your device life.

    Obviously most applicable to PCs, but it could certainly have applications in smartphones.

    Pixeliztional dementional data reocvery, that contains the following: Sensorized tagging, triggering, tethering, porting that can be transposed upon all devices which can relieve all system configurations by way of dual communicational systematical codings encoded through it’s type of bindings by way of fitting data bits inside pixels located on screens or in essence, sceens that communicate whith devices in unique ways beyond that of the conventional dementions they hold today shuch as just being HD or touch, just because a Graphics Card or a systems API’s it uses says it can be yet can only deliver only a certain amount of GPU for the specific API’s being used in a system’s set up that’s focused and fixed as a system that’s reached it’s peak attached equipment or system potential already in use! The means are there already, period. So many unique things can and would emerge from use of this tech. it boggles the mind to it’s uses! Yes…excellerators of sorts if you will, just to mention God knows what else!!!
