Ingress – Niantic Lab’s new ARG – who’s playing?

Posted Nov 19, 2012 at 2:56 am in Threads > Games

***Unfortunately, I do not have any Ingress invites. Please feel free to join the conversation about the game though***

Google’s Niantic Labs have released the follow up to their Field Trip app, and it’s got Google+ going crazy – Ingress

Ingress gets you moving up and around to capture portals, which are mostly located on public works of art – sculptures, murals, statues, etc – or on public buildings – post offices, fire departments, etc.

I was lucky enough to get in on the beta, and have been playing for the last few days. It’s made me have the following thought several times:

Now, if you’ve not received your invite yet, there are still things you can do with Ingress. You can read all sorts of backstory here. Once you’ve installed the app, you can submit suggested portal locations (Instructions here.)

So far, I’ve enjoyed my time in Google’s augmented reality, the G+ #Ingress trending topic has been all sorts of fun to read – it’s been a combination of people begging for invites, and some pretty impressive content. Regional factions have already started to spring up as well – I’m part of the Chicago Resistance.

So who else has gotten in? Who else is looking forward to getting in? Who has NO idea what the hell I’m talking about? Let’s talk about everything Ingress here.

  • Darren

I too got the invite to play, There was no portals where I live so I had to use their submit service to add some to my area. I think this is a clever way to get people out and about and off the xbox and PS3, But I think it’s more of a way of collecting information about certain areas ready for when “project glass” get’s released either way great fun!

I have also started a forum aimed at Ingress ;-)

    • Rafael

Darren, how do I submit service to add portals in my area?

      • Darren Cole

Just take a picture on your phone go to share and and scroll down until you see the the NIA Super Ops tab, Just click on it and choose a name for your portal and follow the instructions. Hope that helps

        • professandobey

Also make sure that your pictures are geotagged.

  • iamXiV92a

Bah! I’m waiting on an invite for this, but it looks awesome!

  • freppy

No portals near where I work, so I can’t play during the day – but I have submitted quite a few possible portal locations to niantic to hopefully create! This game is oddly addictive.

  • Zagrash

I’m finding (on the resistance side at least) the camaraderie has been almost instant, and VERY strong…it’s pretty cool meeting new people with the same objective, even if that objective is all imaginary =)

I saw that they’re starting to roll out user invites, so hopefully more people are able to get in on the fun!

    • professandobey

Indeed. I went and met up with complete strangers who were taking portals in my area. One of them even bought us Starbucks! They helped this newbie get the hang of things.

    • carlos

You poor thing, just join the enlightened. Thins are much better over here!

  • Darren Cole

I think the games launches to the general public on the 30th November, I think at the last count there was nearly 5 million people on this, But don’t quote me. If that’s the case then this will be huge

  • Taylor Wimberly

I got an invite last week, but I haven’t touched it yet.

    • Zagrash

You should give it a shot, it’s been lots of fun so far. We had our first major incursion by the Enlightened last night, and had to go take back our territory and restore all of our portals, etc. The lore behind the series has been compelling enough so far too, that it’s definitely kept my attention.

Please send me invite, I am looking forward to play this awesome game…please anyone…thanks

  • Jeff Watts

Hi I am looking for an invite. If anyone has one then send to me at [email protected]

  • diego

preciso de um convite alguem me mande um.

  • jaxidian

Like most, I’ve been waiting for an invite too. It doesn’t sound all that awesome to me yet everybody who plays it seems to say it’s awesome. So I really want to try it out and figure out what I’m missing…

  • zerosix

Every Ingress-related topic becomes an invite-request topic in about 10-15 minutes.

    • Zagrash

ha, yeah that tends to happen…I was tempted to put ***I have no invites*** up in the thread, but decided against it. Thankfully there’s also been a very robust community on G+ discussing tactics, lore, etc. and coordinating attacks.

    • Simon

      Haha so true :’D

  • scaarg

Well, I’m in Mexico Resistance. I thinks this ARG is the best idea Google had. It makes you move and you really get to know your city, also they get more locations to use as you can send them a request to open a portal in certain places. They’re getting more locations to put into Google Maps and that cannot be bad.

  • Ryan Gails

Still waiting on an invite. I want to see if this thing can actually be fun or something

    • Zagrash

So far I’ve been had a blast, met some really cool people, and gotten up and around a bit more (which isn’t a bad thing for anybody). I haven’t been following the lore religiously, but what I’ve seen has been interesting, and has fit really well into the fiction.

      • Simon

The awkward moment when the game turns out to be a cover up for a real ‘shapers’ thing

  • iSpanish

I got the invitation in the first week of launch, I played the game for a few days and I kida find the game out of fun now.

  • TheOozyMan

    I neeed an invite!

  • champlification

Can someone hit me up with an invite?

  • friendlyfire

I’ve started to play, but kinda lost intrest.

    It’s very creative though

    • Simon

  • pickledgator

I finally got an invite, but I haven’t started playing yet. Hopefully soon.

    • marcus1518

How did you get an invite?

      • pickledgator

I applied. I may be able to send you one. I’ll check!

  • wreichard

    #resistance all the way!

  • dcortright

I have collected some of the energy but that is about it. I live out in the country and sometimes I don’t feel like walking into bushes for it. Seems awesome though. Can’t wait to invest a little more time into it.

  • YodaDaCoda

It’s not available in my country. Disappointed. I’d love to take it for a spin.

    • Simon

      Try making portals
thats what I’m doing anyway :/

  • zacks2art

Bah!!!! Stupid people play ingress. Lame loser game. Nothing but hippies…. SOB SOB SOB.

Sorry for the moment of sour grapes, I hear nothing but good things about this game and I REALLY want to start playing. Even went around the web and G+ doing a little invite begging, but alas I am still stuck at “Ingres Requires an Invitation to play. Activation Code:”

  • Guitaraholic

I’ve been playing in Liverpool, UK – i think there are about 20 players tops as even in the city centre there aren’t many portals to speak of – I’m hoping over the next few weeks some more pop up as the beta program grows :)

    • karl

mate if you know of anyone with invites please let me know, I in Liverpool and would like to start playing.

  • rc213

Will have to check this out today since I have some spare time, Been putting it off.

  • Nwemo

I have no idea what you’re talking about :)

    • Glenbot3000

Click on the Play Store link and watch the video, then! ;)

Essentially, it’s a location-based online multiplayer game. You have to physically go to a location and attack a sort of base or something – I’m not too sure as the game is still closed to the public as they’re still in testing phases. Hopefully they’ll open it up soon and we can all check it out! :D

      • Zagrash

you aren’t too far off! There are “Portals” located all around us, they are generally concentrated on public works of art. So far, the point is to capture these portals, and create links between portals, and generate fields between 3 portals. It’s kind of like a giant live action game of capture the flag.

  • Zagrash

The Enlightened struck again last night, taking out most of the portals in my area. Thankfully, we have a dedicated team of Resistance fighters, and most of the portals were quickly re-taken and reinforced.

I’m still impressed at the teamwork and camaraderie that’s emerged so quickly. We will probably have another Chicago Resistance meet up soon (or at least Chicago suburbs resistance), and work together to strengthen our foothold.

  • Simon

    I want an invite!!!
How long did u guys have to wait?
and is the code just numbers or does it have letters too?

    • Zagrash

I got pretty lucky, I requested an invite on the Thursday that they started accepting them, and got my code on Saturday night. A friend of mine requested an invite that Friday, and is still waiting. I wonder if by any chance the invite process is based at least partially on your proximity to portals? I have a decent number a pretty short distance from me, so I’m able to be active right away.

I’d be interested to hear if people that are still waiting live in more rural areas or something.

  • R_Leslie

I’m trying hard to get an invite now. Sent a graphic to the devs in hopes that I’ll get noticed. I’ll probably also have to submit so suggested portal sites since I don’t expect to see very many where I am.

  • krisszy0413

If someone can send me a code, i will be the most
happiest man, i request, but nothing, i make pictures, and draws but nothing.
    thank you thank you([email protected])

  • Shalel

Please can someone send me a invite? Im still waiting for one from the main site but thats been 2 weeks now. I would be so happy!

  • jonstle

This is something I would love to try.

  • bryanizmir

You’ve Been Invited to Play Ingress!!!!

Am I lucky or are a lot of people getting these e-mails???

    • jonstle

Lucky I think. I am still waiting.

  • Zagrash

I haven’t seen a ton of people talking about getting in, so maybe you’re lucky!

Something crazy seems to be going on in Ingress, we’re still waiting to see what it means. Portals, control fields, etc. have all been deteriorating significantly over the last few hours.

  • gh0st665

I was invited to play but there was no portals in my area and I am not driving all over to submit one. It’s a great idea, but not the game for me.

    • bryanizmir

You need to check for portals in your area. They are based on historical markers, post offices and fire departments. It looks like fort worth is.very active.with a lot of portals.

  • jaysond

ya that game isn’t the best guess u have to like it or not like it

  • Zagrash

There is certainly less to do if you aren’t around any portals. I’m hoping that they ultimately add a significant amount of portals in order to open it up to more players.

  • BrotherBloat

I wish I had an Ingress invite – all the hype around this game is making me jealous! :D

  • Antony Daamen

When can I play it on a Windows 8 phone?

    • Zagrash

Right now it’s not available outside of Android, though it seems that more invites have been going out recently, so hopefully more people have been able to get in.

  • Wayne Winkler

If anyone has an invite and would like to share I’d be happy to join you in Ingress. my email is [email protected]

  • 1206549

I live somewhere around 10.132617, 124.848397. It’s a small city of around 100,000 people but there are a lot of Android users. I don’t know if there are already players here or if anyone else is waiting for an invite.

  • da9el

cool game! it makes me do sports many times a week. I always have to think about the portals when passing the places where they are positioned…

  • SGB101

I done the exercises at the beginning, but sadly, in my area there is nothing!!!

    • Zagrash

That’s too bad, nothing anywhere close at all? If you haven’t already, check where you can search the area.

      • SGB101

        Sadly not. :o(

  • Kaote

I’ve been playing for about a month now. Its added an interesting element to my weekend bike rides, I find that I am riding in different areas and seeing new things just to seek out portals to hack.

  • Zagrash

Exciting news – we now have a Level 8 Portal in the Chicago area. It’s one of only 6 L8 portals in the world, and I’m proud to say that 5 of those 6 are Resistance portals. Two of the guys that upgraded the portal are part of my resistance community too =)

  • James Sheufelt

Hey people that want to play…. I got an extra activation code … I’m starting bid on the code email me for more details…
    [email protected]

  • tmihai20

I am playing as well (Galati in Romania). There are more Resistance players than Enlightened ones (there is actually only one active player. We, in the Resistance, count 3 players (there are at least 3 that are not that active). What do you think if Google would open this game to iOS users?

  • Gonzalo Martino

I was actually playing this on my city, I found some portals around, but since I was the only one playing there it got kind of boring =____= I took every single place on my city (not that is that big anyways) in a single day
