Nexus 4 Accessories

Posted Dec 07, 2012 at 11:50 am in Threads > Smartphones & Tablets

The Nexus 4 has been one of the most difficult-to-acquire Android phone yet. Maybe this is because it’s a Nexus (a product line which has recently gone mainstream thanks to the Nexus 7). Perhaps it’s because it’s only $300-350 off-contract for such an amazingly powerful phone. Or perhaps it’s because they simply didn’t make very many of them. For whatever the reason, it’s a great deal on a great phone!

Almost as difficult as the phone has been accessories, as well. For example, the official bumper is $20 from Google but is going for up to $100 on eBay because it has also been sold out! Also difficult to find have been good Qi chargers. For those of you who were lucky enough to get a Nexus 4 (or maybe you’re still waiting on yours), please share with us the accessories you have acquired for your Nexus. Were you lucky enough to get an official bumper before being forced to pay $100 on eBay for one? How What about third-party accessories? What do you have and what do you like, or not like, about them?

I have been hearing that the bumper becomes available for short periods of time, but I haven’t had a chance yet to buy it :(

Not sure I even want a bumper. I am afraid of breaking either the top or bottom glass, but I just love the feel of a naked Nexus 4 in my hand. LG/Google did an excellent job with the transition from the sides to the cover glass, both in shape and texture. One of my favorite aspects of the phone would go away with a bumper. Of course, I could use a bumper for daily use and pull it off for “special” times. ;-)

I just got the Rearth RingKe case. It’s pretty neat. Slim and suave!

I got the exact same case the moment I knew Google had shipped mine. I even put it on before I activated any service and it looks/feels amazing, I hardly notice the bulk and don’t miss the sparkles all that much. The front side of the phone is where it’s at anyways.

    My Accessories (so far):

It’s a great bumper! Never seen one that was equal in its quality! What I like most is that the buttons are made from hard plastic that are separate from the rest of the bumper material yet held in. So they truly feel like buttons instead of plastic on top of a button.

Cost me ~$4 on eBay. If you’ve had an S-Line case before, it is exactly what you would expect. By no means super amazing but it’s a great little TPU case that does its job and doesn’t look hideous! With the clear back, you can still see the “glitter” effect on the right/glossy part of the case. The sides come with some grips to help keep it from slipping out of your hand. The button covers leave a bit to be desired but aren’t nearly as bad as they are in many TPU cases. This was DEFINITELY worth $4 and is what I use when I go to the gym where I might be more likely to drop my phone. Otherwise, I use my above-mentioned bumper.

This pad by LG works perfectly with the Nexus 4! From quickly charging to an anti-slip, concaved (bowl-shaped), and magnetic pad, this keeps your Nexus 4 in place while it charges. I find that this charges a tad slower than from a wall outlet but much faster than from a USB port. The #1 complaint most people have is that this pad “beeps” every time it begins charging. Note the key words here are “begins charging” and not “when placed on the pad”. This means, if charging overnight, when it is fully-charged, stops charging, drains a little, then starts charging again, it beeps again. This said, I’ve yet to have it wake me up in the 3+ weeks I’ve had it. So it’s absolutely no problem for me. But you might not like it!

Now one more thing to mention is that I have tested ALL of the Nokia Qi chargers and have found that NONE of them work properly with the Nexus 4. I *think* Nokia has done something non-standard that isn’t fully compatible with the Qi standard since Nokia claims 80% power efficiency from their chargers yet the Qi standard claims 70% efficiency. I think whatever Nokia did here broke their ability to be fully compliant with the Qi standard. That said, this is pure speculation. Could be the Nexus 4 broke something. But I think the blame here falls on Nokia.

No accessories yet, but I’m waiting on the official wireless orb charger.

    • herbivore83

It looks so awesome. I will be jumping on it right away, though I am disappointed we don’t even have an announced release date yet.

    • jaxidian

I got the LG pad for my nightstand at home. With my cats, I didn’t want my Nexus 4 suspended in air by magnets only. However, I DEFINITELY want the orb for my desk at work! That said, I won’t be shocked if it takes them 6+ months to release it. By then, we’ll probably have good third-party options.

  • tris_r

The Orb kicks arse…. style-wise on the others that I’ve seen.

  • Lagnis

The Energizer Qi charging pads are excellent and are basically flat so the device does not slide off making the lack of magnetism OK. Highly recommend. Ordered the Skinomi full body protection skins and the poetic bumper case as well as the poetic full back case and the Ringke slim case by Rearth all for good measure.

    • jaxidian

Have you gotten the Poetic items? I’m curious how they turned out…

    • jeshep

How well has the Energizer pad been working for Nexus 4 phones? Would really like to get a wireless charger but besides the ‘beeping’ LG WCP-70, I haven’t heard of one working well for the Nexus 4.

      • abcdefg

I have the Philips DLP7250P wireless charger and it works great with the Nexus 4 (it doesn’t beep).

  • aranea

I don’t have any accessories yet because I can’t find any.

I want the bumpers but they are never available on the playstore. I wish they did them like nexus 4 give an option to order knowing that it won’t be shipped for 4+ weeks.

Also because I don’t want to cover the back of the phone I’m looking for a good sleeve type of case. Haven’t found one yet. Does any of you know a good one?

  • jaxidian

The bumpers are back on sale and available right now in the US!

    • aranea

      Damn! Missed it again!

  • hollywoodfrodo

If you want NFC tags – make sure to get NTAG203 type and NOT Mifare Classic. You can use Mifare Classic with a few apps, but the Nexus 4 can’t write to or read from those tags other than the UID code. They can read and write to NTAG203′s with no problem though – they have both types of tags and more detailed info on the Nexus 4/10 NFC issue on

I ordered me two of these guys. Black one is supposed to arrive in another ~2 weeks and the blue one in ~4 weeks.

    • jaxidian

btw, found them on ebay with the following search:

      meifeng quicksand e960

    • Chris Lewis

I have a similar case for my S3 and they are amazing!

      • jaxidian

I had a Rock Quicksand for my S3 and if that’s what you’re talking about, I totally agree! One of my favoritest cases ever!

  • jaxidian

I just got my blue Meifeng case in today! Super quick review (I’m swamped) is that it is indeed very similar to the Rock Quicksand, it has a PERFECT fit, feels great, VERY low-profile (thinner than the Rock case), and seems to be of high quality! Has a slight ledge on the front so you can sit your phone face-down without glass touching, but the lip is just BARELY there.

Bad things: Logo on back, 3 weeks shipping, and (super tiny nitpick) I wish it wrapped around the top and bottom corners just a tad more to provide a tad more corner-drop protection (not that this case is meant to help tons with drops).

Overall, I’m VERY happy with this case! I have a black one coming in sometime – I’m hoping it’ll hide the logo a bit more.

The black bumper they have at google

    • aranea

Nexus 4 vs iphone 3gs is not even a competition. He’ll be an android fan in no time :)
