Underclocking Android phones is nothing new. Motorola underclocked the OMAP3430 processor found in the Verizon Droid from its original clock speed (600 MHz) down to 550 MHz.
We originally thought the Acer Liquid would be a 1 GHz phone since it featured the Snapdragon platform, but we were wrong. French site Revioo.com attended the Acer press conference last month and captured the actual clock speed from one of the presentation slides. Hopefully, one of the other Android-powered Snapdragon phones will ship with the full 1 GHz speed.
The Liquid will run at 768 MHz instead of 1 GHz.
The Acer Liquid is reported to be available overseas sometime in November and will ship with Android 1.6. Revioo also has a quick video overview of the Acer Liquid posted to YouTube.

Underclocked means it can be unlocked and run at it’s full potential right? So long as you’re willing to deal with the reduced battery life? What other reason do they underclock the cpu?

Gang, there is a reason why ARM CPU’s are underclocked. Heat is the main reason and battery life is the other. The Pre, iPhone and everyother ARM processor (ARM 11 & ARM
is underclocked. Don’t let your heart be troubled..
Other Snapdragon phones like the Toshiba TG01 are clocked at 1 GHz.
Yeah, but poor battery life seems to be one of the biggest complaints about the TG01.
With a good CPUclock management it should never go above 700 MHz unless you decide to encode 1080p. So if they would implement the right software, there would be no problem to put in a 1GHz-powered CPU (that almost never will run at 1 GHz).
That’s a pretty slick looking device.
But for me, no keyboard=no go

Why are people so obsessed with clock speeds? It’s like being obsessed with engine size in a car, whilst ignoring aerodynamics, braking, handling, efficiency, and all the other engineering input which leads to overall performance. As I understand things, the overall architecture of the chipset and how it interacts with itself and other parts of the machine are also important.
Does it ever occur to you that there might actually be a reason that a handset manufacturer would turn the clock speed down?
Have any of the clock speed naysayers here actually played with an underclocked snapdragon powered handset and been disappointed on the grounds of speed?
Well compared to the today-unveiled 1GHz(!) XPeria X10 it looks *plastic*
OK Acer’s out of my personal contest. Lets wait for the HTC Dragon, otherwise SonyEricsson’s device will be my favourite for my contract renewal in February.
Whilst I still quite like the look of the Acer, I have to agree, it’s nothing compared to the Xperia X10, which is one sexy looking machine. Hopefully the conceptual videos that have been leaked for the X10’s user interface (or user experience as SE are apparently calling it) are close to how the thing actually works in practice when it’s released.
