Google is hosting their “Android gathering” next week, but it looks like we have now learned the pricing info we were looking for. Gizmodo has received an early look at the online site where the phone will be sold and has details on pricing and plans.
Gizmodo is saying that only one plan (Even More 500) will be offered, but I have a hard time believing T-Mobile won’t let you spend the extra cash to upgrade. Customers will also be able to purchase the phone unlocked and hopefully use it with the no-contract Even More Plus plans.
Their notes include:
- Yeah, it’s $530 unsubsidized. Google’s not going to be selling the phone at cost, like so many people considered. They’re not going to save us from the “making money off of hardware” culture we’ve got right now, so this is basically just another Android handset, albeit a really good one
- If you want it subsidized, you’ll have to sign up for a 2 year mandatory contract and pay $180 for the phone
- There’s only one rate plan: $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total
- Existing customers cannot keep their plan if they want a subsidized phone; they have to change to the one plan, and this only applies to accounts with one single line
- If that doesn’t fly with you, you have to buy the $530 unlocked version—this actually might save you money over two years if you already have a cheap plan
- Family plans, Flexpay, SmartAccess and KidConnect subscribers must buy the phone unlocked and unsubsidized for $530
- You can only buy five Nexus One phones per Google account
- There is language in the agreement of shipping outside the US
- Google will sell it at google.com/phone, which explains what they were doing with that page a few weeks ago
- Google will still call it the Nexus One apparently, and not the Google Phone
- If you cancel your plan before 120 days, you have to pay the subsidy difference between what you paid and the unsubsidized price, so $350 in this case. Or you can return the phone to Google. You also authorize them to charge this directly to your credit card.

People, what did you expect? There is no way for Google to reach a return of customer investment of hundreds of dollars. Hardware actually is expensive!

An iphone will work on T-mo Edge only, just like this phone will work on AT&T Edge only. Stop making crap up and hating on the iphone just because its OS still kicks the crap out of buggy/beta/fractured Android OS.

What kind of nuts are you ? Hardware is expensive ? I could’ve believed that back in the day when we had to physically format hard drives before you could even install software on them, but not today. Please, the actual production cost of that level of hardware is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $100-125…MAX. Wait until someone takes it apart and does one of those costing reviews. If you can build an XBOX 360 ( which has considerably more complicated, and physcially MORE hardware, for enough to be able to sell it for $299 retail and still make a margin of profit ( which M$ does, it may not be much, but remember this isn’t an exercise for Google to make money off of, in the end ), then there’s no reason why this phone couldn’t have been brought in for a retail unlock cost point of say, $350 or so. This would be a game changer. This would be something people would actually stop and reconsider that iPhone over. This would say, I hear your people. Coming from Tmo, where the hardware is truly always a generation behind what’s out there. The G1 being the exception, but that was beta hardware so let’s not quibble.
I understand Google can’t poo-poo on it’s current golden child ( Droid ), or the dumbed down sibling ( Cliq ), but if Google TRULY wanted to change the logistics of the game, this pricing/service plan are absolutely the WRONG way to go.
And in the words of a recent WIN of a commercial ( even if it’s for a product I’d never buy for myself ), “The man said, Ta-da!”.

what are you talking about? on the leaked website image there is clearly an option to buy the phone unlocked and “insert your own SIM card” and thus keep your current plan.
reality strikes. am i reading this correctly a special data plan for this at $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total? Wow, carriers and are going to kill the momentum w/ the high prices.
I think that info about rate plans is wrong. $39 is the cheaptest even more rate plan. I would expect customers could upgrade to a plan with more minutes.
It is a concern that carriers are creating specialized data plans. I’m afraid they will use this approach to milk this ‘data’ cow in ways that only a few will be able to afford it. I am already paying a couple of data plans and it ain’t cheap (even tho T-Mobile is still cheaper that others, but not sure how long that will last).
What is the language regarding shipping outside the US? Can we carry it overseas? Will it even work on international bands?
I just got off the phone with T-Mobile and of course they don’t know anything about the Nexus One. The lady did say to me that they have the Xperia X10 and a Motorola phone coming out soon. She was super curious about the Nexus One though.
I mainly called to verify our plan that we had. We do have the Unlimited Loyalty Family plan that they pushed on us because we we are “loyal” TMo customers. According to those specs we would be eligible to get the phone for $180 which is complete bull sh*t.

It should do voice and edge data on AT&T. If you want HSPA 7.2 3G then you need to go T-Mobile.
Is there a realistic chance the phone might eventually be usable on another carrier like AT&T or Verizon? In other words, get an Even More Plus plan on T-Mobile for a few months and then switch to another carrier when it’s possible…
It has to be GSM. Verizon or sprint won’t work because those are CDMA
Since this phone is a dead ringer for the HTC Dragon/Passion that’s been rumored for a 2010 launch on Verizon there’s a good chance you’ll see a CDMA variant.
I can justify $500+ for a laptop every few years, but not a phone. I’ll have to go the subsidized route with T-Mo if I get this. It has everything I want except one thing: QWERTY. I’m not so keen about having to use ADB after getting used to the console with my G1.

I got a Droid for Christmas(was shocked because I said nothing about it, I just told my mom one day in November that it is a nice phone).
When I got it I was excited and jumping for joy but really wanted to wait before replace my Razr. The Nexus One is a good looking phone, but I dont like what T-mo did here.
I’ll wait to see what the Bravo looks like, and will decide if I am exchanging the phone. Hopefully Bravo is on Verizon and comes out before Jan. 25th, so I can at least decide if I want to make an exchange.
Guess I will be staying with iPhone for now. Come on give me an Android with ATT 3g.

I can’t see that they wouldn’t let someone who has a plan that costs more than the lowest one they have. I have the unlimited loyalty and I’d like to keep it, along with my unlimtied text and web. I can’t afford $530 but I an afford $180. I have absolutely no problem having a contract with T-mobile. If I can’t have my minutes (that I suppose I never use a lot but want due to a safety net) Then sadly I’ll wait for an android phone that, has 2.1 or higher to come out on T-mobile. I am eligible for an upgrade, I’ve been since Feb. and I paid full price for the G1 so I could get it and not wait.

Other then the 320 RAM which HTC can still fix if they are smart… Why wouldn’t you just wait for the HTC Bravo either unsub or sub…

Thats only a $50 difference and with that plan at least you aren’t locked into any sort of commitment at all! You can switch over to another carrier at any time!
That is the beauty of Even More Plus. I hope more carriers offer no-contract plans like T-Mobile.
I have no problem being in a contract. I’ve been with T-Mobile for 5 years, and have no problem being with them for another two.

The right calculation is

Thanks Taylor! That’s why Sprint and Verizon need to get with the program and start using GSM instead of CDMA. Unbelievable, I’m going to miss out on the world’s greatest phone…so far. All well, you won’t be able to use the phone to its greatest capabilities since its running on T-Mobile’s bandwidth. Like the IPhone…great phone, but horrible service and T-Mobile is even more horrendous.
I’ll be enjoying 7.2 Mbps in a month or two with 4 bars in my house. Have fun paying more for Verizon.

I agree with you, GSM is better, but they’re kind of past the point where that’s an option.
Ace, Ace, Ace or is it Acey. I don’t work for the city, but I’m also only 18, so I highly doubt I could get a job there. But, since I have been working since I was 15, and pay for my own car insurance, gas, cell phone bill and everything else I want to buy on top of saving for college, I have two jobs. Managing that in my senior year in high school, being the sports editor for the school newspaper and throwing shot put and discus in track and field is actually pretty tough.
So you’re right. I sit at home and play all day. Or maybe I just don’t use my phone much outside of my house. Could be one or the other. You pick.
Oh yeah, and I doubt Apple will bring the iPhone to Verizon. After all of that bashing they did to it during the Droid commercials, I’d be shocked.

For all you guys whining about the $530 price, you should have figured out by now that this phone is really geared toward T-mobile service! They’re the only carrier that provides a plan specifically for unlocked, unsubsidized phones. For example, you would save $130 over 2 years by buying the phone unsub’d and paying for an EM+ plan on T-mo, over a comparable plan on contract with T-mo. If you’re not on T-mo, you don’t want this phone anyway… Edge only would blow.
Seriously, did you all expect Google to just give this away for free? Considering that this will be the fastest, most powerful, beefiest phone out when it is released; I think the price is pretty damn good. And as far as T-Mobile goes, I’ve been with them for nearly 10 years, from Seattle to Boston, and have never had a problem with them. Their service is good, their prices are great, and their customer service has always been prompt and helpfull. I swear, even if Google was giving these away for free these boards would still be full of bitchy whiners.

Sounds to me like everyone is complaining because they bought into all the rumors they heard about this phone. Did you guys really think that google was going to give this phone away for free?? If you compare it to other phones, I don’t think google is making that much on this phone to begin with. And for $180 w/tmobile…thats a steal! The behold II and the cliq go for $200+ and they aren’t even comparable to the nexus one. There is really only one downside I see to this phone and its the rate plan that tmobile is offering w/it. I can see how this could be a problem to some people. Good thing for me its not. I have a G1 and my plan is pretty much the same as the one they are offering so it won’t effect me at all. Can’t wait for the Nexus One to come out!!

I think USD 530 for this phone is normal. Unfortunately it hasn’t a physical keyboard, otherwise I was in.
If Google managed to do something nice with the WiFi on steroïds it’s even an amzing deal. Imagine no data plan. Imagine no call plan, just prepaid in case of emergency…. image not getting (large) bills from your telco anymore…..
I was really excited about the rumor of 199.00 w/o a contract. No way can I afford 500.00. I am with TMO but bought a G1 8 months ago. They wont let me upgrade or get the special pricing until that new 2 year contract is up. Google has disappointed me for the first time. Crushed.
For those of you who are getting phones every few months don’t expect it to be cheap, companies are not going to be tossing their money at you just so you’re happy, on the other hand it does suck that you have to get a specific plan to get the sub price since I am on a family plan.
All I want to know is if I stump up $530 can I at least tether the darn thing???
I’m guessing a unlocked version will be pretty resellable when the next latest phone comes out – preferably with a keyboard (which I really want but I might make a sacrifice for this phone).
And what if I get the T-Mobile version??? I have no intention of ever leaving T-Mobile and their phones accept a T-Mo SIM in Europe with no un-locking, plus T-Mobile give out unlock codes anyway – if I can tether it as well then I may just not bother with the unlocked phone (although the contract lockin will be a pain – the chances of a decent keyboard sporting Android phone besting the Nexus in the next year is high).

well this means that I need to find extra funding. good bye iPhone 3G. :’( I do miss having 3G on Tmobile though. This will be a great switch, or so I hope. If the Nexus one is a flop, I can always just buy another iPhone 3G on craigslist.
cmhmjmh – You don’t have to wait till your 2 year contract is up to upgrade your phone. I always sign a 2 year contract and upgrade after 1 year. Tmobile just prorates the cost since I’m 1/2 way through my contract.

I paid just €290 for my HTC Magic here in Germany, which is the same as the MT3G. And that €290 is including 19% VAT.
So what you’re saying is our MT3G is 19% overpriced ? Yeah, that sounds like a bargain alright.
Get real people. The real retail costs is nowhere NEAR what they’re asking for. And frankly, if this is how Google is going to play it, I just as well might wait it out until Apple or M$ next move.
$530 is too rich for my blood, and the meesly monthly plan they’re offering is RIDICULOUS ( especially to someone who’s been with TMo for almost 11 years straight, and been on an unlimited plan+data for $70/mo for the last year and something ). I can’t see giving that up just for the sake of saying I have this phone. Sorry….move along folks, nothing to see here….the demographic for this phone is soooo small by comparison to all of TMo’s present market, that it’s nonsensical. I can just see whomever’s doing market analysis on this having to swallow their tongue because of how inane this plan is going to play out for them.

Cyanogen twited saying the nexus has been rooted by some one that owns the phone, it’s kinda funny how the phone isn’t released yet but its already been rooted and makes me want the phone ven more already.

I’m pretty unhappy. I clicked through from the Google Nexus site to TMobile this afternoon to seal the deal on a Nexus One for $179 with a 2-year contract., as per the Google site. Lo and behold, the manifest said $279.
I called Google and got “Well, someone hasn’t gotten around to changing the price on the site yet. It’s $279. Neener neener neener!”
Is Google raising the retail price daily until they find the price point that people WON’T pay, and then they’ll step it back down from there? I won’t play that. I’ve reached that price point. I was excited to order this thing but now I am fresh otu of gruntle. I’m going back to look at the other Androids.
