Android-powered Dell Mini 5 approved for AT&T 3G

Would you buy a phone with a 5 inch screen? Some say bigger is better, but what crosses the line for a mobile display?

Dell is set to push the limit with their new Android-powered Mini 5. Some call it a mobile internet device or a mini tablet, but it appears Dell will refer to it as a phone.

AT&T told us they would launch five Android phones in the first half of the year, including one from Dell. Engadget has spotted the Dell Mini 5 on FCC’s site with support for AT&T 3G.

Michael Dell said the Mini 5 would be launching in the United States in the next couple of months so look for an official announcement soon.

Rumored specs of the Mini 5 include:

  • 5-inch 800×480 touchscreen
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and front facing camera
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G support
  • 1530mAh battery
  • Android 1.6

How much would you be willing to drop on this big boy? 500? 600? 700?

Back to this: 5 inchs screen is too big for a cell phone. 4.4 inches it the highest I will go for a cell phone and is run 1.6 for 500+,smh At&t stay losing. I’ll be shocked if At&t be around in 5 years!

5 years? Put that kool-aid down. They are going to be fine. i would hope they improve of course but let’s face it they have the hottest phone ever made. Oh if you travel all over to third or second world then yeahhh at&t is your carrier. I like the device, I would hope for a higher resolution aka HD2. Plus XDa tweaks. I see a future for it. Multi touch and maps on a screen that big is going to be sweet.

Sir The IPhone is leaving At&t real soon! When that happends at&t will meet its astronomic demise. Why because Iphone is what keep at&t afloat, See I believe apple realize that Android is becoming a force. so to be at the top with the best/ be competitive they with need to go to another cell phone carrier like verizon that cant help them…..

1.6 is a disappointment, and nearly the same specs as archos 5 inch tablet, I would pay no more than 300 ir 150 with contract

The fact that companies are still coming out with Android devices…I call this ‘phone’ the generic term device cause of it’s odd size…that run 1.6 is depressing. Half the time they release it with 1.6 but advertise ‘2.0 update coming soon’! Well why not just stick 2.0/2.1 on it and be done with it instead of shipping it with 1.6.

1.6, unbelievable. I think there is a market for a larger device like this. However, it sucks big time that you have to wait for the device maker to change their entire UI everytime android comes out with an update. Good luck. You already bought the device, what happens when they decide they don’t care about changing their UI. Funny thing about this is, hardly any educated consumer will want a 1.6 by the time this hits the market.

I dig the larger device. The full screen on Android phones is really for browsing the web and watching videos. For that, bigger is better. I wish it had a higher pixel density, though. 800×480 is kind of disappointing, since that’s the same resolution as the 3.7″ Nexus One.

If you feel silly holding it up to your face, like an iPad, just use a headset for your calls.

With it running Android 1.6 I would even accept a free one. Put 2.0 or 2.1 on it and I’d gladly part with up to $600 of my hard earned money.

Oops, I meant to say I wouldn’t even accept a free 1 with Android 1.6 on it.

I was very interested on this device…

For us that are not cell phone chatty Cathy’s & don’t spend microwaving our brains most of the day… A 5″ screen would be perfect for comfortable web surfing & game playing… I wouldn’t mind paying $600 for it.. On TMobile’s Plus plan…

But on ATT + A1.6 = No thanks… I am on ATT right now… And other then rollover minutes which I know have over 1,200… I am just waiting for the right device to jump ship to TMobile or even Sprint if they exclusively lock the HTC SuperSonic… Although I would prefer that one on TMobile too….

There are rumors of a Dell device for TMobile coming late March too… From the past rumors I thought the ATT Dell device would be the Dell Mini 3 & that the TMobile Dell (“at the end of March, expect something from Dell. Now here is the real mind game, he said it doesn’t look as though it’s a Dell phone, but something else.”) would be the Dell Tablet Mini 5 since even Dell sees it as a Media Device and not a cell phone(phone device secondary)… Really hope those bands are for Canada… And hope we see a TMobile Bands version soon…

Wow you would pay 600 for this on t-mobile with 1.6 now and maybe a upgrade in the future?

On a TMobile Even More Plus Family Plan I would save about $25 a month = about $300 a year off the same TMobile Even More Plans… Which are already cheaper then Verizon & ATT & since I don’t do Unlimited on the min’s it’s cheaper then Sprint…

As for the fw stuck @ A1.6… I would hope the XDA guyz would find a way for root & custom rom it… Since we have not idea how long Dell would actually support it… Archos has been horribly slow about supporting their tablet… And a custom rom would be great to bring the dialer parts being less of secondary though.. But as good as it can be…

I know it would sucked being stuck @ A1.6 for a few months… But at least it already comes with Google Maps… With maybe an upgrade to multi-touch Goole Maps thru the market…

We should learn a lot more about this device in just over a week @ the MWC… Hope they surprises us with A2.1 on it…

I would just hate it on ATT… Right now I get into an elevator @ work & I loose my ATT signal to even make phone calls… If I go over to a another building with a cafeteria I completely loose signal… TMobile phones do not have any problems in elevators & the other buildings where I spend most of my day… So I am looking to leave ATT as soon as I settle for a Android device… Preferably 4.3″ or bigger & HTC or Dell…

Not one single dime. Its already outdated since its running Android 1.6. Also, how much ROM storage area does it have? 512MB for OS and apps?? Puhlease!!!

    Why do they do this?

dude, I agree. why the hell do they tease us like this? I expected this to kill all other phones out there, phone storage wise. I was seriously considering this one, but two huge hurdles for me
      1. AT&T. That just plain blows…
      2. weak res, weak storage, and outdated Android.

I’ll stick with my rooted G1 for now

I’m not sure why they only put a little amount of ROM on the phones still. The good news to all this is, ROM won’t really matter soon since Google plans to implement full apps2sd support meaning apps will be installed and what not onto the SD card in future versions of android and not onto the actual phone.

iphone is going to t-mob. its the other GSM carrier. I haven’t heard of any iphone+cdma leaks, i doubt apple would make one anyway.

AT&T is heaving with just the iphone usage, add 5 android phones to the same anemic network…AT&T has some huge issues ahead of them.
