Sprint 4G handset by summer (Supersonic?)

We have known since last year that Sprint’s first 4G handset would be powered by Android and launch in 2010. We weren’t expecting the handset till the end of the year, but a new report from Forbes indicates that Sprint has moved up the launch date. Sprint tells Forbes its first 4G handset will launch in the first half of 2010 by summer.

No specific handset has been announced, but many people are speculating it could be the HTC phone codenamed Supersonic (A9292). This phone (pictured above) is supposed to feature a 4.3 inch AMOLED display, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 1 GB ROM, and be the first Android device to support WiMax.

Sprint’s 4G WiMax service is currently available in 27 U.S. markets (including my hometown) covering more than 30 million people. By the end of 2010, the network is expected to include Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington and it will cover up to 120 million people.

The WiMax network has a theoretical max of 10 Mbps, but real world test place download speeds in the 3-6 Mbps range.

We should have some good competition this year because T-Mobile is planning their own upgrade to HSPA+ which supports 21 Mbps (9 Mbps in tests) and it will span their entire network (230 million people).

Look for some 4G handset announcements during next month’s CTIA show in Las Vegas.

this is kind of an aside, but why do all of the phones HTC makes move all of the buttons around? really? can’t they agree to have back-menu-home-search.

i’m only really talking about HTC phones too. i fully understand if other handset makers change it up, or maybe a phone isn’t doing the 4 button thing.

i had to relearn after moving to the nexus one after a G1. but there is no reason why the N1 and the supersonic can be the same set up.

FWIW, I like the Supersonic’s layout better. Probably because it’s closer to G1′s, making it feel more familiar to me. I just find it odd having the Back button on the left.

One reason this happens is the carriers… Specially here in the US… They all try to be unique… Which usually means they end up fn’g things up…

Have you seen the back pics of the HTC Verzion Incredible

Compare to the HTC Desire… That looks like a Pre-K finger painter made it…

Sprints HTC Hero was not horrible.. But it had nothing on the original Hero… I guess in Europe since their networks are more open to competition… They worry less about the phones looking differently than the manufacturer created & more of who’s sim card is in the darn thing…

Hope a HSPA+ version of those phone comes out on TMobile before the end of the year… They can call it the HD2A… And hopefully HTC will have started to used the SuperAMOLED screens… Those things are wicked good..

Since TMobile will be getting the HTC Bravo in April or May… It probably won’t be till Nov….

Guess the TMobile Dell Mini 5 can keep me company till then..
