We just posted about the leaked Android 2.1 firmware for the Droid Eris and then learned a nearly finished firmware is also floating around for the Motorola Droid.
As many Droid owners know, Motorola promised the Android 2.1 update was coming “this week” which later turned into coming soon. No further updates have been provided since then, but someone leaked a near final firmware (which is expected to be used for the upcoming OTA update).
Kellex from Droid Life was brave enough to flash the leaked ROM on his Droid and found the performance to be improved. Check out his video below for a quick hands on. Notable missing features from Android 2.1 include live wallpapers and the 3D launcher (both found on the Nexus One).
Motorola has been struggling with recent software updates so it is anyone’s guess when this one might appear. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened tomorrow of it got delayed again (and again) till next month.

“Notable missing features from Android 2.1 include live wallpapers”
Are you sure you can’t download and use live wallpapers from market? The live wallpaper API is in the SDK, how could they remove it?
Live wallpapers aren’t available for download and how they removed them is simple, they took out the files. 2.1 for current Android phones will be gimped and everyone should go ahead and just accept it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; unless Google starts mandating minimum hardware standards for Android phones the landscape will continue to fragment into many phones running many different versions of Android and each will be different with regards to what features it has and what apps it will run.
Actually you can get some live wallpapers on the market. livewall papers have nothing to do with hardware on the droid
@CJ
What does hardware have to do with live wallpapers?
@Zer0-9
What apps have live wallpapers on the market?
@robojerk
Most if not all Android 1.5/1.6 phones have hardware under the required spec for what the Live Wallpapers need to reliably run along with other things. This is also the reason they are not going to be getting Flash 10.1. I would also presume that the 2.1 versions these phones will be getting, will be even more crippled than what most 1.5/1.6 owners expect to be getting.
Root, install Bugless Beast 1.2. You’ll never want 2.1 again.
As long as it gets faster then I’m good. Kinda wish it had the 3Dish app starter rather than the standard sliding tray thing, but ohh well.
what about verizon update?
I’m with gilbert just root and overclock and you won’t be worried about ota updates
What is that widget app on his home screen with the time and temp? It looks good.
Looks like an ugly version of HTC’s clock/weather widget. Like, hideous.
It’s called Beautiful Widgets and is available for $1.99 I believe.
Just so it is known, the droid update was and still hasn’t been released because of the homescreens and other user set items being wiped when updating. Verizon says until they can update without wiping they will not release the update. I was told by a verizon repin my store
It a possibility that the Android 2.1 update for Motorola Droid could probably be release on Q2 or else I could be wrong here though.
I wonder when we’ll get it in Canada. Considering that most of the country still doesn’t 1.6, I’m guessing not till next year.
Hey erbody! I have had my Droid for a little over a week now. I had a pre before and was very good @ patches. But with the Droid I’m slow about this rooting and such. Does anyone mind bringing me up to speed. As far as the topic, I’m just very excited about it all I’d be very disappointed if live wallpapers wasn’t included in the next update tho.
I have a rooted moto droid running a rom very similar to 2.1 in ways and I’m overclocked at 1000 mghz but I learned to root my droid and install custom rom from videos on youtube by a guy who goes by droid review search him his videos are awesome also alldroid.org is a great site to check out good luck
